I'd say when we are a 1 or 0 loss team, then we'd be elite. 2 losses is just below elite IMO.
Though as you say, that definition will change because some 2 loss teams will be in the CFP soon.
@roaminglion did you see Alabama just score Young made a play in crunch time. Elite teams find a way. This ain’t the strongest Tide team but they find ways to win. Still some time for LSU but they just choked on defense because they had young, they just didn’t bring him down.

We’ll also be shopping for a new DC according to the guys on the penn state post game. They think he’ll be one of the hottest commodities in CFB in the offseason and teams will be coming for him from everywhere. I was hoping he’d last at least 2 seasons.
Point is still the same? 4? 8? 16 is definitely stretching it but if you are in the top 12 every year you are pretty elite. We would consider elite being in the top 12 every year IF one year we made the show.
So we are the AP 5th ranked team with 2 losses and yet our losses are to 2 and 4? Even if we are ELITE the voters don't perceive it that way.
Now to be devils advocate, and something the voters don't do the work to know. Auburn was a coaching weakness and MN and IN we got to play against a backup QB that wasn't up to the task. But then you look at the 2 loss teams above us with the same detail and? I mean AL has snuck by two middle teen teams. A lot is reputation and the computer doesn't seem to fix the voter bias very well but it will get fairer with more games.
MD is poor without the starting QB whom is out. The backup should be getting better. MSU seems to play better if they suspend a bunch of guys.....
Our schedule has turned out softer than I expected although UM is better than I expected.
I guess at the end of the day my opinion on being elite is this: If the goal is to win a National Championship, are you contending or getting to the playoff on a regular basis? Not once, but multiple times. You don't have to win it, but you have to be there in the mix.
The only season I see us as in the mix for it at the end of the year is 2016, all the other years we weren't. There was no chance of us going heading into the last game.
@roaminglion I believe 2017 was the best team under James Franklin we just choked and couldn’t get it done in crunch time. 2016 team was good though
