Jerry Palm, a CBS reporter is projecting Penn State vs. Auburn ( maybe Alabama ) in the Outback Bowl with Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. The likelihood is Ohio State again beating Wisconsin yet the Badgers go to the Rose based on playing in the Big 10 championship and beating 3 teams currently ranked over Penn State defeating 2. That is Palm’s opinion but selfishly that would be my preference since it would make it better for my family to make the game.

It would be a good learning experience to play Alabama this year to really see how we stack up against one of the best.   It would be the best measuring stick to see how far we come and how far we need to go.   I would love to see it.

@ompa1

I don't think ANY of us thought Penn State could win a National Title this year. Yes, it would have been nice to make the playoffs, but even THAT was a long shot. Playing Ohio State on the road was a loss I circled early in the season and I am sure most of us hoped we could win but knew the stars would have to line up perfect for that to happen.  Had they beaten Minny, maybe 2 teams from the Big10 could have made it in, but I think that was a long shot as well....for various reasons.

Playing Utah or Oregon in the Rose or playing VA in the Orange would be a good finish to this season.  HOWEVER,  playing Bama in the Outback would probably catch way more National Attention....IMO.  I would take Auburn in the Outback Bowl over the Rose or Orange.  I guess the $$ would be better with the Orange or Rose though.

There ain't one bowl game that Penn State can play in that will taste as good as playing in the CFP Title game.  So why not play a big name team like Bama in the Outback and have a nice day?!

GO STATE!!

I would agree that a game with Auburn (or better Alabama) would be a great measuring stick and way more interesting than a Rose bowl with probably Oregon. I would guess the Outback Bowl people are drooling for such a match considering the following those teams have.

It's up to the committee to decide, and since we are only two spots behind Wisconsin it will be interesting to see where we are in the rankings after the BTC.  Should Wisconsin lose a close one, they possibly stay ahead of us but I doubt it. Should they get blown out again, no way they go to the Rose. Basically, yeah they beat Minnesota and we lost. However, they also lost to Illinois and were not competitive against OSU the first time. Should they not be again, they will be passed by us in the rankings.

The way the selection works is the committee chooses the replacement, not the Rose Bowl itself. Since Ohio State (if they win, maybe even if they lose) will go to the CFP, the next highest ranked team goes to the Rose. Barring a Wisky victory or VERY close game... most likely it's us.

My guess is we will be ranked #8 after the weekend. Wisky will fall passed us as will the Big 12 loser. The ceiling for us would be #6. i think we would climb that high should Utah, Wisky, and Georgia all get spanked,  but I don't see that happening. I'm guessing #8 but we will see.

The Rose Bowl would rather have a 1 loss penn St team vs a 3 loss Wisconsin team that got blown out 1 game and lost to Illinois plus they might get blown out again Saturday

@roaminglion

I didn’t say they did I said they’d rather have penn st than Wisconsin but it wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t get what they want.

Roam I'm not sure that's correct. I found this under Rose Bowl selection process:

Should a team from the Big Ten or Pac-12 be selected to go to the College Football Playoff, the Tournament of Roses will traditionally select the next-highest CFP-ranked team from that conference. There is, however, a caveat to that clause in the contract.

“If the next-highest ranked team is in a ‘cluster’ of teams, meaning there is another team or teams from the same conference ranked within several spots of each other, the Tournament of Roses will select the team from that cluster that will result in the best possible matchup for the Rose Bowl Game,” said Rose Bowl Management Committee Chair Scott Jenkins.

Reading that wouldn't you agree that the Rose Bowl committee can select who they want if the Big 10 champion goes into the playoffs as long as they are close to each other in the rankings?

Ahhh... yes I must have missed that. I wonder what they consider a cluster? Anyways I found that interview and the chairman also said: "It should be noted that it is the strong preference of the Tournament of Roses, Pac-12 and Big Ten Conferences, that the highest-ranked available team in each conference be selected as the replacement team."

So strong preference to take highest ranked... but I guess they do keep at least some say in who they get. Thanks for that info!

Amazing reply Roam. You continue to impress everyone with the time you spend ascertaining this info.  .
