According to Steve Sarkisian the minimum NIL roster in the SEC is around 30 million and the powerhouses are spending up to 50 million...I don't think it is a stretch to see why Penn State is losing out on these top level recruits...You can bet the Ohio States, Oregon's, Indiana's and Michigan's in the conference are also spending that kind of money as well...Penn State is going to have to ante up if they want to draw in the top talent to compete...I am quite curious to know where the program currently stands as far as their NIL budget goes...I must admit that I was a bit taken aback by that number...I figured 35 million was the upper tier with the NIL spending and by this account that is the minimum price to sit at the table...There is no reason in the world why Penn State can't put up the 50 million or even more than these top tier teams are putting up...Money is the name of the game now and you are going to have to pony up to stay in the game or you are going to be left behind...This is professional football now with no salary cap and a yearly free agency cycle...The folks with the best scouting departments, personnel departments, money raising and financial teams along with efficient roster management will be who competes year to year...I hate to say it but the game starts with the money and goes from there...Oh how things have changed...
Steve Sarkisian reveals estimated cost of SEC roster in college football in 2026
I hope we get a system one day where all the players make the same amount of money and are playing also for a scholarship. I don’t care for what I’m seeing now and I still believe this has a bad ending.
I've been told it isn't feasible for PSU to land top 10 recruiting classes and top 15 is a stretch. Our actions in the portal and recruiting the 2027 class pretty much proves that we don't have the funds Pat Kraft claimed we do.
We lost 2 more blue chip priority targets this week but have more "diamond in the rough" or "underrated" 3star guys lined up to replace them!
I'm with you, buddy. Kinda like semi-pro FB where everybody gets $20 a game and a free hoagie!
@psujoe we might have to recruit the way BYU does if what you say is true. We can win but we can’t afford to miss on our QB’s and try our best to keep guys on the team for 4 or 5 years. It can be done Indiana just did it. I believe the money will dry up in the next 5 years anyway.
Pros don't get the same $ across the board. They get paid by what position they play & how good they are.
@rip you still living to the 60’s RIP 😂 I’m satisfied just to get the 80’s back 😂
I believe Penn St will spend money but spending money like the FD thinks I’m not so sure about that. I’m not saying the FD is wrong on what they might need to spend to stay in the top 5 NIL I just don’t believe they think they have to do it. We have a good coach and history we just need to be in the top 15 NIL and we can win. We had the opportunity and was in position with talent to win 4 or 5 NC’s the last 10 years we had the talent we just didn’t have the Joe Paterno or Kirby Smart mentality to get it done on the field…find a way to win! I could’ve used other names but I used one I love and one I don’t love 😂
Let me ask all of you a quick question...The only professional sport without a salary cap is baseball so frankly that is the only yardstick I have to gauge the success regarding spending money on rosters...I believe the last "small market" team to win a world series was the 2015 Royals...All of this "money ball" stuff sounds good on paper and you can field competitive rosters operating this way and every once in a while one of these teams will catch lightening in a bottle and win a world series...The overwhelming majority of the time it is a team with a large payroll that wins...Look at the Yankees of the past and the current Dodger teams...Talent wins and by and large proven talent costs money...My personal opinion is why is a program like Penn State acting like they are the Pittsburgh Pirates when in fact they could be the New York Yankees if they choose to be? Are we in the top 15 in NIL spending? I have no idea what the NIL budget is but we sure as hell ain't acting like we have money to spend...I happen to agree with Roam on this one regarding spending the money...I personally would be targeting proven players in the portal rather than chasing high school recruits who haven't done anything yet when it comes to spending NIL money...Not to say there aren't high school kids out there that I wouldn't make sure I would be in the conversation of getting but I am also risk aversive...This is where your scouting and player development personnel come into play along with a solid numbers guy along with a General Manager to handle roster management...This is the NFL without a salary cap and a yearly free agency cycle...I would argue handling rosters and player assessments are more difficult in the college game than the pro game right now...To think you are going to money ball this thing and win championships is pure fantasy...What infuriates me is this if this was MLB Penn State would be considered a large market team and therefor why are we acting like this is the Pirates? You want to compete with the big boys in this thing you better be prepared to ante up because I don't give a good God damned who the coach is or whatever you think you got if you don't have the talent to compete you ain't winning...I have my opinion on this season and what I have seen so far...I will reserve comment until the season is over...
As I mentioned there are always outliers...So they were the 2015 Royals...I can promise you that they are spending a considerable amount of money this year...I expect that figure to at least double...
@the-funeral-director I believe this year we will be decent only because of the schedule but we need to go big in the portal after the season.
What do you consider a "decent" season Homer? 1 loss and a loss in the B1G championship game and a CFP invite? What are your expectations and what do you consider a failure? I am curious to see what you think...

There are so many unknowns and we have a lot to learn about this team but at this point in time I’d say with our schedule 3 losses is a failure and 2 losses would be decent. It may take an 11-1 regular season with an appearance in the B1G championship game to get us into the playoff and if we do that it was a very good year.
