Looks like he earned it as well!  What has happened to journalism?

Why would he earn the news from Saquon Barkley? It said he learned the GPOY news from Saquon, not that he learned the award.

I hope I'm wrong but I've seen this kid play in person multiple times and he is good but I just don't understand the hype. He seems a lot closer to being an  Austin Scott than being the second coming of Saquon.

@shankalottapuss  doesn’t exist anymore Bob. I’ve told y’all before but I was reading an article about the all time best coaches and they had Tom Osborne ranked higher than Barry Switzer and he was 5-12 against Switzer lol well, maybe that’s not journalism but espn news is just as bad.

It's not hard to understand why someone put Osbourne ahead of Switzer... because Switzer was plagued by scandal that he eventually admitted to. His players tried to score cocaine from federal agents, he admitted covering up crimes, and the school was put on probation when he was forced to resign before being fired.

Say what you will about Osbourne, he certainly never approached that level of damage. Another thing people forget is Switzer was at the height of his career when Osbourne was hired. So comparing head to head record is a bit ridiculous, since one was just starting out when the other was 10+ years and 2 NC's ahead of him already.

Switzer > Osbourne .

Not even close.

If I remember correctly, and I usually don't, but wasn't that the reason JVP refused to retire?  Because he couldn’t retire and leave college football in the hands of the “Jackie Sherrills and Barry Switzers.”

You are right, they did start around the same time. I think he's a better coach but the reason Osbourne is ahead of him on lists is absolutely the cheating and legal issues.

As for Osbourne's players, yeah their were issues too. But no probation and certainly no admission he covered up crimes like Switzer did.

@roaminglion  Roam, you’re 10 or 15 years younger than most of us so you might not remember Oklahoma back in the 70’s and 80’s but I’m telling ya when Oklahoma and Switzer showed up they were tough to beat they played offense and defense and to get a win against’em you pretty much had to play a perfect game they were that good. They did have a lot of crap that went on I’m just looking at the football part. You know how good Nebraska was and Osborne was 5-12 against Switzer that’s just how dominating Oklahoma was because Nebraska was good too.

Agree, being from the area I also saw him play in person. The Berks league does not have the skill players or speed he will be facing. Watch his extended highlight video and you will see where he gets most of his yardage.

You're right, BT II.  Joe also referred to him once as "Barry Swizzle stick", lol.

If you look at the headline within the active link - it looks likes a typo ... saying he learned the award, rather than he earned the award.  Rereading the actual headline, I can see it either way, but typos are common place anymore in articles that I read, sports or any other topic.

Side note:  If Singleton is the #1 RB in the country, why do all the sites list him as a 4* ? Even a signing day article I read this morning listed him as 4* but I swear I've heard people on the radio say he and Allard were 5*'s

247Sports has him listed as 5 star and #1 RB. Just like anything else pertaining to sports, every service has their own opinion on who's the best.  https://nitsoftheroundtable.com/community/penn-state-football/singleton/#post-33477

Osborne was as dirty as Switzer...He had the lawrence Phillips situation that he swept under the rug after he almost beat that female volleyball player to death...He also had a situation with Scott Baldwin and the worst of them Christian Peter...Obsorne evidently thought it was ok for his players to rape and knock the crap out of women...smh...

I didnt say he wasnt dirty. I said his program was never put on probation and he's never admitted to covering up crimes. Both things Switzer has done.

Is what it is

Switzer didn’t suck up to the media like Osborne did he would tell ‘em kiss his behind like joe would and y’all seen how these scumbags did Joe. Switzer wasn’t a role model for a  coach like joe was but what you see with Switzer is what you got, he wasn’t fake. He even said, he wasn’t a babysitter he was a football coach 😂 at least he told you how he felt and didn’t lie about it. If the media had gone after Osborne like they did Switzer he would probably  be worse. Man, Barry Switzer is 84 years old. I don’t know about y’all but I use to love the Oklahoma and Nebraska game back in the day what an awesome game to watch? Check Switzer records against the big dawg coaches, he didn’t take a backseat to anybody. Only 3 coaches to win a NC and Super Bowl and Switzer was one of ‘em

I'm thinking that at the same point in his career we had no idea what Saquan was.  He turned out to be the total package IMO.  And I'm talking about character in addition to ability.

Do I remember Osborne having a starting back throw a  girlfriend down the stairs and hardly get a slap on the wrist?  Things are fuzzy.

I'm not sure you are getting my point. As time passes "allegations" tend to fade but admissions and punishments do not. Those making lists who weren't there or don't remember what happened just see one coach with probations and admissions of guilt, and one with out those things.

That is what I am saying, it is what it is. Probably why you see Osbourne higher on a list thqn Switzer. Hey, you could argue that Devaney was better than Osbourne, because Nebraska was trash before he showed up.

@roaminglion  i understand what you’re saying I only put that link up to show people how good Switzer was but he’s definitely not a role model and that probably does hurt him on being one of the best coaches. After reading all that stuff on that link Switzer is even better than I thought lol. We all know JJ built the cowboys but he did win a super bowl there. I actually thought he won it his first year there but it was his second year. Still can’t believe he’s 84 man time flies

I thought Paterno and Switzer were actually pretty good friends and actually vacationed together as a family; could have sworn I heard/read that years ago.

I am guessing that's not the case. I believe Joe Paterno once said he'd never retire because he didn't want to leave college football to the "Barry Switzer's and Jackie Sherril's of the world."
