I think Northwestern is going to come back to the pack now, after some decent years somewhat competing for the West title. Never quite got there, but they were pretty good.
Here's why: Scott Frost and Jeff Brohm
The West is going to be a lot more competitive in a couple of years due to those two (Barring Brohm taking another job). Very good coaches that will have Nebraska and Purdue doing A LOT better than they have recently. Purdue IMO could be a 7-8 win program, with breakout year here and there. Nebraska, on the other hand, could/probably will be a perennial title contender under Frost. They have all the tools, really a sleeping giant that will bring needed competition back to the West.
With both of those programs coming up, I do see Northwestern putting up many 10-3 seasons anymore. I feel like they peaked, even though Fitzgerald is a very good coach. My bet is Wisconsin and Nebraska will compete for division titles year in and year out, with the other teams rotating good seasons to make a 3rd challenger.
Nebraska has lost their big dawg status IMO, I don’t see them winning no more than 8 or 9 games a year, they’ve been stinking for way to long. Coaching and winning at UCF is a lot easier than coaching and winning in the big 10, I’ve seen good coaches have success in other conferences and they struggled coaching in the big 10.
Agree southern with Nebraska. I believe Frost is a great coach but Nebraska hasnt won anything in decades. Also it is alot harder to convince top recruits to go to Nebraska because of geographical reasons.
All due respect, but you are both completely wrong. Southern? "Stinking"??? They have won 9 or 10 games eight out of the last ten years. Hardly stinking up the joint. Frost is also a former Heisman winning FROM Nebraska. He won't have trouble recruiting.
As for the geography thing, pure nonsense... Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are just fine, have no trouble recruiting. Snyder wins at KState. Washington State is in the middle of nowhere and their coach has them winning. Wisconsin is no amzing destination area, yet they win too.
Simple fact is Nebraska needed a coach and got one. You may think winning at UCF is easy, but he went undefeated. Beat Auburn. Beat everyone on their schedule. The guy is no joke, he played under Osbourne and learned to coach under Walsh, Parcells, and Belechick. He paid his dues working up the ranks, and had success EVERYWHERE. Remember... Urban Meyer was that guy who coached and undefeated team in a "easy" conference with Utah. Guy won 3 NCs since.
I'm telling you, Frost is no flash in the pan. He is a very, very good coach.
I believe he’s a good coach but Notrelame sees the same thing I do, will he be able to get top talent to Lincoln? I don’t think he’ll get enough, I hope he does because college football is better when Nebraska is good.
Why do you guys think it's impossible to get talent to Lincoln Nebraska? Norman Oklahoma is no different. Stillwater Oklahoma is no different. Both OSU and Oklahoma get tons of talent. Nebraska will be fine, as I said they were winning 9+ games 8 out of 10 years without a great coach.
Nebraska had the #22 class in 2018, #23 in 2017, #26 in 2016, and #30 in 2015. And that's all with a coach who was either on his way out (Pelini), or one who is not known for recruiting (Riley). Frost can recruit circles around either of those guys, so I just don't buy your argument that you can't get recruits to Lincoln. It defies logic, considering they've been getting decent recruiting classes the last four years with coaches who weren't strong recruiters to begin with.
Frost will get top 20 recruiting classes in Lincoln, I'm sure of it.
We’ll see but I think that’s where they’ll stay in recruiting, 17th-25th. I’ve heard some of the recruiting experts say in today’s college football kids don’t want to go to Nebraska because nothing is up there, Oklahoma and Oklahoma st play much easier schedules than what Nebraska will. IMO po polini did a pretty good job maybe as good as you can do today at Nebraska. Heck Nebraska even struggled playing in the weak 12. They better be glad they’re in the West and not the east or it would be even harder for ‘em to win 8 or 9 games. I hope you’re right Roam I just don’t see it.
Oklahoma plays an easier schedule than Nebraska? WHAT?
Both played 4 ranked teams, Oklahoma played 4 teams ranked in the top 15 and Nebraska played 4 teams in the top 17.