All American baby 🇺🇸
Looks good ! My POS Green Mountain pellet grill isn’t working right again. Don’t ever buy anything made by them !!
Out of the last 10 WS Champions, only 4 were in the top 5 of salary and 3 were outside the top 10. Kansas City, Atlanta, and Houston did not have big payroll. Only 4 out of 10 were the "astronomical" payrolls you talk about.Let me ask all of you a quick question...The only professional sport without a salary cap is baseball so frankly that is the only yardstick I have to gauge the success regarding spending money on rosters...I believe the last "small market" team to win a world series was the 2015 Royals...All of this "money ball" stuff sounds good on paper and you can field competitive rosters operating this way and every once in a while one of these teams will catch lightening in a bottle and win a world series...The overwhelming majority of the time it is a team with a large payroll that wins...Look at the Yankees of the past and the current Dodger teams...Talent wins and by and large proven talent costs money...My personal opinion is why is a program like Penn State acting like they are the Pittsburgh Pirates when in fact they could be the New York Yankees if they choose to be? So no, the majority of winners recently were not those teams. If anything the data from MLB says you have to spend, but not astronomically. Most teams that win the WS title were in the top half of payroll, but not the top 5 spenders. Of course the Dodgers have won 2 in a row, but Ohtani is a freak of nature.
So 40% of the teams that have won the last 10 world series came from the top 5 payrolls and the 3 were outside of the top 10...So 70% of the last 10 world series champions were in the top 10 of payrolls...and the other 3 were in the middle of the pack...So this money ball nonsense is just that...nonsense...Talent matters and proven talent costs money...Like I said the best organizations from a personnel and scouting department standpoint are the Houston Astros and the Tampa Bay Rays...Tampa does the best job of identifying and developing talent in major league baseball...So yes, if you have great scouting and personnel departments you can overcome the monetary disadvantage of big spending teams...I personally always go with the money...The money usually always wins...Campbells strategy is to bring in these 3* & 4* players with upside and develop them...We are about to find out if he is going to put together the Tampa Bay Rays or the Colorado Rockies...This is going to go 1 of 2 ways...He can put together a perfect regular season or he could lose as many as 4 games...It's going to be an interesting season...
What a ridiculous conclusion, considering many of those teams used analytics and sabermetrics (what Moneyball is) to construct their rosters. If you are going to say Moneyball is nonsense, at least know what it means. It's a way of looking at how you spend money, not just trying to spend less. Most teams use it, so no it's not nonsense. Most, if not all, MLB teams use advanced analytics to construct their rosters.
Moneyball is not about spending less, it's about spending money wisely. I know a lot of people think it's just "spend less" because of the movie, but those people miss the point of the movie. Billy Beane used sabermetrics to construct his roster wisely with the money he had, and yeah it worked. So much so that the teams with more money started using it too. That's what happened at the end of the movie, the Red Sox owner saw the value in Billy Beane's system and committed to using it with a much bigger war chest. It worked, and now practically every team does it.
I am quite aware of what Moneyball means and knew Billy Beane and played against him...I am well aware of sabermetrics and what the ramifications of this is to the game...You see there is one big flaw to this...In my personal opinion stats and tendencies have their place in every sport but in today's baseball the eggheads have taken over...These people are all vying to prove they are the smartest people in the room...A broken clock is right twice a day...Here is the flaw with the current state of analytics in baseball...Nobody has a feel for the game anymore...None of these eggheads ever played...They have no idea what it is to grind through a season...They are clueless as to how a player may feel that day...If a pitcher has his "stuff"...They know the game through a sanitized computer screen spitting out stats...This is why many of the great managers quit or got fired...You are correct that every team has an analytics department...The problem is the analytics department can't predict a player getting hurt, his state of mind on a particular day or how he is feeling as these are human things that a computer has no way of knowing or measuring...I am not saying this doesn't have value but my personal opinion is these organizations put far more importance on this than they should...Give me a great scouting and personnel department...Give me a manager and coaching staff that have a feel for the game and I will take that over these computer eggheads any day of the week...The manager I always admired was Jim Leyland...A recent example of a great manager is Buck Showalter...These guys know the game and have a feel for the game...Showalter was shown the door in Queens because upstairs made him do things that he didn't agree with and as it came to pass the stuff they made Buck do didn't work...We are going to find out how all this works out for Campbell...Let me be clear...I am hoping this all works out...I am rooting for him...But he loses to USC at home in a whiteout, Michigan on the road and Washington on the road the fan base is gonna see a lot of deja vue all over again...Sometimes doing the obvious is the smartest move instead of trying to prove you are the smartest person in the room...The current Mets GM David Stearns is learning this the hard way...
Meatchicken, OSU, Oregon, USC and UCLA are all taking a different approach to recruiting and NIL than we are and we’ll all see how this plays out in 2028. It can even be argued that Wash and Indiana are also being more aggressive than PSU.
We all thought the schedule last was was easy and it turned out to be a very competitive schedule. I’ll take good 3* and 4* players all day long if I got a good QB that can make plays when the games are on the line. It’s all about the QB and I guess that’s why MC brought his guy in he knows what’s he’s got.
