Here is a headline we don't need to see and should be concerned with:
Penn State football’s academics sink to bottom of Big Ten after worst score in a decade
Our Academic Progress Rate was 914 in the 2021-2022 academic year was our lowest in over 10 years!. Our latest four year average after last year was 958. Should your average drop below 930, the NCAA will issue penalties which can include limiting practice time or barring post season play. If our score for this year drops below 900 we will be at risk for discipline.
I am actually not worried, mainly because this recent score is for the COVID year and the year after. My hope is we just didn't handle it well, in the classroom or on the field and the next report will show progress after that dark period.
@rip Why shoukd I be? This report is not for last year, as I said iy is for the COVID year and thr year after.
I think last year's report will look better when it comes out.
How many other teams in the country or big 10 had the same problem during Covid?
I don't believe you can blame the 914 for Academic Year 2021-2022 on COVID. Even if you lay the blame on COVID, the question becomes why were we impacted more than other B1G schools? Our score was the lowest in the conference!

I don't care about the reasons, COVID is over and I know we didn't handle it well. I saw it on the field, and I believe it probably impacted us in the classroom. We are past it and had a great year on the field in 2022, and I believe we most likely did better in the classroom as well.
We've always been high on the academic rankings, and 2 random years out of the entire history of our academic success doesn't concern me yet... especially when you consider those two years were impacted by a pandemic. To me, those years are outliers, and I believe the next report coming in October will show it.
You're right about our past academic record. I sure hope you're right about the future. Yes. we had a real good year on the field in 2022 and hoping we do as good or better this year. The reason I shared the headline and info from the accompanying article was that anytime we're ranked at the bottom in academics is cause for concern. I guess we'll see what happens down the road. Right now, I'm ready for some football!

The weird thing is that APR is a piss poor metric to say any school is, or isn't, doing well academically. It has nothing to do with grades, or the rigor of classes, or anything along those lines. It's basically "did a kid show up, are they academically ineligible, etc."
Unfortunately, things out of a school or coaches control can affect it. Say... WR Winston Eubanks. Transferred in before 2021, played, retired from football due to concussions, and I don't believe he stayed at PSU after that. So.... he counts against that APR. Stupid. With all the transfers? HArd to keep up with who counts, who doesn't, etc.
It's a very strange metric. We actually had a perfect score in 2019... then 2-3 years later we have this score. LMAO
Y’all don’t make me go Cardale Jones on ya lol
To me, there's a big difference between:
- a bunch of players who are C students in easy classes
- a bunch of students who most take decent classes with A / B averages, but 6 players left the school.
Under the APR, the (1) team looks like Ivy League while (2) looks terrible.
Regardless of the above explanations, this is a clear sign that one of the cornerstones of PENN STATE football is eroding.

Based on what? An APR score?

Based on the original post and hearsay within the program. Unfortunately, it's a growing issue within revenue producing sports. Kids are negotiating NIL deals and spending money. The focus is clearly away from education. I predict the pendulum will swing the other way. When and how far is unknown. I listened to Saban I also listened to Deion Sanders. They make interesting points.
Agree with your opinion. Also, let's not leave out the conference realignment craze. Coast to coast travel is not a good thing for education either. More time away from the classroom will impact everyone, especially athletes in non-revenue generating sports that typically play several games a week . Unfortunately, I don't think the pendulum will swing the other way. It's too far gone and there is too much $$$$ involved. Not only NIL's, but TV revenue generated by the "super conferences".

I disagree, for a few reasons... For one, hearsay is not dependable so I don't rely on it. It's certainly something you can take into account, but I wouldn't base my opinion on it. Second, money being involved doesn't mean academics aren't focused on. If that were true, academics were left a long time ago when the schools started making money. The fact that the players are making money doesn't change anything. You can either hold them accountable in the classroom or not, if not they can transfer or go pro. That's a school decision, not a player decision.
I do!

This proves my point, as we aren't talking about just Penn State but all college football. So seeing that many, many schools are below 60 points on that list while we're up at 117? Then yes... If you think college football as a whole was focused on academics 10-12-20 years ago... yes I think you're kidding yourself. Only 14 teams in the FBS even had a score equal to half of ours on that list! LMAO. We were an exception, not the rule. College football as a whole has not cared about academics for a long, long time. NIL didn't change that.
With all due respect, I don't give a ratz behind about other schools or college football as a whole. My point, going back to my original post, is that I'm concerned with the latest academic measurement which places us lowest in our conference compared to our historical record of being at or near the top of all Division 1 schools. I sure hope Franklin and the powers that be are concerned too and take the necessary steps to continue JoePa's "grand experiment". I want Penn State to win a National Championship and win it the right way - with players that excel in the classroom as well as on the field. Otherwise, the phrase "Penn State Proud" has a hollow meaning.
