did y’all see the bill that’s being backed by Lebron James? I use to be for paying players a little money but I’ve changed my mind because I think it will hurt college football because some schools might be able to pay more than others. I guess don’t try and fix something that ain’t broke. I don’t even like the new transfer rules I think that’s going to hurt college football in the long run. To much change going on for me.if California passes the bill teams in California shouldn’t be able to play outside that state that’s if the ncaa can make that happen. Just my opinion though.
LeBron James is a complete tool, the man is actually trying to trademark the phrase "Taco Tuesday". LMAO
Why not pay the players and complete the transformation of the college game to a pro sport? We already have free agency (the transfer portal), high priced tix & parking, seat licensing (Nittany Lion Club) , over priced concession stand food & drinks (including alcohol at some venues), as well as total disregard for the fan base with focus on the all-mighty dollar. Who knows, after several seasons of competing against the NFL, we may see a merger of the two "leagues" as forced by the old AFL!
I’ve said this before, if pay for play is approved, you can say goodbye to all non revenue generating sports and that is most of them. You can’t tell me ladies basketball won’t demand play if their male counterparts are getting paid. Just the cost of funding football and basketball is enough to sap available funds for athletics. Watch wrestling go bye bye and it’s in jeopardy already. LeBron James doesn’t care and why should he have a say in this anyway, he never went to college.
Simply put, the people who want to pay players are:
Another thing, how do schools fund the additional costs of pay for play? They raise ticket prices. That’s not a smart move considering college football attendance is down. And how about FCS schools? Do their players get paid too? Can they generate the revenue? Not every athletic event is a cash cow like the NBA where it’s just a license to print money.

Add to it that they are AMATEURS. If they want to go pro, then go pro. Allow them to, just cut them loose. Why is this such a big deal in Basketball? I get football to a certain extent, but Basketball?
Soccer players want to get paid at 17 yo???? THEY GO PRO
Golf? THEY GO PRO
Tennis? THEY GO PRO
Baseball? THEY GO PRO
For some reason, Basketball is this sacred cow that players just can't go pro and need to be paid in college. Guess what? The fans will still show up if the top plays decide to go pro. The biggest lie in this nonsense is the star players are what fans come to see... no, they aren't. It's the name across the front of the uniform, that's why we show up.
College is about being competitive as a school, not about star athletes. I'd argue that college basketball would get MORE EXCITING if the star players were allowed to go pro from High School. You want to see stars? Watch the NBA...
I’ve just always wanted the players to have spending money because having a little spending money will keep ‘em out of trouble.
They do have spending money, they get their stipend. Those range from $3000 to $6000 now, depending on the program. That's on top of the new rule that they get to eat all they want because there's no more limitation on how much food the University can give them.
So athletes don't have to pay for school, for food, for training, etc... Yes, training.
What is often overlooked is that they also receive free professional coaching, strength and fitness training, and support from athletic trainers and physical therapists. Those services cost $2,000 to $3,000 A WEEK for players who are training leading up to the NFL or NBA draft. When you put all this together: A scholarship is an incentive package of education, room, board, a monetary stipend, and coaching/training... all which separately paid for could add up to $150,000 a year! Not to mention the publicity given to them by the University, which most likely would not be nearly as big in a minor league system.
The farse of all of this is the supposition that they aren't paid already. They are paid... A LOT.
Saying all that... You can't escape this one MAJOR point: THE NCAA CAN NOT FORCE KIDS TO ATTEND AND PLAY FOR THEM. As many other sports show, if you don't want to be an amateur then go pro. If you aren't good enough, then too bad... That doesn't mean you get to force an amateur organization (no matter how much you think the organization makes) to pay you. Go play minor leagues then. Go find another profession.
I understand that now that’s why I’ve changed my mind about giving them money. Before some of you guys explained that I didn’t know. I heard something today about somebody wanting black athletes to start going back to black colleges but I caught the tail end of the conversation. Have you heard anything about that? It was on a spots station in Augusta, Ga
I have a soft spot in my heart for minor league football. That was some of the best hitting football I ever saw. The Pottstown firebirds led by quarterback King Corcoran! We used to refer to it as $25/game and a free hoagie football! The players drove there own cars to games and chipped in to purchase their equipment. I believe the only health insurance they had was what they paid for themselves (or maybe had through their non-football day jobs). Those guys really loved the game and played their hearts out - no prima donas in those leagues!
AND...another potential hazard. It wasn’t long ago players from Northwestern were introducing an initiative to unionize under the premise they were employees of the school. I don’t know where that stands now but can you imagine college players demanding the same working rights as NFL players where they can negotiate contracts? Only the wealthiest of universities could survive. It would be a whole new world and I for one could never follow Penn State football in the same way.
Lake, are you saying wrestling is in danger of going away in college sports? Man I hope not I love college wrestling. I’m not going to talk politics but I do believe they are some people out there that want football gone because it’s a manly sport and wrestling could fall under the same thing so if it is in jeopardy of going away it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
It all started with everybody gets a trophy. My sons football team had 7 teams in their region and they went 4-7 and made the playoffs lol. My Jr year we were 8-2 and had 24 teams in our region and we sit at home with no playoffs lol. Dang time flies by lol
I am a Lebron James fan in basketball. He’s always been a classy guy IMO and I always pull for him unless he’s playing the Hawks. I like baseball and basketball but I don’t love it like I do football and wrestling.
Alabama is already paying players.
No they are not, Slick Nick doesn’t have to cheat he has players standing in line to play for Alabama.

