A lot of factors. You start with good raw materials (recruits) and have a good process (coaching) and you get good results. Clearly you don't need 5 star recruits but it makes it easier ask Pete Carol, Saint Nick, Clemson ... But there are 5 star recruits that destroy teams and there are lots of people playing in the NFL that were not 4 or 5 star. They developed late? They were coachable? They have discipline?
It is clear to me that not many college coaches are hired for pure coaching ability ... they better be salesmen.
Do you have the Moneyball algorithm for college football? Tougher than MLB I bet.
