The colleges are beautiful, a lot of kids are gettin a free education and the kids are so much smarter today than they were 30 years ago Especially in the south so I don’t see what the problem is unless maybe the kids are just spoiled rotten. Man, these kids are so smart today and just look around we as a country are doing pretty dang good we live the greatest life in the world so IMO we all should count our blessings. There are some folks that do have problems and we should help them anyway we can as long as they are willing to help themselves. Life is great baby!

To Bob and Nit2016:....

Bob, you are right and I think we both agree that we don't like what its become but the fact is true, this is the way it is. And I will emphatically tell you that personally I am for anything Penn State can do to make football and all other athletic programs even more successful because I AM one of those consumers.

Nitnation2016....your counterpoints are very good. The way I'm reading Sky's post it is that I don't think he is demeaning all the good things that, lets say Iowa, are doing to honor and heal kids with cancer. That said, I will bet you that the director of cancer operations  ( or whatever the title is ) at that same U of Iowa hospital does not make as much money as Kirk Ferenz.

@lakerie

I don't care what the head of Pediatric oncology makes or what Iowa head football coach makes.  I don't sit around comparing salaries, it's stupid.

The Dr. is curing or treating cancer, the football team is putting 100k in front of a cause that many donate to.

@nitnation2016

well, ok then.

Absolutely none of what Kirk Ferentz gets paid at Iowa comes from public funds. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Yeah, he's the highest paid public employee in the state of Iowa... but that's a very liberal use of the word "public". No taxes are paying his salary. The academic portion of the school is not paying his salary. Who is paying his salary then? Boosters and sports, period. All his money is coming from Iowa Football and the Big Ten. That's it.

People want to act as if these college coaches at public universities are getting paid with tax dollars or public funds that would have been used somewhere else. They aren't. Calling them public employees is a technicality, because they are really just working for the Athletic Department at Iowa. And Iowa football brings in money. The Big Ten Network and other sources bring in money... to the tune of $100 million last year at Iowa. Kirk Ferentz is being paid from that money, the money the football team is directly responsible for bringing in and isn't taking one dime from anything or anyone else.

Yet people continue to act as if a coaches salary somehow steals from the students or the public. Maybe at other schools, who knows... we are talking about Iowa here and it's not true. Not one cent came out of public funds, unless you consider football and the Big Ten generating money "public" funds.

At the end of the day some guy in an Iron Man suit made $100 million dollars acting as a super hero. Hugh Laurie made millions playing a fake doctor on TV while actual doctors make much less and save lives. You could argue deserving salaries all day long, someone will always have a gripe about while this person should make more and this other person should make less.

So all of that is correct of course but I wanted to point out there is irony in a coach or an actor's salary being substantially more than a highly educated scientist looking for a cure for cancer. Its free market economics so it is what it is and I'm a part of it.

WOW a football coach giving back... It's only $10,000.00, I'm sure some will criticize him for not giving a million.

That's certainly true, but I think what gets missed in all that is usually it's comparing someone at the very top of their field to someone who's average in theirs.

For example: Kirk Ferentz is among the very best at what he does. So is Robert Downey Jr. They are pretty much the pinnacle of what they do. I'm absolutely certain that their are Oncologists making millions a year too, just not some random guy at Iowa. In particular, Dr. Soon-Shiong is a surgeon now worth 12.3 billion due to his wolk in cancer discoveries and treatments... so he's kinda far outpacing Ferentz LOL

Hospital CEO's typically make more than the doctors too.

I'm conflicted... do I say nothing to give you the last word or do I reply and say thank you for the well wishes and say Merry Christmas to you too!

I went with the latter, LMAO.

WE ARE!
