I do believe recruiting is very important the best teams have to recruit the best players and use the portal.
I have my own opinion on all of this but I am gonna keep my big mouth shut until I see what this guy does...I will give all of you my thoughts when the season is over and where I was wrong I will say so and where I was right I will also say so...This guy has this year to show me what he is gonna do and how he handles the big stage...I will say this...His credentials and his standing in the coaching community are impeccable...HOWEVER that don't win football games...All I can say is I hope he delivers and I will support and root for him and the teams success...
Yeah but people didn't see the JMU team working in the Big Ten either. After they won 10 games, all of a sudden recruiting got better.I don't worry about it because I can't control it and we haven't played a game yet with Campbell. Getting all worked up about something before we even see the product he puts on the field seems pointless IMO.Anyone that thinks our recruiting issues are nothing to worry about are only fooling themselves. As long as it makes you feel better keep telling yourself "we'll make up for it in the portal" or "recruitng isn't the same today" but the reality is that we have a serious problem and it's not going to get better any time soon.
"While the Penn State Nittany Lions did make an addition to the defensive line this week, it was not the one they were truly focused on. Instead, five star edge rusher Abraham Sesay did the same thing almost every in-state recruit has done to the Nittany Lions: go elsewhere. That elsewhere? Notre Dame. Sesay announced his commitment yesterday even before scheduling an official visit with the Nittany Lions. What makes it even worse is that this is not the first time the Fighting Irish have swooped in and landed a top prospect from the state of Pennsylvania."
I just don’t see the Iowa State blueprint working in the B1G and not being a player in recruiting the top talent in your home state is never a good look.
If Cambell wins, recruiting will get better. IMO
@roaminglion It might just be what he’s looking at. If most of the players he brought over from Iowa St have multiple years left that gives him time to show what he can get done.
One final thought...This guy's philosophy from what I have read and researched is built upon scouting and player development...You all know my feelings on that from my baseball posts...If this guy and his staff can scout well and develop players he is going to excel and bring the success we all want for the program and the university...
Rocco from what I read is making 1.4 million and I heard DA was making 3 million. Thats a big problem imo
Not being able to keep the top Pa talent is a very serious thing. Yes, the proof is always in the pudding, but you must have the best recruits especially in state. There is a reason why the kids are not choosing PS. I can’t yet put my finger on it, but something is going wrong. We never had this kind of problem with the prior coaches to my knowledge. I don’t think it’s all NIL related either. The agents are whispering something to these players. We’re also losing our top committed players. Somehow the recruiting issue must be fixed.
Also MC brought a middle of the pack Big 12 team with him and has recruited like he did before. His theme when he got here is “ more with less”. I don’t think this works for the B1G. PS has a relatively easy schedule this year so we’ll see how it goes. I just have a feeling Nittany fans are not going to be happy. Who knows, but we will see.
@rip trust me brother, we got their best players not a bunch of backups. I’ll take the top 25 players at BYU or Iowa over a recruiting class that’s never been on a college football team. It’s a good trade off imo that’s why we got to get to the playoffs this year. If Rocco stays healthy we can win the NC.
I have my disagreements with you Roam but you hit the nail on the head...What Cignetti did was bring in a bunch of mid range to very good players and develop them...I will take my last breath saying it is all about scouting and player development...The organizations that have the best scouts and player development people will always be competitive and excel...If he can do what Cignetti did we are going to be in great shape...And YES if he wins recruiting won't be a problem...This is my personal opinion...Franklin was a great recruiter but a did a bad job developing the talent he brought in...I also think his job on the field was less than stellar too...Lets see how this guy does...If he has a great scouting department and player development people this program is going to get to where we want it to be...He is banking on those 2 departments...The pressure is on those 2 departments to come through and Campbell is banking on them...Hopefully these folks are top shelf...
@phantom-punch-65 Iowa St was in the playoffs 2 years ago and probably would’ve made the playoffs last year had they not been beat up with injuries but they still won 8 games. They were better than middle of the pack.
To answer your question Pipe it has to be one thing...Money...This guys philosophy is to target spend his money...I will also say the spending in college football at it's current rate is not sustainable...You will see programs hit red ink soon enough and the market will settle down...Lets see how this guy does this season...He is banking on his scouting department and player development people...Hopefully these folks are good...If they aren't it is gonna get ugly in a hurry...
Not sure what you’re looking at but I don’t see any ISU team in the playoffs. Injuries are part of the game. And PSU would have been national champs if only they didn’t lose so many games. The Big 12 isn’t even comparable to the B1G. Eeeech!

You’ve been telling us for years that the B12 sucks and they don’t deserve to be in the playoffs and now you’re trying to tell us how great players from a middle of the pack team are.
You're flip flopping again !!

So now there are dozens of programs out their trying to copy what Indiana did but the problem is that probably 99 percent of those teams don’t have a coaching staff on their level.
I sure as heck hope that’s not what we’re trying to do.
@psujoe the big 12 did suck and was the weakest conference but that doesn’t mean that the top teams in the conference didn’t have 25 good football players on their teams they just didn’t have 55!
My point is no one knows what you got until you see the product on the field. I am reserving judgement until we at least play a game.Yeah but people didn't see the JMU team working in the Big Ten either. @roaminglion gotta give the man a chance. If Rocco is the real deal we’ll finish in the top 4 having a good chance to win the NC. Adding 20 or 25 good football players from a P4 team to a top big 10 team is a dang good place to be in.
As I said before, we shall see what we shall see.
According to everyone the last available big time recruit from PA is headed to Nebraska. There is no positive spin for losing out on all recruiting battles for top recruits in your home state.
Campbell better be a miracle worker and turn this around fast.
How is Nebraska’s out recruiting Penn St for the top players in the state unless it’s about money?

He is paid to win games, not recruiting battles. Franklin won plenty of recruiting battles... didn't translate into winning big games.
I know one follows the other, but man you are getting very worked up before we even see the team play a game.

I just don’t see the Indiana philosophy becoming the norm when it comes to winning championships. Recruit the best players and use the portal to supplement that talent and fill positions of need.
And yes I am getting worked up because I’ve seen projections of where we’re going to be in 2027 and it’s not good.
