They look great.
NW has taken a big step back. Rutgers put a butt kicking on ‘em.
Didn’t want to start a new post but come 9/23 it’s time to start kicking Iowa’s ass again! I got that game circled
They had a 14 point first quarter against a very bad Utah State team that adjusted and won the next three quarters 14-10. You go ahead and circle THAT game! Penn State will blow them out of Beaver stadium!
Southern, I think last nights game was little more than I realized for Penn State and they got it done with few mistakes. Last nights atmosphere was more like something you would expect 4 or 5 games into to the season. It was basically opening up with a White Out game against a not so bad Power 5 team.....and I expect WVU to make a bowl game this year! WVU is not Ohio State or Michigan, but they are a far cry from Indiana or Central Michigan that Ohio State and Michigan played.
I am taking ND over Ohio State. Ohio State beat Indiana by 20, but Indiana has NO offense at all! And Michigan? Did you see their first 9 games before they play Penn State? They play 9 bad teams in a row! I am not saying Penn State has tough schedule, but we do play two ranked teams before Michigan assuming Iowa gets pass Iowa State.
GO STATE!!!!
@southern-psu-fan I agree. That gum chewing mfer needs to be put in his place. I’ll be there wearing white under the night lights of Beaver Stadium. I can’t wait.
@mtnittanylion Kindof tough to gauge ND. They have played nobody. Navy isn’t the same team it was a few years ago under Coach Ken N. and their second game was against Tennessee St so no real competition.
I don’t think ND has the athletes to beat Ohio State. If you gamble take Ohio St Mtnittany lol
You're absolutely correct in your assessment of the Iowa head jerk. God I miss Hayden. That man was a true gentleman.
They look great.
Norvell was a GREAT hire for FSU. Man he has turned that program atound quick, you are right they looked vety good
You guys can hate on Ferentz as much as you like but the fact is that he is a much better COACH than the clown that we have. JF is a better recruiter but that has a lot to do with location. When it come to actual coaching JF is nowhere close.
it is still my opinion that we should have opened the checkbook and thrown so much money at Ferentz that he couldn’t resist coming here. One thing is for sure he would have won at least as many games as Franklin has and when you win at PSU the kids want to come so he would have done much better recruiting here than he does at Iowa.
Face it , since JF has been here we’ve consistently outrecruited them by a wide margin but we’ve been no better than them on the field and they put more guys in the NFL than we do.
Ferentz > Franklin and it’s not even close.
Come on homer, James Franklin did it at Vanderbilt too. Ferentz is a 7, 8 or 9 win coach coaching in the big 10 exactly what James Franklin was at Vanderbilt coaching in the SEC. Fetentz takes a big back seat to James Franklin imo. Correct me if I’m wrong but James Franklin shut the hammer down on Iowa when he got to Penn St. I believe his record is 4-2 against Iowa and will be 5-2 after we kick their ass in a few weeks. James Franklin won’t let up after the crap Iowa pulled a couple of years ago just wait and see baby. Big time ass kicking is coming Iowas way on 9-23 baby y’all can’t bank on that lol
@southern-psu-fan you’re right we all CAN’T bank on that !! Thanks for agreeing.
With the new schools coming in next season I fear I may have to bump JF out of the top 5 in my B1G coaches ranking.

Yes he's doing it at Iowa but that doesn't mean it absolutely translates to Penn State and 11+ win seasons here. James Franklin did essentially what Ferenz is doing at Vanderbilt, a school in the SEC with no football tradition whatsoever. Ferentz didn't take over a bottom feeder program like Franklin either, Vandy is a dumpster fire and amuch worse program historically than Iowa... hands down.
In fact... Hayden Fry (3) won more Big Ten titles than Ferentz (2), and Iowa was more consistently in the top 25 with Fry than Ferentz. Before you rage, I'm not saying Ferentz is an average coach... far from it, I think he's very good. But I also know the guy before him had as much, if not more success at Iowa than he has. So it's not as though he's pulled a miracle because he wins at Iowa, the coach before him did the same thing. Franklin, on the other hand, did something at Vandy that no one did in 90 years there.
I never said he was better than Haden Fry and I couldn’t care less about what JF did at Vandy. If JF was so great there maybe he should go back because he sure as hell hasn’t been able to finish the job here. As I’ve stated above JF out recruits Ferentz by a wide margin every year but Iowa puts more players in the nfl than we do and is just as competitive in the league as we are. Somehow the homers of this forum’s theory that JF is a better coach makes no sense. I’ve also stated a hundred times on this forum JF does less with more while the truly great coaches do more with less.
Ferentz > JF and it’s not even close.
I am with you, hard to tell what ND has, but they have a better Offense than Indiana and this game is at home for them. They play NC State next week on the road and NC State is one those teams that can beat you if let them hang around too long. I think we will get a better feel of what they have after this game. I think Ohio State loses 3 games this year.....and Penn State will be one of them!
