By Ohio State's own admission, Gene Smith and Urban Meyer failed to act appropriately when charges of domestic abuse and behavioral issues of one of the assistant coaches was shown. They stated that they wrongly assumed they should not take any actions because the police didn't file charges. Essentially, Ohio State is saying that they expect their leaders to uphold moral character in their employees, that failing to act because police didn't file charges is not sufficient.

So no uncertain terms, Ohio State just said that if you know someone of your employ has domestic abuse concerns and behavioral issues, and you lie about knowing about them, that warrants only a 3 game suspension. Not exactly a great message to send.

Honestly, they would have been better off saying Urban Meyer did nothing wrong therefore he's reinstated immediately. However, the message they just sent is one of their leaders gets a slap-on-the-wrist for knowingly employing a possible domestic abuser and lying to the press about it.
