You are right about that Roam and I ain't in the room as they say...Terry said after the bowl game that Grunk is the present and future QB at Penn State...Then this kid from Iowa State enters the picture and Grunk hits the portal...The way I see it and yes I ain't in the room but logic tells me this guy brought in his boy from Iowa State and that is why Grunk left...He will transfer and start somewhere next year...Maybe Indiana or the other B1G school that escapes me...To me this was a stupid move...I could be wrong...I hope I am wrong...But this Iowa State east crap ain't exciting me...
Actually Grunk hit the portal before it opened, so Rocco had not committed. Who knows.
5 Iowa State player aint Iowa State east. Especially when they are their 5 best players.
If it is only those 5 guys then it is a true upgrade at every position except QB as far as I am concerned...Character of the player matters too...There is a lot that goes into the building of a team and it always isn't just pure talent...I just think letting Grunk walk was a huge mistake...The QB from Iowa State just don't move the needle for me...He is as vanilla as it gets...Purely a game manager as far as I am concerned...
Aside from losing Grunk, I have several concerns with our new HC. He appears to be hell bent on bringing his favorite Iowa St players over to the Lions. That's fine if they are upgrades, but I don't see that being the case. I believe it shows his loyalty to his former players as well as a disregard of the efforts of our guys who, under Terry Smith, rallied to save what could have been a totally disastrous season. Speaking of TS, I question how much input & responsibility he will have working for MC. or will he be regularly over ruled by all the former Iowa St coaches If he had any real input, I believe Grunk would till be here. I'm sorry for ranting, but I just don't like what I've seen out of this guy so far.

@the-funeral-director I totally agree with you FD - Grunk has shown us more spunk and tremendous in 7 games than Blech in 3 years - misspell on purpose.
I liked Grunk as much as anybody but looking at Becht numbers he might be better for one year than Grunk because he knows the offense and Grunk will have to learn the offense. I’m sure Grunk had the opportunity to stay and compete but he chose to leave and hopefully find a place where he can play. We gotta give the man a chance I know this dude MC wants to win. I love what I’m seeing in the portal we’re getting some good football players. Give it a chance my friends.
Seriously Southern...Grunk had the opportunity to stay and compete? They are gonna pay this kid 3 million a year and he is the Head Coaches boy...The financials don't add up either...What do you think Grunk is gonna get paid to stay as a backup compared to hitting the portal to be a starter somewhere? This was a stupid move on many levels especially when you are managing a salary cap...That million or more they coulda saved keeping Grunk and passing on this kid from Iowa State could have been used to bring in some better talent to plug some holes...
To be devils advocate
Grunks wins were against bottom 1/4 big 10 teams and an unknown Clemson. He did look good though. But we had one of the best backfields in the country. I'd propose his best game as a reference point was IU. And he had a good game.
Rocco has a bigger body of work and must have more games against better teams.
Clearly Rocco has a head start on 'The Offense' but that is short term thinking.
My best reason to take Rocco over Grunk is that Grunk does not fit your offense so it doesn't matter that he has three years of eligibility. Starting Grunk ultimately makes him the man and you don't get a QB that fits until year 4.
So while it may look like short term thinking to bring Rocco in it may actually be long term thinking.
@the-funeral-director So you’re saying we would have saved millions by keeping Grunk? I’m gonna call BS on that one. He would have wanted paid to stay and be a starter and it would have cost even more to keep him next year. And you’re completely ignoring the fact that he’s never shown any signs of wanting to stay.
