Mr Lake, Im going to get the jump on you this week and post my predictions first:

125: Hildebrant vs Heinselman  Hildy gets us started off on the right foot with a decision

PSU 3- OSU 0

131:   RBY is rested and back on his home mat.  I'm going with a MD over Koontz

PSU 7  OSU 0

141: I smell a TF in the works.  Lee is frustrated after Friday's match and D'Emilio has no answers to Lee

PSU 12 OSU 0

149: Beau is getting closer but Sasso has too much in his arsenal

PSU 12 OSU 3

157: TB over Hubbard in a close one

PSU 15 OSU 3

165:  BB keeps it close against Kharchla but he'll once again come up short

PSU 15 OSU 6

174: Cael lit a fire under some butts this week.  CS decision over Ethan Smith

PSU 18 OSU 6

184: Brooks vs Romero...good matchup on paper but we wrestle on mats, not paper.  Romero drops in the rankings

PSU 21 OSU 6

197:  Will Hoffman squeal like Warner?? MD here

PSU 25 OSU 6

HVW:  Kerk is pissed after last week.  He needs to score big points to prove he's a viable 2 or 3 seed option.  Another MD

PSU 29 OSU 6

Thoughts??

PS...man its great to be able to sleep in my own bed for a change!!!!

This will be a non match after Iowa and the lesser Michigan match.  I would not be surprised if one or two guys get a rest.  Kirk needs to wrestle, the mid weights need to win something to improve seeding.  Hildebrant probably needs to wrestle.  I expect to give up more than 6 because of rests.

You might be on to something but I kind of figured Coach Cael would want to stuff the Buckeyes, especially after all the trash talk they spewed the last time they came to HV.  I figured he sit a few for the Nebraska meet and then have a few sit out for Rider on the 20th.  I figure RBY, Nicky Lee, Berge, and maybe Gardner will all wrestle their last match at home against Rider.

But you're absolutely right, Friday night will be a non-match.  Actually, the last three are non-matches.

Good chatting with ya bud

I think you are spot on but feel compelled to make a few minor disagreements as follows:

157: Barraclaugh loses to Hubbard...still working on his cofidence

165: I don't think Berge has his lungs and is not quite in wrestling shape. Karchla by a major. Berge will look much different in March

184: Brooks major over Romero...he's pissed he left points on the mat and that will change.

Underlion...I think Cael goes full throttle for a couple of reasons. At this point matches and wins are important for Big10 and more importantly, National seedings. The next and this is just my opinion, OSU is putting together a killer recruiting year. Cael knows he lost a few to Ryan but needs to plug this up before it becomes a thing.

You are probably right, I'm just an armchair Heavyweight 😎

I guess there are competing priorities:

  • Dual win...not in doubt
  • Seedings for Nationals helpful but how big a deal?
  • B10 TOURNEY ... Not a big deal
  • Nationals
  • Recruiting

Not easy being the lead dog but the view is better.

Cael will balance it, that is why he is or will be the GOAT.  Or GOTE, greatest of this era.

Drago to Rocky
”I will break you”. ( in my imitation of Cael doing an imitation of Drago in his best imitation of a Russian accent ).

125 Hildebrant is boring but what an upgrade.  Nice ride out.

131 RBY has developed into a rider and turner.  At first he was just a takedown artist.  PIN

141 Lee, what is there to say, a semi Rutherford.

149 BB, will get there, lots of close matches.  Needs to escape better.  Need some NCAA points here.  Not the toughest weight class.

157 A win in OT, maybe will build some confidence.  A challenging weight for us, this is the spot we may have open at NCAA's?

@underlion  Yeah, I'm not convinced we'll send anyone from 157 to the NCAA's. Dean had a lapse that darn near cost him the match.

165 Berge got the rest and Edsel gets the win.  A loss except they rested their starter.

174 CS got the rest, Smith made Manville look soft and slow.  He gave up shots pretty EZ.

184 Brooks is relatively boring for as good as he is,  not  Bo.  But no fun being Rocky after getting thru the first period.  Ref called that fall quickly.  Good English called quickly vs quick fall?

