@roam
Dreaming!
So... you think the focus was on academics 20 years ago? Now who's dreaming?
You just made JoePa roll over!
By saying what he thought? Lmao, what do you think the grand experiment was? He knew back in the 60s that lots of schools didnt care about academics.
Joe Paterno knew other schools sacrificed academics for athletics, WHICH WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF HIS GRAND EXPERIMENT. He set out to prove you could have one without sacrificing the other
So, why exactly would he roll over? Because I agreed with him that academics werent a focus in many college football programs... even back then?
You dont seem to know Paterno at all with a statement like that
With all due respect, I don't give a ratz behind about other schools or college football as a whole. My point, going back to my original post, is that I'm concerned with the latest academic measurement which places us lowest in our conference compared to our historical record of being at or near the top of all Division 1 schools. I sure hope Franklin and the powers that be are concerned too and take the necessary steps to continue JoePa's "grand experiment". I want Penn State to win a National Championship and win it the right way - with players that excel in the classroom as well as on the field. Otherwise, the phrase "Penn State Proud" has a hollow meaning.
With all due respect, that coach who you are implying may not be taking it seriously had a PERFECT SCORE in 2019 and many years of very high quality APR
So back to my original post, I am not sounding the alarm bells for what is a statistical anomoly. I am not going to start acting like Franklin doesnt care because of 2 years which had wildly extreme circumstances.
I'd rather give the benefit of the doubt to a coach who had his team at the top of the conferece APR for years until COVID. That is why I dont give a ratz behind about APR from 20-21.
And I was talking about college sports in general because Sky brought up "revenue sports" and how NIL has taken the focus away from academics. My point was, on whole, colleges were never focused on academics... It wasnt NIL. That was why Paterno was special, unlike most others he did care
@roaminglion: I completely agree with your statement that "College football as a whole has not cared about academics for a long, long time. NIL didn't change that".
I can't help but believe that the push for a "true National Champion" through the evolution from the Bowl Coalition to the Bowl Alliance to the Bowl Championship Series and now the College Football Playoff has played a significant role in the academic degradation. Logically, there were issues before the Bowl Coalition and coaches like Switzer, Osborne and Bowden seemed to care more about wins than the academic achievements of their "student-athletes".
Money corrupts.
I'm thankful that Football season is here and that we are able to enjoy the games. I'm headed to Birmingham on Thursday to watch UAB take on North Carolina A&T. Trent Dilfer is now the coach of UAB and this will be UAB's first season in the AAC.

Tae, that's well said. I don't mean to sound like money never corrupts anything... to your point is has a big impact. Have fun at the game!
@psujoe what is this doing in this topic. Start a new topic and it belongs in the water cooler. This has NOTHING to do with PSU football.
Looks like someone has his liberal panties in a bunch.
I believe Franklin cares about academics too. The intent of my original post was to share our latest ranking (which was uncharacteristically bad) and to express my opinion that it was cause for concern. In other words, something that needed to be looked at. That's all.
When intelligent discourse is out of your reach, always resort to name calling.Looks like someone has his liberal panties in a bunch.
LOL at the person claiming to be intelligent that thinks this thread is about football.
He obviously forgot about his promise to “never read or respond to my posts”

ya know it's funny, I was thinking about that promise when I responded to your comment. I guess you are just a better man than me all around.
@southern-psu-fan a lot of strange stuff going on behind the scenes at PSU. I’ve heard talk about trustees trying to sabotage the athletic department but this is the first actual incident that has been blamed directly on them that I know of.
What are they going to repeal, the timing? I mean, there's 130 FBS programs and the trustee's think they were out to get us with the timing?
I saw the article and y’all were discussing it, so I posted it. This stuff is above my head but I do read what y’all have to say about it. Lol
There was a time when you could go onto the NCAA website and see academic performance, minority performance by sport vs normal student body, and the metric they use now which I don't think is pure results but improvement. When I looked up one of the metrics a SEC team boasted about I learned it was improvement. So it is easier for a bad performer to show IMPROVEMENT compared to NW.
At the end of the day the NCAA has made its decision anout what they want and we aint hear to pray skool.