I didn't say save MILLIONS...I said potentially saving a million...I am curious what the number is they are paying this kid from Iowa State? I am sure if they didn't pursue this kid he would have stayed...Why would he stay? I wouldn't...They are bringing in the new head coaches boy from his former school out of the portal and paying the kid big bucks...You think they are going to sit him? The kid is the returning starter...I don't think it's a stretch that they are going to pay this kid from Iowa State a hell of a lot more than Grunk would have cost them...Again...I ain't in the room...I have no idea what the conversations were...But with what I am seeing I am sure Grunk was told what was going down and said see ya...He don't want to sit behind this kid for a year and watch...He wants to play and develop and just like Coleman going to Ohio State this kid is gonna go somewhere and be very successful...I am just hoping he leaves the B1G cause I don't want him beating our brains in the next 2 or 3 years like Coleman is...Time will tell if I am right or not...Hell I am praying to the Lord almighty I am wrong here...Money talks...I woulda offered Coleman top pay to keep him...In this new era it's all about the money...Lets see what Penn State is paying this kid from Iowa State and see what Grunk signs for...I am curious to see the difference in pay...
@the-funeral-director Grunk never came out and said he wanted to stay., Immediately after the bowl game he was asked about it and he stated he was going to explore his options.
Coleman is most likely headed to LSU or Ole Miss .
Chaz Coleman was leaving regardless the dude is a freshman and already sitting out of games and thank you DDS. It’s the MC Penn St train now baby and if the players or coaches don’t want to be on it…bye
#17 and #85 had the opportunity to stay and both either wanted more money or didn’t want to compete for the starting positions. I’ll give ya they may wanted to just leave and not play for MC or maybe just wanted a new start but I ain’t buying they were told you ain’t got a chance to play we got our guys and you don’t have a chance to compete because that’s James Franklin shit and that’s what got him fired. I’m trusting MC because I like what I’m seeing and hearing from this dude. Becht wasn’t backing down from competition and fighting it out on the field. Just saying. If these guys just want a new start I can respect that as well. Good luck and I’ll be pulling for you.
I pulled like heck for Wallace lll, Pribula and CVwhen they left just like I pulled for James Vandenberg when he left as long as they ain’t playing Penn St. I hope they all end up at GT
Portal additions happen every year, so how is this disregarding the players?Aside from losing Grunk, I have several concerns with our new HC. He appears to be hell bent on bringing his favorite Iowa St players over to the Lions. That's fine if they are upgrades, but I don't see that being the case. Also, I'm sorry to be blunt but I am not going to praise players for continuing to actually play. What was the alternative... lay down on the field? So we aren't supposed to try and bring in good players because the current ones didn't give up and did their jobs while receiving NIL money and scholarships? Low freaking bar.
Wholesale additions (from coaches former team), mass exoduses, Grunk gone after TS said he was our QB of the future??? Just doesn't smell right to an old fogey!
Grunk said 'exploring his options'. To the team that means I'm doing what's best for me...I too am leveraging. He could have kept his mouth shut or said what coaches say "I'm a Penn Stater, unless someone offers me more".
What he said as defacto leader is "Team? What team? This season is over, we are all free agents"
C'est la vie, bonne chance.
@underlion and that’s exactly why I always side with Penn St. I love and get attached to players just like everyone else but the Penn St helmets, jerseys, White pants and black Nikes always comes first!
No way, BT. I'm so happy that Jimmy is gone. I believe I was one of the most persistent critics calling for his arse! Your right about the exits when HC changes occur, but I don't know of any that I'm aware of where incoming personnel (players & coaches) appear to be predominantly from the new HC's former team.
@rip It's a whole new world out there Bob, not sure we can say what's "normal" anymore. Particularly since we didn't have a HC when it was (early) signing time. The way I see it, the % is leaning in IS direction due to their availability. See what the % is after portal season. How many PSU players and Franklin recruits moved/signed w/ VT? ...along w/ staff. lol I'm too lazy to look it up. Not sure that the PSU number is too far of the mean.
Good points, BT. I just have some concerns with how our new HC is approaching this. Hope I'm wrong (wouldn't be the 1st time) We'll see what happens once the games begin.
@rip As John Lennon sang, Give MC a chance!
@been-there-ii I love what I’m seeing in the transfer portal. If we keep this momentum going we’ll be in the playoffs this year. 10 or more wins this year brother just wait and see 😁