Week 1 is always interesting, but week 2 will give us a better idea as to who has what. I wish Penn State played a little better vs WVU, but I like the offense and I think they are going to be just fine against the better D's in the Big 10. The defense should be able to adjust this week, get some good playing time (and more experience) and I think they will be ok too. By no means am I overlooking Iowa, they are well coached and they always have good players. I just think Penn State's offense will be too much for them and I think our defense is going to be just fine as the season goes on.
Michigan is the game I have circled. Corum will be a problem for Penn State ( if they don't figure out how to stop the run real soon ) and McCarthy has the experience to keep drives going unlike what we saw from the first year starter at WVU. But then again, Michigan beat a bad East Caroline team to start out.
Who knows at this point. I am pleased with the first game, I hope they stay with Felkins as the Kicker, engage the TE's more and get these LB's playing better. They have two weeks of practice and an easy game before they play Illinois on the road which will be a good test for this team.
Go State!
Indiana usually plays Ohio St tough but Ohio St always finds a way to win. ND won’t get the same Ohio St team that Indiana did they’ll get the team that’s ready to play. When games in the schedule get tougher Ohio St gets tougher that’s why it’s hard to judge teams on how they played other teams. I’ll pull for the team that you have money own because I can’t stand either team lol
@psujoe remoh, I know you said James Franklin is a better recruiter but wouldn’t you agree that recruiting is 50% of coaching? Then it’s whoever wins the most games and head to head. If you look at just that James Franklin is on another level. Ferentz is a good coach and he gets good players and like you said he’s put more guys in the NFL and he still has a losing record against James Franklin and James Franklin is winning Rose Bowl, cotton bowl and fiesta bowls and a big 10 championship in the last 9 years. Forget Vanderbilt let’s just judge since 2014 when JF got to Penn State and look at the records?
Ferentz is a Pennsylvania native. Ferentz is now in his 25th year at Iowa and I believe he is not going anywhere soon. I like what he has accomplished and what potential he has. Even with some of his downturns in football he always musters something up.
@southern-psu-fan no I wasn’t considering recruiting as part of actual coaching.
I never said he was better than Haden Fry and I couldn’t care less about what JF did at Vandy. Ferentz > JF and it’s not even close.
So they are just as competitive as we are? Okay, lets just examine that for a second.
- They play in the West Division, a division that has never won the title game and is completely inferior to the East Division.
- Franklin is 4-2 vs. Ferentz, with the 2 losses coming in COVID year and the year after (his two worst years)
- Franklin has been to four NY6 bowls since 2014. Ferentz has been to one: where they were obliterated by Stanford
- Franklin has won 11 games four times since 2014, Ferentz only three times in his entire career
- Since 2014, PSU has been ranked in the top 10 four times. Iowa only once (the season they were destroyed in the Rose Bowl)
- Franklin took over a program deep in sanctions, and won the Big Ten Title in year 3.
So yeah, I get what you're trying to say... but it's simply your opinion because by no college football metric has Ferentz bested Franklin in any way. Quite the opposite. I can rattle off plenty of amazing coaches at smaller school who failed miserably when taking over a bigger, more prestigious job. Being good at Iowa doesn't guarantee you'll be great at Penn State. I'm not saying Ferentz would not be successful, he very well may have been... but you are kidding yourself if you think playing Wisconsin and Nebraska every year is somehow the same as playing Michigan and Ohio State.
So I call BS on "Iowa is just as competitive in the league as we are." If you call winning less games in an inferior division, winning less bowl games, consistently being ranked lower, and losing in the head-to-head meetings "just as comeptitive"... then I don't know what the heck your definition of competitive is.
but Iowa puts more players in the nfl than we do
Yeah, I wanted to call BS on this too but wanted to make sure. Since 2015 we've put 46 kids into the draft, Iowa has put 30.
So no, Ferentz and Iowa isn't putting more kids into the NFL... and it's not even closely. Also, Penn State has more active players (9th most of any school) in the NFL than Iowa, most of whom played for Franklin (I believe Robbie Gould is the only one who didn't). So your assertion is a complete fallacy.
@roaminglion Who was the NW coach years ago that did really good and left for Colorado and was complete garbage? Colorado was pretty good back then until the NW coach got there. For that reason is why I’ve always said Fitz should stay at NW lol

Gary Barnett, but to be fair he did basically have the same record in both places.
@roaminglion yeah Gary Barnett. I ain’t going to lie, I thought with the job he did at NW he was going to be winning NC’s at Colorado.
If the east is so much better than the west I wonder why our winning percentage against them since JF has been here doesn’t show it.
Every B1G team had covid years so continually using that excuse is ridiculous. And quite honestly it’s rather obvious why the East has won more conference championships, it’s because of the two teams that have dominated the conference for decades and dominated us since we joined league play.