The year before Nebraska only played 2 ranked teams, Oklahoma played 4
Sometimes I just have no idea where you get your arguments from.
Oklahoma loses 3 games every year if the played in the big 10, their defense stinks just like all big 12 defenses, that’s what’s wrong with Nebraska now is their defenses stink, Nebraska gets a huge break by playing in the West or they’d struggle to get 8 or 9 wins. I’ve even heard you say Roam that the big 12 defenses stink. I believe they’ll get some talent to win 8 to 10 wins but that’s about it. I’m not convinced that Scott Frost is better than Bo Polini we’ll have to wait and see, Bo Polini was a hot coach out there when he went to Nebraska and he did pretty good there considering how bad they really stunk when he got there, Frost is getting a lot better team that Polini did.
Yet they took Georgia to the brink last year, lost in 2OTs. They also beat Ohio State 2 years ago when OSU went to the playoff. Come on, you don't take Georgia to 2 OTs in the semifinal if you are a team that would lose 3 games in the West division of the Big Ten. That statement is ludicrous.
I mean, really... they would lose 3 games to the likes of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Northwestern? Riiiiiiiight. Remember, you are comparing them to Nebraska who plays in the West division. Not the East. They wouldn't be playing OSU, Michigan, PSU, and MSU every year.
Big 12 is better than you give credit for. Yeah, it isn't phenominal, but TCU, WVU, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State aren't exactly chumps either.
The current Little 12 minus 2 is more competitive than the old Big 2 Little 6 of the 1970s and 80s. With all ten teams playing each other, it tends to even things out. Nebraska fans didn't like being in the northern division of the Big 12 which they perceived as holding them back. There were similar rumblings when they ended up in the less strong B1G West, but right now I'd bet that they would be happy with being competitive within their own division.
As far as recruiting is concerned, every place has its own challenges. Nebraska has gotten a lot of talent in the past and can do so in the future. Winning tends to cure a lot of ills. There is a perception that the new early official visits will help Nebraska because recruits aren't as likely to spend their own money to travel so far from home. In the past, by the time that recruits could make official visits in the fall, many of the potential recruits were already committed elsewhere. No guarantees, but the potential is there. Bo Pelini's biggest impediment was his personality. He was the anti-Osborne.
I was no fan of the SEC this past year and I’ve said many times Georgia was overrated and they played a garbage schedule, the NC game was the biggest scam ever in sports this past year, it was a complete joke IMO and leaving the big 10 champs out 2 straight years was really a scam, bottom line is Georgia beating chokelahoma didn’t impress me one bit. I didn’t realize Nebraska was winning as many games as you said Roam, I just think they are way off from competing with Ohio st, penn st and Michigan.
Alabama won 5 recent NCs and Georgia took them to OT. If you know nothing else, that shows Georgia was pretty darn good. Alabama is no joke, they are proven.
You know I picked Alabama to win the NC before the season started last year, even when Alabama wasn’t playing good I still said they would step up when they needed too and they did. Ohio st got much better as the season went and it was a scam they got left out and after that butt kicking they put on USC it looks like I’m right, it’s a shame they didn’t get a chance to play, I just don’t believe Georgia had the pass defense to beat Ohio st, I also believe Ohio st’s defense was pretty good and they matched up good against Georgia ‘s offense, we’ll never know because of this scam we have going on in college football playoffs, it’s a joke.
What kept Ohio State out of the playoff was a 55-24 drubbing to an unranked Iowa team in November. Period. They have no one to blam but themselves.
You can't lose in blowouts to unranked teams and expect to be respected. You say they got better as the year went on???? They why did they get embarrassed by Iowa late in the year? Losing is one thing, getting annihilated by 31 is quite another.
Clemson lost to Syracuse which is way worse than Ohio st getting beat by Iowa, Alabama lost the last game of the season which should be a nail in the coffin from getting in, it’s who they want not who’s the best teams, I said all year Clemson was overrated and I was right, chokelahoma for beat by garbage Iowa st, didn’t Iowa beat Iowa st, this system is crap Roam, it’s a total scam.
