Yeeeaaaah, that would be the long and short of it.
I was in the sugar shack all weekend but I did manage to keep up to speed on the wrestling tourney. We have 6 1/2 gallons so far but we now have 4 days of single digit daytime temps.
Nice! Guess that'll keep you, family & neighbors in syrup for a while. Do you boil any down to sugar too? A few chilly days gives ya a chance to catch up on your sleep. A little cool down this way too. But I do believe we're done with below 0 temps.
Saw a pair of buzzards this morning, 2 weeks early. Bluebirds are popping in and out of the nesting boxes. Spring is coming!
The only buzzard I've seen is the one in my mirror every morning. Some time ago I boiled down to sugar and cream but haven' done so in years. Actually, I don't do a lot of boiling at all. I have a neighbor that has a nice evaporator system it is unable to go out and collect. I tap his trees and my trees and he and his family boil it down and then we split it. I really don't have the patience for boiling and this weekend was never ending!!
Back to the sugar......i did that a few years back, fed it to my grandkids and caught Holy Hell from Grandma cause they were bouncing off the walls. Never again!!
haha Ya have to stir her up every once in a while, just to make sure she's still got it in 'er. Wind 'em up, turn 'em loose!
Went to a class last night on your arch nemesis, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. You have them up your way yet?
Was down fishing for brookies in the NW corner of Ga. 10 or so years ago and noticed most of the hemlock were toast. I remember telling my son, "Good thing it's a southern bug." Nope, it's not. We have them around here now. And sounds like they just found them in the Adirondacks too. So much for them not able to survive the cold.
No wooly adelgid but the emerald ash borers arrived a few years back.
Have ash borer west of me, adelgids to the south. Thinking the borer will get here 1st.
As soon as there was a 5' hole in the skim ice on the pond had two drake woodies swimming around. Took that as a sign, took the blower off the tractor and put the bucket back on. haha Soon to be snowing!
Sometimes in life we do stupid things and make stupid decisions that have us shaking our head for years. When I bought my tractor I had an offer to by any two attachments at half price. I chose the loader and allowed the salesman to talk me out of a snowblower and picked a mower deck. I mean, who in God's name lives in Maine and would choose a mower over a snow blowing device?
Would you recommend your type of blower over one that runs off my pto?? One of the reasons I opted not to go with a blower was because I didn't want to be backing up constantly to move snow. I have limited motion in my neck due to an old injury.
Hey, I bought into the "move it with the loader" concept too, until I did a couple winters where I ran out of room to put the stuff. Not only do we share interests, we share maladies too! Heading to the VA bone bender tomorrow morning to get my neck & back twisted. Knowing I would eventually build WAY off the road when the time came and knowing I couldn't stand twisting my neck around for any length of time, I opted for a smaller hp tractor (B7800) which has a mid mount PTO too. That drives the front mount blower. Granted, there are times I wish I had the bucket on to do odd jobs, but moving snow is sometimes a daily occurrence here. Only real bitch I have is, Kubota doesn't make a cab for the 7800, so you have to watch the wind blowing snow back into your frozen, smiling, face.
Yeah, I get to enjoy the blowing snow in my face too!! I have the L2501 Kubota with only the rear PTO. Do they offer anything I can attach to the front to blow snow with?? Our nearest dealer is over 65 miles away so it aint like its a trip over the hill.
haha Nothing I enjoy quite as much as snow blowing back in my face at 20 or 30 mph when it's already below zero. Well, maybe a good swift kick in the nuts as almost as fun.
I did a quick search and was surprised to see some Kubota tractors that had the blower mounted on the loader arms, in place of the bucket. They didn't appear to be Kubota blowers (black paint) and I'm not sure how they were driven, whether PTO or hydraulic. Might be worth a call the the "local" dealer to see if they can steer you in one direction or another.
When things "slow down" I might make the trip down there and see what they have to offer. More than likely, I'll forget all about it till next winter. Sap is running good again, could be a banner year.
The dog killed one of my wife's guinea hens yesterday, she's pissed, the whole house is in total anarchy! I'm heading out to find something to do.
Yep, sounds like the approach I use, forget until the snow is falling again. Then cuss myself out for not having remedied the situation last spring.
Smart choice, low profile, keep movin'!What color phase keets does she have? They were always one of my favorites, unfortunately the foxes like them pretty well too.
What in the name of John Wayne's arse is a keet?? Upon further review, the dog got the male guinea. The poor thing still has it tied around its neck. You can be damn sure ive been towing the line all day.
Never mind, i just googled keet. You couldnt just ask what color the hens were?? Ya had to get all technical and drop the term keet on me?
I have no idea what color they are. Im color blind. All i know is they make obnoxious noises and crap up my yard in the summer.
haha Sorry, just chalk it up to Little Johnny's vocabulary builder upper! Yes, they are kinda squawky. Have you ever seen them put on a grasshopper drive? Mine would do that, no clue how something so bird brained could figure out how to form a line in the hay field and together push the hoppers toward the open/mowed lawn. They didn't post watchers, but almost as if on queue, once they got close to the yard, they all broke ranks and started snapping up the hoppers in the yard.
BT, Have you been sniffing the same ceiling paint as Lake? Yeah, its hard to believe anything as dumb as a guinea fowl could organize a grasshopoer drive. Ive been deer hunting with the same group of guys in PA for over 40 years now and we STILL cant get a drive right.
My little herd of deer came thru the winter ok. I have four pregnant doe (im not the father) that frequent my feed pile every day. THE BUCK that ive been watching should be a shooter this fall. He'll go well over 200lbs this year. Up here, weight is what determines a trophy and anything over 200lbs dressed earns you a patch and exclusive bragging rights for a year.
Nah, who needs paint? We have medicinal marijuana down here! Now if I could just get a Rx.
Pretty sure your hunting group does it different than the chickens. Guineas do the drive, then use their peckers to kill their dinner.
Snow melted pretty well over night, I can see grass again. My annoying, garden eating herd is happily munching in the hay field....rain coming later. 200 lb dressed would make most any hunter happy.
We can buy the cannabis cream over the counter up here, you just have to know which counter to go to.
I suppose the length and width of one's pecker determines whether its a lethal weapon or not.
lol Correct! Length and width AND knowing how to use it does the trick!
And knowing WHEN to use it!!
Whenever you can!!!!
You're a sick man BT. I just wanted to get that out there before you accused me of being the same! Lol
Thanks T! Believe it or not, that's not the 1st time I've been told that.
I knew you were somewhat đemented when you asked me what color my wife's keets were!!
