Are any of you guys into searching for sheds (antlers that have dropped)? I' heading out today to scour my back 40 for moose and deer sheds. It's a good time to get out in the woods and see what trails are being used and where the bedding areas are.
I have found sheds while small game hunting or spring turkey hunting but by then they were pretty well chewed up by squirrels and other rodents. I cant say that I've ever gone out specifically to look for them though. Some guys will pay good money for the larger sheds such as moose and elk.
BT, Moose sheds are much easier to find but the trouble is ya almost gotta go to the swamps and bogs to find them. I don't like wet feet!!
I did find one antler today. It was the right side of a 6pt I've been watching for awhile now. This past fall he easily went over 200lbs live weight. If I knew how, I'd post a pic on here for you to see.
Outsmarted by the site again... Wondered where the "Reply" button went, was patiently waiting for it to come back. Eventually realized the "Hey! You aren't logged in." banner at the bottom was referring to me.
I'm with ya on the wet feet part, unless I have a fishing implement of some type in my hand and sneakers on. Although I do believe I'd slog through the mire for a moose shed once. Snow is still too deep here to find whitetail sheds. Interesting year this year, never got deep enough to make them yard up in the tsuga hummocks but deep enough for them to nibble on red cedar.
They haven't yarded up up here either which is good, that makes the coyotes work for their meals. I have upwards of 12 deer I feed every day. As soon as the last of the snow is gone, they seem to disappear.
That's about the size of the herd I grudgingly "feed" my fruit tree buds to. They get bolder every year, now they stand in my drive way and look in my window at me....or they like watching TV. hmmm
lol They don't even respect my dogs anymore, get to the end of the garden and snort their displeasure for being chased out of the yard.
Lol. I have two cats that I keep out in the barn as mousers and the deer are afraid of them. They high-tail it out everytime a cat gets near them.
A few years back I had two goats and the bucks would suddenly appear everytime the nanny went into heat.
hahaha Wish I had deer cats! The road passes between my house and barn, so I get a lot of drive by cattings. Felt bad one really cold winter and started to leave food out for them. As days passed and things warmed up I noticed the cat(s) either weren't mousing as much or decided it/they really liked the food. One night after work, went out to feed "Spook" ('cause you'd catch movement out of the corner of your eye, but by the time you turned your head, it'd be gone) and there sat a nice fat 'possum waiting for chow.
Never noticed any extra deer activity when the ex's goat's were in heat.
BT, you stayed away from the goats didn't you?
No, I wasn't baaaad. After 34 yrs, she decided she needed to "find" herself. 7 yrs later, she lives down the road about a mile & actually gets along w/ my girlfriend. I'll never understand them, but sometimes... ok, ok, most times, they're nice to have around.
If the sap didn't start running today, it will surely be dripping on my truck tomorrow.
They'e all from the same mold BT. Be careful brother, the ex and girlfriend getting together sounds scary to me.
(nervous chuckle) Yes, very scary.
Sap is running!!
Excellent! May be a little slow this weekend, but should be running steady next week.
How 'bout them pum'kin pushers!
Never heard of such a thing. Ive been busier than a three-peckered goat these last few days. Sap is gonna be running these next few days.
Key West for spring break eh? You lucky dog. Let me know if you need a volunteer to walk point for you.
Basketball? That sport was invented for guys that aren't tough enough to wrestle.
Enjoy your trip and let'shope the blood flows to the correct head.
haha Not much of a crowd guy. Should have checked a little closer before making reservations. Thanks for the offer, taking Lil' Suzie along, she can walk point & I'll watch her tail....& hope I don't get caught looking at scantily clad co-eds, too often.
Exactly! That's why we called 'em pumpkin pushers.
Thanks!
Keep forgetting to ask, are you familiar w/ a publication called Northern Woodlands News? They have a monthly(?) email and quarterly print edition. Think the email is free, magazine is well worth the price. Great photos, covers any and everything woodsy; from animals, insects, hunting, fishing, sugaring, to making chairs from logs w/ your chainsaw. (grand daughter loves hers) I think anyone can contribute articles and I haven't yet seen any type of anti articles. It's the one periodical I get, that I read cover to cover.
Enjoy your fun in the sun in Florida.
Thanks dawg!
I'm not much of a crowd guy either.......hence the move to Maine. I'll have to look into Northern Woodlands News. It sounds interesting.
Yeah, have fun in FLA and remember if you keep your timber limber, you'll be a hard man to beat.
haha I frequently get "How can you live out here in the middle of nowhere?" My reply is "With a smile from ear to ear!"
I believe it's the best mag I have ever read. Even had an article on how they quarried stone back in the day using wood wedges and water to swell them up.
Thanks!
