The phone wasn't ringing , the wife wasn't yelling, the kids weren't texting and Penn State wasn't playing.....about as relaxing as it could get for a Saturday in December!  At the last second, I decided to hunt on the opposite side of a creek where I normally hunt and about 500 yards away from I where I stood Friday evening.  Sure enough, at 10:00 AM I saw a monster of a buck, had it in my scope long enough to count 5 points on one side and he was gone!!!! Unlike my predictions all season, I am fairly certain I am spot on saying it was 10 POINT massive spread!!!

What does this have to do with Penn State football?  Dang heart was beating out of control like it did most of this football season!!!

Tsuga - I just had Buck Fever and couldn't shake it off! LOL. It happened so quick, I didn't have time to react. 500 yards with a 30-06 is probably a little more than I could have handled. He only stood broadside for about 15 seconds and I was fiddling with my scope power to bring him in closer.

If that wasn't bad enough, I swung by there on my way home tonight and in the same field stood three more buck, two smaller and possibly the same big boy with two doe. I have a muzzle loader, so I am going to try one more time at him.  I have one day to hunt before heading to the Citrus Bowl/Florida to fish for a week.  Heck, I should give you the location of where I hunt and maybe you get him for me?? York County grain fed deer are running big this year.

Where at on York County??  My roots are in York County. No worries about buck fever. The next time you see him, look at the rack ONE time and then concentrate on the shot. I typically aim just behind the front shoulder and put the shot in the boiler room. Aiming for the front shoulder is another good option. Best of luck and be sure to return and report!!

Indian Rock Dam State Game Lands.....between York College and York New Salem.  I also hunt in Dallastown on private land, but the local state game lands always has guys moving the deer for you. The best spot is on 83 South between Leaders Heights and the MD Line.....about 800 deer are hit every year and you don't have to drag too far! Can't begin to tell you how many deer I have seen this year walking along the highway without a care in the world.

I know exactly where you're talking about. I used to hunt pheasants there.  There was a farm just below Emigsville that i used to bowhunt. Route 83 pretty much split it in half and became a kill-zone for the deer.  Louis Appell owned it. We could hunt by written permission only and when his daughter came to visit; we weren't allowed to set foot on the farm as she was anti hunting hard core.

I seem to recall you mentioning that you were quite the wrestler back in the day. Did you wrestle for Dallastown?

Live in the Dallastown area now, but born and raised just outside of State College and wrestled in District VI which was the powerhouse back in the day.  Spent most of my time hunting what they call the Kettle in Coopers Gap.....between Reedsville and Alen Seeger.  Unless there is snow in the mountains, this is the route I take to ALL home games.  Head in to the mountain at Reedsville and come out at Tussey Mountain Ski lodge. Beautiful drive and every so often we get a treat.....black bears, Eagles ( Which this is called Bald Eagle State Forest) Turkeys and don't let anyone tell you different.....Mountain Lion's! My father and I saw one the weekend after JVP was fired.  It was heading south away from State College.  I did post this on the PennLive site when it was still active.  My dad and I still joke that this Lion knew what just went down and was heading out of dodge!LOL
