I just finished reading an on line Sporting News article “The Best and Worst Case Scenario for Each Top 25 Team in 2019”. In the worst case scenario for Penn State it again brings up the rumor of Franklin being the top candidate for the USC job if it comes open again and if Meyer turns it down. My question to those that keep a close eye to such matters and any one else that will weigh in is how close is/was this rumor to reality? Is it just a sports writers way of stirring the pot for readers? Should it become reality, who’s next in line? Moorhead?
If Franklin were to leave, JoMo would be an excellent replacement. Might even be an upgrade depending on the assistants he would hire. Believe me, I don't mean this as a knock on Franklin and I really hope he stays. I just personally like JoMo's style!
Why is USC a better job than Penn State? That place is a coaching carousel with coaches being fired, leaving in the night, interims being jettisoned, another coach being fired on the airport tarmac! Why would anyone want that type of garbage?
I believe penn st HC job is as good as it gets. You can probably get as good but not better.
It's a matter of perspective. To someone who likes the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Penn State is not a destination job. Being HC at Penn State is pretty much an East Coast thing, with its own spotlight. Urbz could withstand the allure of USC for awhile, but would run for cover the second it got hot.
He is not going to USC or any other program... He would have to be fired by PSU and with the job he is doing that is not going to happen any time soon.

JoMo might be a good replacement if at some point Franklin retires...
It's funny many fans knocked Franklin's choice and questioned it. I don't disagree with you, I think JoMo is a very good coach and I would like to see him as the CEO of MSU take them to a top 4 program in the SEC.

You are so right... there are some coaches who like the glitz and glamour of LA. Also many other coaches who would never, ever, want to be in a major city like that. USC isn't in the best part of town either, unlike UCLA.
It always gets me when journalists start throwing out names like everyone wants to be the coach at USC. I remember when Pete Carroll was the fifth choice because no one else wanted it. After he left I still think it's that way... lots of reporters think it's some great job, but no big coaches seem to want it. Just look at who've they hired since Carroll, none of them are what I would call the upper echelon of coaching.
USC is one of the high profile, glamorous jobs in the profession, you can win national championships at USC, in a state, California, where talent abounds...Many college coaches may not want it because , let's be honest here, coaching in rural state college, pa, ames city iowa, Norman Oklahoma,Columbus OH, South Bend,IND, are entirely different jobs, not even comparable..
Youre competing against the Dodgers, Lakers, Rams for newspaper space, and selling tickets,, The ghosts of Kobe and ShaQ, , now Lebron..The fabled Dodgers, personalities like Tommy Lasorda succeed here..
It take s a special person to be successful at USC, one who would probably be great in other walks of life. OnE need look no further than past Trojan coaching greats, John McKay, Pete Carroll...THese guys had pizazz, chutzpah, an aura, whatever you want to call it..I never saw Pete Carroll happier than when he roamed the Trojan sidelines administering defeat after defeat...Look at 30 year old, now TV/Media golden boy Sean McVay leading the RAMS..Its not for everyone, or even , many for that matter .You need not worry about FRanklin; he'd be a poor fit here..
As far as USC goes, I think OJ might be available, LMAO.
From the responses I’m feeling that this is just a tired, old retread rumor meant to get clicks. I never thought much of it when hearing about it months ago, I feel less about it now. That said, just like anyone in any business...when a recruiter calls you owe it to yourself to listen. It’s a great for weighing your worth in the workplace.

Sorry but I'm calling BS on this one. Yeah, let's look at Pete Carroll shall we? It's widely known now that he won because he cheated, not because of "pizazz & chutzpah". They even had their title vacated. That last time they won a legitimate NC was 1978, so they aren't some school that wins all the time.
Since 1990, outside the Pete Carroll years (again, which they were proven to be cheating) they won the PAC conference outright 1 time. Once. In 28 years. So I'm just not buying that it's some great program where people flock to like it's the land of milk and honey, because outside of vacated seasons and getting caught in major violations they haven't done much.
LMAO, I'd look happy just like Pete Carroll if I knew I was getting the best recruits money can buy.
@roaminglion C'mon now..Pete CARROLL is living proof of what an energetic, charismatic coach can do at USC..Two AP national titles, (the AP doesn't vacate titles, nor do Trojan fans bother with that nonsense, LOL , 97-19 W-L record, 6 big bowl wins, 34 game winning streak..
THis is one of premier jobs in America; just requires a special type of person..And please with that buying recruits nonsense, as if Bama doesnt deliver suitcases..;-)
Them Pete Carroll USC teams were some of the best teams ever in college football. Lot of people don’t like Pete but I do. He also backed it up coaching in the NFL winning a SB. JESUS bless my dads soul because he couldn’t stand Pete Carroll lol