Men’s wrestling has been on the bubble for years now simply due to economics. It doesn’t produce revenue except maybe in the top 4 big 10 schools and Oklahoma State. There was a time when most D1 schools had wresting but over the years ALL of the SEC schools dropped it and even perennial big east power Syracuse dropped it. One can’t help but think they were casualties of Title 9. What I’m saying is, if pay for play happens in football and basketball, women’s sports will demand play ( and rightfully so ) thus squeezing more money from schools athletic departments. At that point other varsity sports at many schools are deemed financially unnecessary, and that would include my beloved college wrestling. In the big 10 i doubt it goes away at Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan and perhaps other successful programs but I can definitely see it going away at Maryland and Purdue.

In the SEC they call it the money handshake.

If any sport is in danger, it's HS football. I've been saying this for awhile now. Biggest drop in participation. Otherwise, pay to play will destroy college football. If it happens, bye bye college football. It will deteriorate
In effect, NCAA sports are socialism in action. Without football and basketball, the other sports would be gone. They just aren't financial viable, maybe at a few schools here and there but at some point there would be no one left to play anyway. LMAO
Once you pay the players, you're making it a capitalist enterprise. At that point, it's sink or swim for every sport... Survival of the fittest. That would suck, considering the whole point of collegiate athletics was to promote healthy competition between schools and give kids opportunities to get an education they wouldn't otherwise have. All that goes away if you make them professionals.
Again, this is all nonsense. If you want to get paid, then go play pro sports. The NCAA cannot force anyone to play for them. Hopefully the NBA will soon lift their ban on High School seniors, which will probably quiet some of this.
Basketball should go the way of Baseball IMO. Let kids decide if they want to go minor league (G League is established now), or if they want to go to college. However, if they pick college then they are ineligible for the draft for 3 years. Works perfectly in Baseball, so why not for Basketball?
According to an AP article in our local paper entitled College athletes to get paid?:
Sen. Nancy Skinner (Dem) author of the bill said "Perhaps some athletes would finish their college degree before they went pro if we allowed this." I say, WTF is she smoking?
The analysis in the article goes on to speculate "the bill could impact LeBron James' 14 yr old son who is a closely watched basketball prospect in Los Angeles". I speculate, now we know why LeBron is an outspoken supporter of the bill!
Sen. Holly Mitchell (Dem) who went to high school with Reggie Miller (UCLA basketball & 18 yr NBA career) said she believes his sister, Cheryl Miller (USC basketball) was a better basketball player but her professional options were limited after college. Sen. Mitchell said "This is also a gender parity issue for women athletes at the collegiate level to benefit financially when they don't have the same opportunities as their male counterparts." I say, boy did Lake see this coming in his post above!
As you can see, there are many whackos that see this issue as a means to their vested ends. Unfortunately, none of this bodes well for college football. That's fine with these whackos who would be happy to see it go away!
Dem=Damn elected meddler! I wouldn't want to inject any politics into our discussion, LOL.
