1. Record vs OSU and Mich (assuming both remain relevant): 2-1, 3-0?

2. Record vs top 10: 50%, 60% or higher?

3. No loses when favored?

4. Make the CFP?

Anything else ??

Make the CFP and dont get embarrassed in the semifinal like Michigan State and Michigan did when they went.

Who the f*&^ cares whether Penn State is considered elite? Can you not just watch the team play and enjoy the games? That was a rhetorical question since I already know the answer.

81,  only 12-13 hours of football is played each year. However, fans are on this forum and others all year long discussing pros & cons, pos & negs of our team and college football in general. It's part of the fun of being a fan.

Personally I care, I don't watch the game because I want a participation trophy. I'm cool with the players giving it their all and losing, but short term. Long term, yeah the goal is to win. And win it all, not sit back and be happy we are a 2nd tier program resigned to the fact we will never be elite.

We should want to be elite, that should be a goal. I don't think it is in the best interest of anyone to say we dont care about getting better, just glad to be here. IMO a goal should be to be the best. It doesn't have to be the only goal, or even the most important one... but it should be one of the goals, shouldn't it?

A few years ago Coach Franklin was the one who brought up moving his team from "great" to "elite". I think fans can discuss his progress.

Nowhere in my post did I say that winning is not important. I also said nothing about participation trophies. All I said was to watch and enjoy the team play the game. I personally think the team is elite. We have always had good graduation numbers. We never have any recruiting violations. The only problem that could have been a NCAA violation that I can remember was when one of our Heisman candidates accepted a suit from an agent. Joe took care of that by sitting him out of the bowl game. We also win way more game than we lose. Yall do know that almost half the teams lose each week. That is all. Cue the attack dogs.

@psugrad81 Didn't mean to attack you, just answering the question "Who the eff cares?" I know it was rhetorical though 🤣

Sure I watch and enjoy the games, but I was saying wanting to be elite on the field and enjoying the games are not mutually exclusive. People can do both.

That said, I am very glad you enjoy the games... as do I. That's how it should be 😀

Coming in second doesn't even come close to having the same feeling as what coming in first does!

Ironic statement coming from the poster who sacasticly responded with "To hell with those people that think the object of the game is to win !!"

Nothing ironic about it at all because yes it was sarcasm and no I’m not about to change my tune.

@psujoe  let me say this then I’ll let it go because we all got our feet dug in where we all stand on this season. We either try like heck to getting  where Ohio St and Michigan is or we become Michigan St and Wisconsin. If we start throwing away seasons because we lose to Ohio St and we  start losing 5 or 6 games every year, then we’ll definitely become  Michigan St and Wisconsin. I’d rather win 10 or 11 games a year and fight like hell to beat Ohio St than become Wisconsin or Michigan St. Racing and wrestling is one on one on the race track and mat with a team behind you when football is a totally team sport. I loved Dale Earnhardt and I respect him and Cael but the 2 sports are totally different than football. Like the Tuna said, you are what your record says you are and I’ll just leave it at that brother.

@southern-psu-fan We already are Wisconsin/MSU/Iowa which is one reason why I continue to argue "staying the course" isn't working and hasn't been working for a while.

Time to change things up

But no one stated he said winning wasn't important? I said playing their best and losing short term was okay, but long term winning and being the best is the goal.

No one told him winning wasn't important at all, except you.

"Nowhere in my post did I say that winning is not important. I also said nothing about participation trophies."

I did mention participation trophies though, and he specifically seperated that out from the other part.

They put up a graphic during today's game showing how many times PSU was in the top 12 recently.  We would have made the 12 team playoffs a lot.  The point is more perception than reality, or definition of 'Elite'.  We beat OSU and they make the playoffs not PSU.  PSU is elite when they make the playoffs....?  Or with 12 teams they will need to win a game in the playoffs?

If we had a 12 team playoffs we would’ve made 4 playoff runs it’s the last 2 years that’s got people upset which is understandable. Water under the bridge let’s look forward because we gotta good team and we have 4 more games to win. Allar looked good today and we will be loaded next year. As fans we just get frustrated when we lose

I’m not sure why I think this way but when it comes to anything college football related I’ve always thought of the top 8 as elite.