1. Pete Carroll is living proof of what money can buy when you use in on recruits... nothing else was proven by him at USC. As I said, it was PROVEN that USC paid off recruits. Thus the title was vacated. I don't care about the AP title, because that's just the AP thumbing their noses at the BCS. Simple fact is USC DID NOT play for the national title that year, LSU and Oklahoma did. Also... I mean LMAO they vacated the games anyway.
2. I don't care if Trojan fans don't bother with that nonsense, so what? There's so much corruption at that school it's insane. OJ Mayo, Reggie Bush, crew coach, assistant athletic director, various other coaches at USC... all found to be cheating this century. How many times is that school gonna get caught? LOL
3. My brother in law went there, so I don't have a strong dislike of the school. Their tradition is cool and it's a very good school. However, it's not a premier job. If it was, big time coaches would want it. Instead USC keeps hiring former assistants or people you've never heard of.
4. This is the question no one can answer: If it's one of the "premier jobs" in America... HOW COME NO ONE WANTS IT? I mean, at a certain point we need to take off the rose colored glasses and wonder why big time coaches aren't falling over themselves for the job. I mean... every single time USC has an opening people are like "OMG every coach is going to want it"... and every single year a list of coaches say "No thanks".
5. They can't even keep an Athletic Director around, those guys keep dropping like flies too. Every single time they hire one, another story comes out about how something nefarious happened during their watch.
You got that right southern, man those USC teams were powerhouses I should hate him too as he bashed ND frequently, but I admired him, he had fun on those sidelines..I had impression his players loved playing for him..
Only mistake Pete made was not giving that ball to Marshuan Lynch from the 1, or he'd have two super bowls..I think he regretted that one..But national titles and a super bowl win have cemented his legacy

I really have to ask this... Have we really gotten to the point that when it's proven you cheated it doesn't matter?
I mean, are we really "admiring" a guy who left USC crippled after committing major NCAA violations? But hey, they were good teams I guess?
i know they got hammered but what did usc do to get sanctions? Was it something about Reggie Bush’s moms house?

In that particular case, yes. There were other cases where they did more nefarious things, too many to really go into. Let's just say 3 or 4 years don't go by without USC doing something stupid.
It's not just football, other sports there too.
Anyways... Pete Carroll by no means stopped his shady behavior when he left USC either. Case and point:
1. His teams have consistently led the NFL in PED suspensions.
2. He’s been nailed three times for holding illegal padded practices.
3. He actually cheated on the injury report, admitting to lying about Richard Sherman. LMAO
The last one was no small thing either, even when he "admitted" to leaving Sherman off the report he tried to pass it off as an omission... like he just forgot because Sherman never missed any practice. However, Sherman did miss practices but was always listed as "NIR" or non-injury related. So him saying he just forgot to list him on the report is laughable, and the NFL thought so too.
How many coaches have players flip him off like Earl Thomas did? LMAO
If you go back and read my posts, It was not my intention to make this a referendum on Pete Carroll's character, nor USC's athletic program ills, of which there are many..I realize that
Again, my point was that this is a high profile, glamorous job, one of college football's dream jobs..The fact some don't want it is not relevant, it is a very difficult job in a big market with intense competition..
The plain fact of the matter is that the right coach can win a national championship here, it is always a very talented roster..

...and my point is that your argument is based on nothing but "it's in a big city, therefore it's one of the best jobs in the nation"
Yes it matters that many head coaches don't want the job, it's complete nonsense to try and explain that away. A "dream job" by definition IS ONE THAT PEOPLE WANT.
High profile doesn't mean dream job. Just because USC is talked about all the time doesn't mean it's a great job to have. All evidence to the contrary. Seriously, just because it's in LA doesn't make it people's dream.
Good grief , Being in a big city adds to making the job one of most challenging in nation, as I said, its not the same in state college, pa, or ames iowa, or Ann Arbor MI....It adds a whole host of challenges
In any event, you have your opinion, I have mine..and IM also going with the experts in the field, the businesses who cover sports for a living. Athlon sports in its issue of May 2019, ranked the head coaching job in all 130 Div 1 colleges, ranking the USC job 6th with this comment:
"The USC coaching staff has the ability to stock its roster with elite talent without ever having to jump on a plane"
With all due respect, Im going with Athlon..
I know what's coming next, an attack on Athlon, spare me 😉
