Either a player is going to give his best or he is not... Either a player is ready mentally or they are not. A coach can only do so much with this, at some point the player needs to take what has been given by the coaching staff and run with it. You are correct, the one thing a coach can do is bench players.
I agree with what y’all are saying but it’s hard gettin these guys up every week that’s why we lost to Minnesota, that’s why Ohio st lost to Purdue, Michigan losing time APP State, upsets like these happen because all teams not just penn st can’t get guys up every game. I don’t know why it happens but it does and it happens to all teams, even the big dawgs.

There are only so many speeches a coach can give, so many practice hours to get a team ready... If you are a player and not up for a game that's on said player... PSU just got outplayed and had to many turnovers against Minnesota, that's why they lost...
So many people look so hard to find meaning in why teams lose... It's easy, sometimes you just have bad games.
It doesn't mean you didn't care, it doesn't mean you weren't prepared, it doesn't mean the other guy wanted it more, it doesn't mean you didn't give 100%, etc. etc. etc. Many times those are just BS rationales journalists and fans come up with. I'm not say those things never happen, but just that sometimes you just had an off day. Sometimes your team just plays bad.
Sometimes you just lose. You played hard. You gave it your all. You tried your best. But for some reason, you were a second off that day. You missed the deep pass you usually hit. You dropped the pass you usually catch. IT HAPPENS. They better you are, the less likely it is to happen... but these players are 18-22 years old, they aren't perfect and they never will be.
I agree Roam. I was just seconding BOB's opinion that players should play with the same intensity whether it's a white out game or not. To me it means giving the same effort, not necessarily the results. My point is that if a kid is not giving the effort he is capable of, it behooves the coach to bench his fanny and go with the next man up.
I agree some but coaches most of the time say I didn’t have them prepared and I believe’em because they are at practice every day and they may have seen something in the game that beat ‘em and it might be something that they didn’t practice or practice enough on. Some days just ain’t your day though and I do believe that. Since players are not prepared don’t mean they didn’t try and they didn’t care because they hate losing as much as we do probably more lol

Oh sure, being prepared is more about game film and strategy... not so much about effort.
I’ve seen a couple of teams quit in my life time and it’s been Miami a few times and just my opinion but Michigan State just don’t look like they want to play in some of the games I’ve watched. I’ve never seen a penn st teams quit even under the sanctions they fought hard. I agree with most of what you said because you’ve played college sports and you have more insight than I do I just go on what i heard coaches say and what I might see. I do remember Clowny Quitting on SC and Spurrier called him out on it.i don’t think it happens much though.

That's why I said "I'm not saying those things never happen, but just that sometimes you just had an off day"
Yeah, some teams do quit sometimes... but it's often much less than we like to believe.
