So after reading up a little but more about the new laws going in, I still have concerns but don't have nearly as big a problem with it as I did before.

Why? Because it was being reported as "pay the players" and "they would be professional athletes". That's actually not the case.

I'd have a big issue with players getting paid by the schools. That is what was being misrepresented on almost every talkshow... They kept saying "pay for play"

What the California law does is allow student athletes to sign endorsement deals, and have YouTube channels to market themselves. Now obviously there are still a lot of concerns here, first and foremost large boosters just paying off players to go to certain schools by forking over $250,000 for an autograph. That is a legitimate concern, but I don't think it will get THAT bad.

So as long as the schools are just paying for total cost of attendance, so every student athlete has what they need to attend school... I don't think I have an issue with some kid signing a shoe deal. How to police it? That's a much bigger conversation, but I think we are past the point where someone can't make money off of their own likeness.

One thing, maybe the biggest thing I worry about is agents. I hope there is some type of system that keeps these snakes at bay... because it could become a feeding frenzy.

It’ll end up like the transfer rules with some kids having to follow the transfer rule and some won’t.

Yeah, but in today's world I think it's futile to fight against this one. They would still be amateurs, not being "paid" other than scholarships. Anything else they make on their own is allowed.

Perhaps the NCAA could institute some rule that states boosters or anyone associated with the University  are not allowed to have any part in what the kids are making. If it's found that there was a coordinated effort for the University to funnel money into the athletes accounts than the school can be punished... but not the kid.

Until the NCAA permits student-athletes to sign endorsements, etc., these laws are irrelevant.  Any schools that go along with it are still subject to sanctions.

Boosters forking over 250K for an autograph... You bet ur a** that's gonna happen.. This brings the famous Ole money handshake out into the open... What makes college football and basketball different from other NCAA sports is they are the minor leagues for the NBA and NFL..  What needs to happen is the NFL and NBA need to create their own minor leagues... It may be "legal" for kids to accept these deals but the NCAA can state when you sign on with a school that if caught accepting money you will be instantly ineligible to play..  Just like the NFL can suspend players at will the NCAA can set their own rules... That is gonna happen here in my opinion... If not NCAA football and basketball as we know it is finished ...

It's funny because all you people say it happens all the time anyway, and blast Clemson, Alabama, etc. for paying players. Now when it is allowed, you think it will change everything?

Make up your minds LMAO

Those that did will do more so to keep their unfair advantage over those that didn't but now will be able to thanks to this silly legislation.  I think those that say it will change everything (count me in) mean that there are so many unknown ramifications that college football as we know and love it will never be the same,

The NCAA can merely change it's rules so anyone associated with the school is not allowed to pay the athletes. This puts the responsibility on the schools, not the players. So now, if a school is found to be paying a player they can be punished, but the kid is still eligible to play if they want.

I'd rather the adults be the ones punished.

JMO, but I think the slippery slope is when/if the schools and boosters get involved ( as roam mentioned). What is the difference between a business endorsement and a singular or group booster endorsement? Those schools with bigger endorsement sources win every time absolutely crushing the playing field. Maybe I don’t fully understand the nature of the Cal legislation.

I agree lake, and as I said that is one thing that concerns me about this. However, as I also stated I think the time has come to allow individuals to make money from their own bodies.

I remember when Jeremy Bloom from Colorado was deemed ineligible from playing football because he had skiing endorsements. He lost 2 years of his playing career, all because he was also good in another sport where he was a Olympian. That's ridiculous and shouldn't happen.

FYI... Jeremy Bloom's sister was the main character of the movie "Molly's Game". She was the one who ran the poker games at the Viper room in LA. Interesting tidbit.

Roam, I remember a baseball player that played baseball and he got a contact and got paid if I remember right then he went on to play QB for Florida State and played a few years and won a NC. His last name was winkie. How did that happen if he got paid? It’s been a long time so I could be wrong my memory ain’t as good as it once was lol

This scenario bothers me: 3 star Johnny signs at Oklahoma State but has a spectacular year. Johnny  notices how Texas has soooo many players with endorsements so with the Transfer portal and like LeBron, wants to take his talents to Austin. It’s going to make such a headache keeping players.

Also, would Johnny have to sit a year or with special “Justin Fields” like magic be able to play immediately?

Its like a lego land building , instant championship team and takes the fun right out of college football.

You will have boosters buying kids houses, cars, boats, jewelry and cash... Tax laws will come into play... This is not gonna end well...

But according to you this is already done by SEC schools all the time. If that's true wouldn't this level the playing field? LMAO

This is how ridiculous the NCAA is... Weinke played minor league baseball which is allowed because is not in that particular sport. So Weinke was allowed to play football. However, since Bloom had endorsements for skiing, the NCAA said he was making money off of his "image", part of which was his football career at Colorado. Even though they were skiing companies.

Seriously, how stupid is that?

The difference is it is going to be out in the open. At least the Bama's and Clemson's of the world do it on the quiet and it is tamped down a little bit...Auburn paid Cam Newton, USC paid Reggie Bush and on and on...The ole cash handshake was invented and perfected by Paul bear Bryant...That stuff still goes on to this day...You want to really gain an understanding of how crooked this stuff is just look at what's going on with the NCAA basketball scandal with the shoe companies...Look at the programs implicated and named in that...The problem is the NCAA has some real issues and it all has to do with branding...They have taken the TV money and these networks want their money worth so they have hyped up programs to try to make them more attractive for recruiting purposes so you now have 5 or 6 sacred cow basketball programs that end up with 85% of the top recruits...They are trying to create the same thing with football...The NCAA's greed is what is going to take this whole thing down...I can tell you this whole pay to play thing isn't going to work in the NCAA...

"the whole pay for play thing isn't going to work in the NCAA"

That's fine, because I said in my first post this isn't pay for play.
