Funny... Title IX was used expressly to give women opportunities to get an education and compete in sports. Now that they have that opportunity, they want to be paid above and beyond what they already get within a model that could not support itself without men's Basketball and Football. UNREAL.

Seriously... At this point women would be saying they want to be paid for something that loses money every year, and that has a pro league which is also supported and only exists because of the NBA to boot.

As for Reggie Miller sister being a better player than he was... no she wasn't, if she was she would have been playing for the Indiana Pacers. So sick of this sound byte argument as well. It's like saying some minor league player who had 900 home runs was a better hitter than Babe Ruth. Just because you dominate lesser competition doesn't mean you are "better"

All of these have a value and are given to athletes, and on top of it the doors that can open for a player after they are done competing.

I'm sure I missed something...  So they don't get paid?

4 year Education $______________

Fees and Books $______________

Food & Food Stipend $_____________

On campus Room & Board $___________

Off campus living stipend $____________

Team apparel/Shoes $______________

Weekly Access to Nutritionist $_____________

Weekly Access to Trainer $______________

Weekly Access to Training Facility $______________

Provided Tutors $______________

Team Provided Healthcare $_______________

Team Provided professional life coaches $_______________

So why not take a certain % of athletic revenue from marketing and divide it up among the athletes into a fund that grows interest that they can pull from when they graduate or leave school.

Also I am in favor of the NFL having each team have a development league team that players can tryout for right out of high school and start getting paid, pay taxes, burn their amateur eligibility.  Keep the colleges out of it.

If you are going to pay scholarship athletes then you pay all of them...

Nit...your compartmentalizing these benefits ( nice work ) made me think, why shouldn’t their values be taxed? Of course this is opening an absurd can of worms but paying players is equally absurd.

The issue will be that these players will know be paying an agent and that agent will take a huge cut then the government will take their cut and maybe the NCAA or school has some sort of fee that they will start charging players for being in a school uniform or representing the school colors.  This could not work out well for the players but I don't think the adults in the room are thinking much about it.

Maybe the school could comeback and say if you are going to get an agent or take payment outside whats listed above you forfeit the scholarship, fees and books and that comes out of your pocket when you leave school... So they will have that debt instead.

Y’all know I use to be for paying players but I’ve learned a few things and now I’ve changed my mind. I still don’t understand all of it but it looks like they get s lot. I heard Micheal Mauti  say he didn’t have any money  and he had to eat ramen noodles and man that got all over me I was pissed. It was his Sr year and between that and the sanctions I was wanting to put my foot up Mark Emmerts butt because that dirtbag didn’t have to eat Romeo noodles then all the coaches making millions it just left a bad taste if you know what I mean lol. I agree with nitnation all athletes get the same thing that way nobody can complain if you don’t want to play football then go do something else because some will play for a scholarship.

Southern, I don't know about Mauti.  Regardless of what the rules say, any coach that would let any of his stud players live on Ramen noodles ain't gonna have much of a team, LOL.  Just as an aside, I went to PSU on the GI Bill.  I wasn't an athlete, but I didn't live on Ramen noodles.  Ate a lot of Kraft Mac & Cheese so I could keep the fridge stocked with beer!   I lived in an apartment with 3 other Vets and we went to the local Pizza Hut once a week for their all you can eat buffet.  I can still remember the Pizza Hut manager had tears in his eyes when he saw us coming.  The moral of my story is a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

Bob, do you remember all you can eat fish and all you can eat clam strips at Howard Johnson’s?  One of my room mates said , “ I ate so much fish I thought was going to s_ _ _t minnows”.  Again, you make it work because most of us were starving college kids.

The war cry is always the same: "The NCAA is a billion dollar industry!"

Well, lets take a look at that. There are 130 FBS teams, so lets lets look at those schools. 85 scholarships for football, and a few more for the other sports. Then an equal amount for the women. Let's go low end and say 250 scholarships total. Let's also say the NCAA makes double what people say: $2 Billion... and that's just revenue, not "profit"

So, at the FBS level that's 250 scholarships x 130 schools: 32,500

Now divide 2 Billion by 32,500... It's roughly $61,000. That's using double what they say the NCAA revenues are, so it is actually more like $31,000. So even before any consideration is given to payroll, overhead, and everything else... it's $31,000. And that is just FBS schools.

A scholarship is worth up to $125,000 in some cases depending on the school. All not taxed. So let's say we give them $100,000 a year and they go to Stanford. Full cost of attendence is $70,000. Taxes would be $30,000. Uh... hello! Guess what? They break even at best. Congrats on getting paid.

Paying college athletes will end college sports as we know it. It will come down to the programs that generate revenue. Good bye secondary sports, and lower level conferences like the MAC.

When I said pay the players I’m talking about giving them enough spending money take take their girlfriend out on a date not a 50k salary. I was thinking $100 bucks a week. I just wanted to clarify that.

I don’t understand Mauti’s comments about Ramen noodles. If he was gifted tuition with full room and board-scholarship, weren’t all of his meals paid for? Most of us had few discretionary dollars for snacks and beer but it sounded like all he had nothing to eat. I find that hard to believe especially burning calories during football season.

@lakerie

It was an article I was reading talking about Mark Emmerts salary and it’s when he sanctioned Penn State and what I said is pretty much word for word what Mauti said that’s one reason I said it like that lol. You can probably find it lake it was the 2012 year talking about Mark Emmert salary. If I could find it I couldn’t post it on here I’m still trying to figure that out lol

Reaching back to my college days, I paid for half the expenses and my parents paid the othe half....truly a gift I can never appreciate enough. If I budgeted correctly, I could occasionally have some beers at the Lions Den and MAYBE.. a roast beef sandwich at Roy Rogers or a burger at Frugal MacDugals ( yes, there really was such a place ). Tuition and expenses were much less then even considering an inflation factor but the kind of debt students are straddled with these days, it is outrageous for any athlete of any background to complain they aren’t getting paid just because God gave them at birth skill and size to play the game.

Man, am I ever sounding like my dad.
