Is the sap starting to flow down there?  Looking at the extended forecast, we're still two weeks away up here.

I’m confused, are you talking about maple trees or pipe?

Believe you are correct. Had to pull the trigger twice on the post below to get it to go.

When i was younger i use to help my Grandfather boil the sap into syrup.  That was a lot of work for such a small amount.  He use to also make a maple cream that we'd put on toast.  Man, was that ever good.  Ive since moved away and and my grandfather passed away a few years back but the memories are still fond and etched in my mind.  Good times

Well, that snow certainly put a damper on that one peeper I heard the other night.

I had a Robin sighting the other day. Last week's storm missed us and we had perfect weather for tapping sap. This week's storm is supposed to dump up to 2' of the white stuff on us. I've been trying to get ahead of the storm.

How was your trip to Florida?

Lol.  Yeah, the plastic tube jungle has made its way up here too. I still go the old fashioned way of tap and bucket but I don't get near the volume that the retailers get. I have modernized somewhat in that I have a sled and a wagon that I put a 100 gallon tank on and empty the buckets into as I make my rounds. I have a pretty good sugar bush up here and I cleared access roads thru it so I can get to all the trees.  Being out in the woods is what it' all about in my opinion.

Hey Hemlock!

Nice to see you took a break from sugaring. As for vacation, I may not ever leave the farm again. haha It was a tragic comedy that started with both Little Suzie and I getting searched on the way through airport security and ended w/ coming home to find my credit card hacked (at least I got home before they shut it off) and next day the lake effect snow & wind after the last Nor'easter, topping one of my back yard white pines about 3/5 of the way up. Missed the house and Jeep, but took out the power lines. (23" diameter on the butt end, too bad it wasn't straight) I love playing pick up sticky, sticks in the cold!!!

Glad I have scratched Key West off the bucket list. Figured it would be crowded, but wasn't planning on there being two HUGE cruise ships to add to the chaos.

Further entrenched in my mind, that some articles of clothing should come with weight and/or age restriction, if he/she wants to wear it in public. (some things can never be unseen)

Re: Bill & the blue tube wonderland. I walked a 10 acre sugarbush w/ a gentleman last fall. He had every sizable sugar and red maple tubed up to the point that it looked like a blue spider web. You couldn't walk 50' without going over or under tube. He was wanting to know if I might have a list of "good" loggers that could take out the non-sugar producing trees. I suggested he'd have to take down the tubing so they could fell trees and run a skidder to forward the logs. He looked at me with a straight face and said it would be too much work for him & the logger would have to work around the tubes. Needless to say I didn't leave him with a list of loggers.

I too was once body searched by airport security.  After 4 times in line she got wise to me and sent me on my way.  No fashion police in KW eh?? I'll keep that in mind.

My advice would be to stay on the farm, the world ai t ready for old farts like us.

Are you a forest consultant by trade??

lol How come I don't get female TSA agents to search me?!?

I'm pretty sure I'd have gotten through security just fine, if I hadn't chuckled when they grabbed Sue. At that point, instant karma reared it's ugly head in the form of " Is this YOUR bag sir?"

No sir. I retired a few years back, when I decided going to work wasn't fun anymore. Some of my "free" time is volunteering as a NY Master Forest Owner. It's a program through Cornell, Turkey Federation, Grouse Coverts, etc. in which I'll assist forest owners with woodlot management. I can talk them through tree ID, wildlife habit improvement, timber production, silviculture practices and how to sign up for federal grant $ for timber stand improvement.  haha Basically, I give them information that they could easily find on their computers, but I have a face.

How'd ya make out with snow?

haha Any of the last 3 Nor'easters, you're choice. Turkeys tend to come and go around here, depends a lot on how much snow we get and how hungry the coyotes are. Fairly odd year this round, as the snow has been melting in between most of the storms. Hasn't stressed the birds or deer.

Come on down and shoot all the deer you want! #5 Pope & Young buck in the county came off the my back bean field.  lol No, not me. One of my guys from work's kid got it his first year hunting. Not much room to move up from that one, but all kinds of "not big enough" after.

Damn, coulda sworn I looked here this morning. Sorry I missed it.  Bummer about your barometer head, I usually end up shooting myself in the foot.

How many inches did you get? I mean using a standard ruler, not the one you use to impress the ladies.

26".............of snow.  As for the other comment, my granddaddy always said "it only needs to be long enough to get a thumb and forefinger her on it to pee". I'm sticking with that.  Besides, I can touch my eyebrows with my tongue.

Winter freakin' wonderland! Only got about 14" here from the wrap around.

haha Reminds me of the time the ex and kids and friends were at the Philly zoo watching the giraffes. Zoo folks put their hay up on top of a, for lack of better explanation, tall lamp post. One giraffe ambles over, sticks out it's tongue, wraps it around a loaf of hay and drags it back into it's mouth. After the ex got her mouth working again, she exclaimed in a rather loud voice, "Did you see the tongue on that thing?!?" Everyone in earshot chuckled.

That reminds me of an incident that occurred at a theme park a few years back. It was one of those places where the animals roam free and you drive your vehicle around and observe them. Apparently an amorous giraffe had his eye on a compact car and tried to mount it!

They renamed the place "giraffedic" park.

Thank you, I'm here all week
