Each college has a mission statement regarding its educational goals. It’s the college’s job to fulfill the statement. At the foundation of every college degree is the liberal arts experience. Extra curricular activities contribute to the total educational experience including both intramural and competitive athletics. Too many D1 athletes have no interest in “gaining from the total educational experience” and only want to enhance their athletic performance hoping to sign a lucrative professional contact. This is the way it is. Unfortunately most revenue producing collegiate athletic programs have swayed far from the original educational goals of competitive sports.

Speaking for myself, I am losing a lot of interest in major college sports. I don’t think I’m alone.

If you didnt mind the excess and rampant cheating throughout the 80s and 90s, why would anything bother you now? My lord, kids were "graduating" without being able to read, were being paid under the table everywhere, and taking steriods and other PEDs like candy.

If that was okay, why is today so bad? College athletes are much more educated coming out of school then they ever have been. Many kids are graduating early, and even completing high school in 3 1/2 years. I'd rather have it how it is today than return to a time where no one (except Paterno and a few others) gave a chit about education or kid's health at all.

Actually I did mind the historic nonsense that always existed in college football.  That’s why I was thrilled when PSU defeated Miami for the NC. Definite gains were made improving the degree of educational accountability but lately I think the sport has regressed. Maybe the difference now it is more obvious because of social media and the plethora of info available via the net. Paterno stood for excellence and I’m not certain the standards he established at PENN STATE exist there now.  I’m also not sure those that play now are achieving the academic accomplishments you mentioned.

But we are living in changing times. Maybe the cloak of mystery is finally being peeled off of revenue sports. Maybe me and others were happy not knowing what was actually happening years ago and were happy tailgating and cheering for our teams.

NIL, opt outs, players continue leaving without degrees, does not sit well with an old school fella like me.

Certainly entitled to your opinion and it's appreciated... My question is this: You say "players continue leaving without degrees" which is happening yes...

However, mainly those that leave without a degree are the ones who are going to make a ton of money in the NFL. Those are stars that leave, not people who are late draft picks. Even still, leaving early does not mean they did not graduate. Some graduate in 3 years, others leave before their senior season after redshirting. That happens a lot.

So there's really a small fraction of kids leaving early without a degree, and there are tremendous options available to them if they choose to go to the NFL. Online learning makes finishing their degree possible, or they could simply come back at a later date.

My question is this... why are so many hung up on getting a diploma before they leave? I can understand it in Basketball where the 1 and done thing is comical, but in football most do get a diploma and they ones that don't usually are pretty close to the degree anyway. Easy to finish up even if they go to the NFL.
