According to an article in the Allentown, Pa Morning Call newspaper, Buffalo has lost some key players to the transfer portal. Franklin discussed the impact the NCAA transfer rules are having on college football. Here is an excellent quote:
Franklin once again called the transfer portal “concerning" in that it changes the student-athlete dynamic.
“I think most of these decisions are being driven by football, where the college athletics that I grew up with was driven based on academics,” Franklin said. “And don’t get me wrong, the athletic experience was very, very important as well, but it was in that order. And what I’m seeing right now is a little bit of a shift. That’s, to me, somewhat concerning.”
IMHO he is spot on!
What is odd to me is that UB is typically a destination for transfer candidates considering D1 quality players just not quire good enough for playing time on power 5 programs would drift to MAC schools. I read where wide receiver K.J. Osborn was looking to transfer to the U of Miami (not to be confused with Miami of Ohio. Living close to Buffalo and loving their chicken wings, I’d like to see UB have some continued success. Syracuse is the main brand in New York State but their was an effort to signal UB as the centerpiece university of the state of New York. It’s a great school academically and the older city campus is beautiful.

I always thought UB had the potential to be a Big Ten addition. Big research school, AAU member, Great Lakes location, etc. All they really need to do is put more of an emphasis on athletic, which they seem to be doing. I lived in Buffalo for about 6 years, and in that time (and since I left) they city is really experiencing quite a turnaround.
If you like their old campus, go take a look at their current campus plans. Lots of changes and beautification, especially on the main Amherst location. Old city campus is also getting freshened up, and their newer downtown campus has a gorgeous new medical school.
I think Buffalo is a way under appreciated and misunderstood city. It was my first location after graduating from Penn State. The bars were fun especially in the Allentown section and closed st 4 am. The beef on wick sandwiches and chicken wings sold almost anywhere are the best (especially Duff’s). The citizens are proud of their city, love their Bills and Sabres and laugh at the snow reputation they get. I could never get over the accent called the Great Lakes basin twang similar to Chicago’s. Order coffee “regular” and you get it with cream and sugar instead of black. Anyway, we will likely destroy them as we should but I’ll feel a little bad about that. They are no where close to the team they were last year especially with a freshman QB and 5 ( I think) players in the portal.

Glad to hear you have fond memories of it... Yes, that 4am bar close is phenomenal!
They finally got people to start moving downtown, so the city center is doing fairly well now. That and when Pegula took over the Sabres he poured a ton of money into the arena's surrounding area.
It’s difficult to assess the real reason behind a transfer. Students should not be inhibited where they want to go to school. Franklin is correct that with D1 football players it’s a football based decision. Former rules penalized the student athlete that had a legitimate academic reason to transfer. The current rules aren’t good for college football. It’s a mess.
