Yurcich previous to Penn State:
Texas: 7th in total offense
Ohio State: 3rd in total offense
Oklahoma State: 13th, 4th, 14th, 17th in total offense.
All we improvements over the previous OC. I don't see how you look at that and then conclude that Franklin didn't play a part in this offensive production.
In my opinion, Franklin hired Moorhead and he brough a completely new scheme. Therefore, Franklin didn't meddle and let him do his thing. When Rahne took over, we saw some devolution of that. Every year since has seemingly been more run committed and less RPO/QB running. It's like he just morphed us back to the 2014-2015 style offense he's comfortable with.
Seriously, when you look at the plays and things we ran under Donovan... bubble screens, commitment to the run, and little to no downfield passing... can you tell me that this doesn't look exactly like the 2014-15 offense, just with more talented players?
My favorite plays were when the offensive formation caused Michigan to overload in an area and then Penn State ran our threw the ball to where Michigan was strongest ----- it was a total psych-job. But the biggest psych-outs were when #15 threw the ball to where the receivers weren't. Michigan had to be thinking WTF!
@roaminglion 100%. Sorry for those who can’t see this by now.
Southern no hard feelings and I know you bleed blue and white like most on here. However, it’s garbage you pinning our offensive issues mostly on a 19yr old kid. They recruited a square peg and continue to shove him in a circle hole. How you justify defending grown men making millions underachieving and attack a kid who is not being put in a good position is just wrong. Just my opinion
Maybe one of the following happened:
1. Orders from higher up
2. Pressure from the blue chip offensive players (seeing their draft status and NIL drop)
3. Word leaking of parents of players urging them to transfer if nothing changes
4. None of the above
More like gotta throw somebody under the bus before I end up there. Just my sneaking suspicion.
I’m afraid we may see some offensive creativity from now till the end of the season but next year the offense will look eerily similar to 2023.
It will be interesting to see who might be interested in the job.
@psufan1997 I’m not blaming Allar for the loss I’m just pointing out he’s not playing good and the Michigan QB made plays in critical times to get the win. The Michigan QB moved the chains on 3rd downs and ours didn’t, that’s just the truth. James Franklin blames Mike Yurcich so we’ll see what happens. Hopefully we get a QB competition going and win these next 3 games this team still has a lot to play for. 11 wins is the goal.
@been-there-ii Ain’t no way James Franklin is in trouble that’s just fan talk. We’ve lost to 2 teams in 2 year’s to 2 top 5 teams winning the Rose Bowl headed to possibly the peach bowl this year if we win out. Ain’t happening. Just need to find an OC that can get us better at QB. James Franklin fired Yurcich because he thinks a change needs to be made.
@southern-psu-fan lol eventually he will be fired. Or are you saying we should accept PSU is a second-third tier team that has no hope of winning championships?
I told you in 2017 that we will never win a B1G championship again with JF as head coach and I’ll tell you again 2016 WAS A FLUKE. JF is a shit coach that doesn’t know when to call a timeout or go for two and hasn’t made an in game adjustment that’s worked in ten years.
It will eventually come out that JF was given an ultimatum and that is why Yurcich was fired and when the NIL money stops coming in firing JF is going to be a lot more than just “fan talk”
What must Allen and Singleton think when they watch other games and realize that backs are actually allowed to run outside the tackles on first and second downs and that not everyone faces 6 to 8 in the box?
What must Allar think when he sees QBs that were mediocre (Nix and Penix) until they transferred to the PAC12 and became Heisman candidates because they work with imaginative offensive schemes and against weak defenses?
If the new OC is same old-same old then the results will be the same. Even with a great hire it may take a few years and these 3 will be gone.
@brownale Hopefully the new OC convinces them otherwise but I’d be surprised if Allen or Singleton didn’t transfer.
@psujoe Homer, second tier teams don’t go to the Rose Bowl and win it. I do believe we can win a NC when we get the right QB. I told y’all last year it would be tough winning a NC with a pocket QB and look at us today. Just gotta get the right pieces together and get everybody on the same page and we’ll get one. I’m never satisfied with losing to Ohio St and Michigan.
@southern-psu-fan 2nd tier teams only go to the Rose Bowl when the teams that kicked their ass are in the playoff.
In the past 12 years, Oregon has won it 3 times, Stanford twice, and TCU once. All of those teams you consider 2nd tier and have said are soft... so I call BS on your statement. You talk out of both sides of your mouth sometimes.@psujoe Homer, second tier teams don’t go to the Rose Bowl and win it.
@roaminglion i don’t remember saying 2nd tier teams unless I was copying what somebody else said because 2nd tier teams I thought were teams like Ga Southern but I have called all them teams you just said light weights. I use the word heavy weights and light weights. I can’t remember but I would think I was copying what somebody else was saying. If I did, my bad. It just doesn’t sound like what I usually say.
@psu61 what James Franklin did at Vanderbilt is as good as it’s going to get imo and 11-2 winning Rose Bowls, Fiesta Bowls and Cotton Bowls is very high standards in college football today. Ohio St has better players and as long as Penn St is in the big 10 Ohio St will have better players and that usually means they’ll win most of the time. James Franklin recruiting is probably as good as it’s going to get and that’s just the truth. I don’t see anybody out recruiting James Franklin but you never know. ImO James Franklin is the head coach and he won’t be bullied by anybody to tell him who his coaches are going to be. If he thinks a change needs to be made he’ll make it and that’s the only time he’ll make it. Nobody will pressure him into doing anything while he’s winning 11 games and winning Rose Bowls and other big dawg bowls. It ain’t happening brother
As a fan I get frustrated when we lose and sometimes I want to choke James Franklin. I don’t agree with everything he does like Saturday and in the Ohio St game i would’ve benched Allar and played Pribula. When you fire a guy winning the way James Franklin is it probably won’t end good. We lost to 2 teams the last 2 years and both teams are top 5 and imo the reason we lost them games is because we’re not good enough at QB. Can’t fire the coach every time he loses a big game.
An organizational admin doesnt have to fire a coach necessarily, it starts with withholding funding for ancillary needs or wants, and at some point deciding on how miserable life can be made. It just depends on who the players are that are playing chicken. There is a new AD in the house, who knows what the dynamics are and how it will play out over the next 3 months to 3 years. Will be an interesting theatrical act that has already played out comedy, melodrama, and drama. Let’s just hope a full blown tragedy is avoided. You know like hiring a perennial 7-5 coach, lol. So, Southern, 10-2, may very well keep the money flowing and the vultures at bay.
@psu61 I trust you and i know you know more than me because I have no clue how that stuff works. I just can’t picture somebody at Penn St telling James Franklin that they want him to make changes to his coaching staff especially winning 11 games and Rose Bowl. James Franklin does care what the fans think and he probably reads the sports page but he’ll only make changes if he thinks a change needs to be made. The football team is in excellent shape we just gotta get a little better at QB. Lol
When James goes courting new OC's it's gonna be interesting. He might find it hard to get any takers. Yurcich is well respected and I would think anybody Jimmy approaches might check with Mike to get his side of the story. That would seem to be a prudent thing for a candidate to do. If my suspicions about Jimmy interfering with the OC doing his job are correct and MY spills his guts, any top OC might be reluctant to take the job. Just a random thought from an old fart, lol.
@rip My guess is that Yurcich will get an incentive to sign a non-disclosure if Franklin was significantly involved with the offensive difficulties.
