Not good enough, we have a bunch of okay WRs but no one great. Clifford is not a #1, but he is a terrific slot receiver. However, when you have no one on the outsides that scares ANYONE, it makes the offense much tougher to run

We've just constantly missed on big receivers for years. No one works out. Dotson was a good #1, but we recruited him like 8 years ago. He also wasn't a tall, big guy.

We have a bunch of #2 or #3s and Ohio State has a bunch of #1s. That's been the difference for years.

We have 4 star receivers on the roster and from what I’ve seen from my view while sitting in the stadium is that the problem isn’t always them and the QB deserves his share of the blame. Don’t they say great QB’s make players around them better? It sure doesn’t seem like Allar does that and it also seems like when wr’s are open for whatever reason sometimes he doesn’t see them. The one thing I liked about Pribulas play was that he was confident enough to trust his abilities and threw the ball into tight windows which is something a good QB should be able to do. I’ve seen Allar make some incredible throws and it seems like he has all the physical tools to be a great QB  but where he is lacking is mental.

Eh... I saw no one open downfield today, they were well covered or held on every play practically. When Pribula was in, just about nothing was a set throw, it was a roll out or scramble. Even then very tight windows... against a Wisky team who only beat subpar Big Ten squads.

Every week I'm seeing breakdowns of WRs failing to get open multiple times. I am not buying it's the QB, he's not the reason we lost imo

@roaminglion I’m not talking about just today, I’m talking about his entire time as a starter which I believe coincidentally coincides with the wide receiver issues. There were many incidents last season in games I attended that he missed open receivers and dumped the ball to his checkdown instead which prompted groans from the crowd. When we do get a new starting QB it will be interesting to see how long it takes the wr issue to heal.

@psujoe it won’t take long to see the wr’s heal we watch the future last week against Wisconsin. I went through the same thing with Hack. McSorely sit on the bench being the better QB. smh

We had these issues with Clifford as well. As soon as Dotson left, our WRs took a huge step back. 2022 was a nightmare for Clifford because his wide outs couldn't get open, he didn't just forget how to pass his last year here.

It will all change shortly after Allar is gone and there will be people in here proclaiming “we finally have a good receiver”. Hopefully when he goes to the NFL he’ll have a coach that can help him with whatever his mental issue is because the kid is talented.

@psujoe I agree, I don’t blame DA I blame JF and AK. I said after the season last year DA needed to transfer to USC and I still believe he should’ve. Lincoln Riley is the coach he needs imo. Kentucky would also be a good fit for him.

DA should have had a TD pass today, instead his WR couldn't catch it when the OSU DB had it bounce right into his hands.

DA was fine today, and the last pass our receiver was being held. Crappy play calling on the goaline wasnt his fault either.

12 of 20, only 20 throws. He doesn't call the plays, nor can he catch the ball or get open.

Explain why Clifford in 2022 had shit WRs then, after Dotson left. Was that Allar too?

My memory is that Dotson was a surprise.  As was Goodwin and Juravicious.  In my mind we do not get clear superstar receivers.  And we haven't had a surprise other than a TE in a while?

But maybe receiver recruits are harder to predict than running backs.  And maybe we have done poorly developing solid receivers into surprises.

@roaminglion

S. Clifford
32 to 47 Completions to Attempts, 371 Yards, 3 Touchdowns, 3 Interceptions

2022 against Ohio St we’ve also had some bad ass WR’s over the years.

IMO WR is an interesting position. In HS the exceptional WRs are man against boys in size and speed. In college, same applies to some degree, but advanced training kicks in and coaching extrapolates the tangibles and intangibles to develop the elite group. I think one skill that isn't really talked about is instinctual situational awareness and skill to expose the Dbacks weakness, that's where/how Receivers with less physical gifts become exceptional.

In college ball, an interesting question is, "how many WRs are truly "elite" across the 130+ D1 schools?

Yeah, 47 passes. Which is pretty much the same average yards per pass as Allar yesterday. So your point is what exactly? He threw more passes?

K? So? What's your point?

I guess Florida's offense and QB is better than Carson Beck too? Because Geogia only scored 13 points against Kentucky and Florida scored 48.

You see how stupid that sounds?

Was listening to either LockedOn or 247 while cleaning up leaves this afternoon and the guy said he watched tape and at times recevers were open but Allar has been taught that on passing plays he should go through his progression and if no one is open to dump it to his checkdown. Also said Allar isn’t looking at matchups when they come up to the line of scrimmage.

Pribula gives us more options when he’s on the field. After he had a few snaps against Wisconsin the dang offense looked better since DA took over the starting position last year. More snaps Pribula gets the better he will get and the better Penn St will get. What you see with DA is what you get….struggling to score TD’s

If DA is the starting QB I’m his biggest cheerleader and I’m not sour to want my team to lose because I’m not a fan of his play I wish nothing but the best for DA I just believe what you see is what you get with him and I don’t believe we can beat teams like Ohio St meaning top 5 teams but the team is good enough to beat everybody else you know teams like Wisconsin and Washington we just have to much power for these teams. Of course upsets can happen talking big picture here.

Watching B1G Football in 60 Oregan vs Mich and Gabriel just marched the Ducks right down the field by throwing to receivers tightly covered by putting the ball where only the wr can catch it. That’s something a great QB can do.

Gabriel also not afraid to throw a 50/50 ball.

@roaminglion

I remember the first the Blue/White game Allar played in.  I know he threw one, but I think he threw two long TD's.  I don't remember one of the receivers names, but I thought it was Brenton Strange and the pass was spot on. I can't for the life of me understand why we don't take more shots down field with Allar.  I don't care that we don't have Godwin or somebody playing right now, but Allar has the arm, he is accurate most of the time and we have a 50/50 chance at a catch or Pass interference......that these refs seem to call a lot of in college football.

Yesterday, I thought JF ( or his OC ) called a conservative game and took very little chances.  When they DO take chances, we move the ball.  Look at the USC game, we had NO choice but to take chances and it worked out in the end.  They took chances because they were forced to do so.

That last drive still confuses me.  Allen on a big catch.  Allen on a big run to the 3 yd line.  He covers about 60 yards for us.  1st and 3 and the next 4 plays NO ALLEN. And you know what, Allar could have walked in the endzone the first three plays had he just kept the ball instead of handing it off.

Ok, I am moving on from this game!

Neither is Allar, he's thrown a bunch to Warren this year.

When it's a WR you trust, you do it. Allar threw a good pass the should have been a TD... our WR let the OSU DB catch it after it bounced off his hands. Fleming dropped a wide open pass against Wisky, these drops killed TD dtives yet it's Allars fauly we dont score. Lmao
