Just musing on a Saturday morning.

After reading the thread on PW, a few articles and looking at the current landscape; it seems to me NCAA FB is there and going deeper into the model of the one and done model of NCAA BB (with the exception of FB being 3 years); the BB model really set the stage. Now in football, top level players are not gonna sit around and pay their dues so to speak, and prolly coming in with he mind set of 3 and done and/or at a minimum of one and done provided the amount of the NIL and agreement commitment. I say this because the fact is not everyone is good enough for the NFL, players know this, so now you can make the money with NIL and potentially more than a 5, 10, etc year blue-collar career for some.

Fast forward from now out to 5 years; does NCAA FB start transitioning to the MLB model for high school players to create stability for programs and for players? I don't know enough about that model but figured someone on the board would be able to chime in? I would think the transfer portal model as we know it today will have to change.

I believe the NFL will keep tough on letting guys try and get in the NFL because kids will get killed. The NFL is a brutal sport and 19 and 20 year old kids just ain’t ready. Maurice Clarett tried to challenge the NFL and get in and we all seen how that turned out and it was t good for Maurice Clarett.

You're right, Southern.  Another reason is the NFL is happy with their farm system that develops future players.  They won't want kids coming out too early before the "college" coaches refine player skills so NFL coaches don't need to be bothered teaching fundamentals.  Coaching at the NFL level focuses on developing strategy and game plans, not on teaching the basics of playing the individual positions.

Okay so lets park the NFL putting the road barriers up to early entry, in the end the NFL will do what benefits the NFL.

Therefore, how does the NCAA and FB programs evolve under the transfer portal and NIL model going forward e.g. what shape do you see the model taking over the next 5 years; stays the same, changing rules on sitting out if going into the portal, the program acting as the agent for the NIL contract, power and corruption issues that will emerge, etc?

I don't see anything changing from the free for all we see today.  The barn door is open on transfers and NIL and the NCAA is to spineless to do anything to rein it in.

From what I’m hearing in my podcasts that I listen to we are getting destroyed in NIL money by schools like Miami and Meatchicken State and some players from the portal that had planned on visiting us have cancelled because of it.

That's the way it is in the pay for play game of "college" football we live with today.

Refreshing to watch Army-Navy.  They will have an education and a way of supporting themselves.  This current NCAA deal, in general will prove to be bad for most, but at that age you only think and dream short term.  A signing bonus in the pros is probably worth it if you can get a good deal for being a early rounder.  And in theory you can get an education anytime.  But most will get what they get in college.

It just seems that while the argument was 'for the athlete' it will prove to be beneficial for few.  But that is on them, more now than before.

I thought we would do better with NIL.  We are the big dog in the NE market with a huge fan base.

I wonder, why is everyone so upset at the portal when it's been allowed to transfer in other sports for many, many years? Why were/are we so comfortable letting anyone transfer unless they play basketball or football?

The NCAA dug it's own grave IMO. For years they had ridiculous rules that penalized a kid taking $15 bucks to eat because he forgot his wallet, or said drinking out of a waterhose on University property was a "violation". All the while saying they had no jurisdiction to go after North Carolina, even though they gave a phantom class for athletes to do nothing.

This all could have been nipped in the bud had they had any semblace of competent leadership... but they had Emmert. I mean, they even constantly get blamed for the one and done rule, even though it's the NBA's rule not theirs. Emmert did NOTHING to clear that up either, and to the contrary acted like it was a NCAA issue.

Just stupid management lead to what is now a free-for-all

Things are in a state of flux.  I don’t like it but to compete with the big boys, NIL will be the difference.