197 No rest for Dean, he needs to be more dominant.  Always close, needs work on finishing takedowns.  Maybe Dean just wears most wrestlers out.

HWT Big match, Kirk needs to practice staying out of heavyweight positions.  Speed positions.  Ranked 5 and leaving B10's it would be good to be 2 or 3.  Needs a right leg atack?  Opponents are defending against the left that he likes.  That straight on double is nice but it is where a big guy wears you down if you don't get it quick.  Solid major.

Score was pretty much what Kid said, even though a few guys were 'rested'.

Why does Nebraska have a mat with 8 rolls (7 taped seams).  A 3 roll seems so much better.  Easier to store?

We didn't  wear the green and red ankle bands but NE UM is.  Is that decided by the ref?  Seems dumb for a dual.  It makes sense that OSU and NE would just be red, no ankle bands required.

Observations from last night's OSU match:

You were right Underlion, Cael did rest a few of his starters, Berge and Starocci. So did Ryan and he seemed indifferent like the match didn't matter to him. What about Mason Manville? He looked pudgy and way out of shape. He was a stud coming out of high school though it was mostly Greco. With those kind of credentials, I wonder how he couldn't make a serious run at 165, his best wrestling weight. Dean is a stud  but wrestles to the level of his competion. As long as he wins I guess bur very frustrating. Brooks got a quick pin slap on Rocky Jordan, his blades did not appear flat on the mat..... but all the same because the mat is like a cylinder and were virtually flat  😊.

I didn't want to be mean but Manville does not look like a wrestler, 'pudgy/soft' is a nice description.  I always thought Vincenzo looked soft for a wrestler but he got results.  Imagine Vincenzo ripped.

I always wanted to know what Mark Hall really weighed, it seemed he was wrestling a weight class up, now he is kind of ripped...muscle weighs more.

Dean wrestles like a Dean or a Cornell wrestler, not a Cael prototype.  But if he wins....  He does seem to wear the competition down.  Caffee, who he lost to, is dangerous but tends to have lower endurance than a lot of his completion,  Dean has more endurance or heart late.

Just my uninformed perception.

IMO, Dean wrestles not to lose.  He's not what we refer to as a "chain wrestler".  Nick Lee is. Spencer Lee is. Bo wasnt, but Nolf and Zain both were.  Manville did look a bit soft to me as well, but who am I to say...I was sitting in my lazy boy with a bag of chips and a honey brown in my hand watching the action.  Mace was/is one heck of a greco-roman wrestler.

I will almost guarantee that Casey was in Beau's ear about giving up a take down with six seconds left in the match. Cael will be a bit more diplomatic, and Beau knows he shouldnt have given that one up.  PSU wrestlers score take downs with 6 seconds left, we dont give them up.  That was a tough lesson to learn.

Getting back to wrestling styles.  There was a HS team that was famous for working to the edge of the mat before they took their shots.  The reasoning behind it was if they missed, they were close to being out of bounds.  A couple of guys from that school won a state title using that strategy.  I wont name names cause I dont want to offend anyone, they were wrestling just as they were coached to do AND its perfectly legal.  It just wasnt my style of wrestling.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful to Manville. I thought I heard he is there on a ROTC scholarship so he can concentrate on Greco in the RTC with folk style a side thing. I really don’t know, only surmising. Great insight on Cael coaching and why Penn state wrestlers are successful on and off the matt.

My son’s middle school team has mats like that. I had never seen them before and didn’t realize they were being used by Nebraska. They are much lighter an easier to store than the regular ones. Probably more affordable too. I wouldn’t think Nebraska would have any issues with money or storage space like a middle school would?

i read now that Starocci was out due to his hand being injured during his match with Kemerer. I wonder if he will go tonight against Nebraska's Labriola. Even more so, I hope he heals up in time for March, he'll need everyghing he's got to assurdly go against Kemerer again.

@lakerie There are some rumors out there that it is a wrist injury and he may be out until the B1G tournament. I’m hoping it’s minor and the rest is precautionary.
