I’ve never said it was a bad call matter of fact I’m on record saying it was a good call Ohio st just made a great defensive stop. The Refs were so bad when we played Michigan joe paterno complained about it and the B1G 10 got replay because of it. I really don’t think we’ve got bad calls playing Ohio st it’s Michigan where we got some bad calls by the Refs.
Not pointing to you personally but as a general rule that is how fans look at plays. I don't get caught up in blaming ref's like I said always plays you can point to that caused you to win or lose a game.
Bill, if what you're saying is right I stand corrected. I just think it looked like a designed handoff to Sanders from the git-go.
Most plays are run from keys the QB reads in a run pass option offense... If OSU does not run that stunt Sanders get the first down easy. If Trace keeps it there was outside pressure getting to him quickly and no where for him to run. I think Trace made the correct read, the well timed stunt was just a very good defensive call. I also recall OSU coaching staff saying that stunt was called to stop a passing play so they were looking for pass first.
Not necessarily nitnation because some bad plays beat you when some don’t. The ones that beat you are the worst but even some losses are worse than others. 05 Michigan game, 99 Minnesota games, 08 Iowa game were devastating losses in my opinion. 02 Iowa and Michigan games were pretty bad too. Notice all but one of those losses we got some chitty bad calls from the Refs
I'm not a blame the officiating on losses. In all of those games there was plenty of opportunities to win or lose on your own.
My point being plays like last year's 4th and 5 was a bad call, hell any play that did not work in that situation was going to be a bad call by the armchair coaches. It was a heck of a defensive call but as the game played out PSU gained yardage on that same exact call. It's competition and it happens.
Historically fans break plays down to that level. It worked fantastic, it didn't work the coach knows nothing..
I still say it was a bad call. When you have a QB with the caliber and heart of McSorley you don't take him out of the play by handing off to the RB. You leave the ball in his hands with options and look for him to pull out a winning play. If he doesn't and you lose, at least you gave it your best shot.
As bill pointed out all plays run through Trace and he runs the show on where the ball will go... He is always in the play. On all of his keeps they came from him making a last second read to pull the ball from the RB for maximum gain based off of keys.
Fans get caught up on single plays at the end of games... what really loses a game are little things here and there that add up in the end. LIKE DROPPING PASSES. LMAO

I know what you're sayin' Roam, but at times a single play at the end of the game can erase a lot of miscues including dropped passes!
bottom line, Will Fries WHIFFED...if he burst out of the block and made contact, sanders might go all the way....but he stood straight up....

I don't think he would have been gone, as #39 was in position to slow him down when the play is viewed live. He most likely would have got the 1st down though.
Also, it's hard to say Fries whiffed the block when it was a stunt inside. It's possibly a switch off that was missed, because it's really tough for a Tackle to block someone going into the A gap. I'd expect Fries should have been blocking X while McGovern picked up Young.
Also, Bates was responsible here as well because he was beat on the side. This FORCED McSorley to hand off, because he didn't have the option to run as the OSU DE would have crushed him had he kept it. Remember this is a read option, not a set determined run up the middle by Sanders. There was also a pass option McSorley had...
I think the third option was a bubble screen to Hippenhammer (#12), which may have worked but may not have. He did have some space initially but McSorley would have had to make that decision super quick for it to work out... and a WR would have had to actually catch the ball.
Disagree only because mcsorely said he eliminated running himself because outside right coverage was wide and the pass due to tight man left and double right side coverage. They knew the motion would clear the center as it did on a previous try only they didn’t predict the twist. It was fries that missed the block when he stood straight instead of firing out to clear the lane. Had he done so he’d have plowed Bates into his man and disrupted the player twisting. Miles was to run the A gap but never had a chance. The overhead shows the only deep defender going to the left, 39 didn’t have a shot on a bursting sanders. .....this is from watching the film with a couple coaches back in February at a clinic. They definitely put a chunk of blame on OL not getting it done.

10 men in the box and running the ball, no matter what formation is, is idiotic. Next in line is the pass play on 3rd down that is 1 to 2 yards short of the stick.

Interesting, I saw the tape an didn't really think Sanders would have gone all the way. 1st down yes, but not a TD. Anyways, I think that's something we won't deal with going forward. Fries has more experience now, and I believe we've filled in the OL nicely.
Depth was a big deal the past few years, and Fries was moved around a good deal from right to left and back again. I don't see that happening as much now so guys can focus on their spot more. Plus, the backups we have will push the starters, talent has been brought in and it's gonna be a real good line going forward.
