I'll be the troll advocate. 😎

He must be escaping some kind of abuse scandal and therefore PSU got him on the cheap.

There must be something wrong it looks like a good hire.

Does that qualify as the needed troll post for this subject ?

What to bring in 4 and 5 star recruits?  Don't lose to teams like Minny (on the road) and take care of Ohio State this year!

I am feeling pretty good about the Lions in 2020!! I have a really good feeling about this Offense. The defense will get it done!!

Go State!

I agree don't throw 3 picks, blow coverage and drop TD passes in a game decided by 5 points.

Still doesn't change the fact that getting 5 and 4 star DL is and needs to happen.

Go State!

I don't thinking coaching is going to be an issue this year.  Sure, I am certain we will ALL question some play calling at some point, but the season should not come down to one bad decision by a coaching mistake. They have enough talent to compete with everyone, it will come down to how they execute for 4 quarters.  I feel this season is about the players and how bad they want it, not if we have the right coaches in place....because they do IMO.

GO STATE!

After looking at his coaching career I would have to say that this is just another budget hiring under your Athletic director.  Sad..... I'm surprised because the bigger universities make money hand over fist, day in and day out.  Something weird going on.  It sure does seem like Franklin and Barbour doesn't want anyone with the bigger experience next to them on the sidelines, might teach them a thing or two.  They collect fat salaries and bonuses and yet get off by going to the bottom of the barrel.  If you want bigger results and a chance of the NC, up your game and take a chance. Spend the extra money.

The Minnesota loss was not about coaching and they had the coaching to win last year.

PSU lacks what most of if not all teams that are continuing their runs to the top 4, that would be the best OL and DL recruits.  Fact still remains PSU still needs to up their game in this area.

I really don't give a ratzaz about 4 & 5 star recruits.  I believe the true measure of a coach is can he develop the talent available and get the most out of the "stars" on his roster.

I do... Dantonio and Ferentz are great coaches but there is only so much you can do when you have a talent gap.

I can only imagine what they could have done with more 4 & 5 stars

@roaminglion

teams like Michigan State and iowa have a better chance keeping guys 4 and 5 years vs the high profile jobs in college so they might not be as good. Just my opinion though

While I agree about coaching the players that goes for every player 1 star to 5 star.  I 1000x disagree with your opinion and down right lack of knowledge on what it means to get those players.

100% of college coaches disagree with you on this, there is a reason coaches go after those players.

It really has nothing to do with you or a ratzaz.

I humbly apologize for my lack of knowledge.  I'm amazed that you had the time to poll 100% of college coaches regarding my opinion.  I find it very hard to believe that they all had the time to respond, lmao

Yes laugh my ass off that you think one coach would agree with you... Apology accepted.

Coaches recruit the best players they can and that means fighting for the 5 and 4 star players.  You could not show me a coach that would not trade for 5/4 star players if they had the chance.

No poll needed it's just basic football common sense.

That's the trouble today, common sense isn't too common anymore.

Exactly and common sense says those 5/4 star players matter.

Just an FYI... on the defensive line South Carolina obtained commitments from 5* Jordan Burch, 4* Alex Huntley, and 4* Tonka Hemmingway this year before John Scott Jr. left. He was involved in the recruiting of all 3, hopefully this bodes well for his recruiting prowess at Penn State.

Saw that and that is what he needs to do here also...  But then again maybe he should just grab 2 star players and coach them up.

A lot of factors.  You start with good raw materials (recruits) and have a good process (coaching) and you get good results.  Clearly you don't need 5 star recruits but it makes it easier ask Pete Carol, Saint Nick, Clemson ...  But there are 5 star recruits that destroy teams and there are lots of people playing in the NFL that were not 4 or 5 star.  They developed late?  They were coachable?  They have discipline?

It is clear to me that not many college coaches are hired for pure coaching ability ... they better be salesmen.

Do you have the Moneyball algorithm for college football?  Tougher than MLB I bet.

Wrong, you need as many as you can get and you coach them all up...

PSU got the best of both.  Great coach and recruiter
