A local H.S. team 25 miles from me packs it in, cancelled the last 2 games.  Too many injuries and played last week with just 17 players.  That's not the only problem. Lack of participation,  very low rosters over the past 3 years. They did the right thing for safety reasons of the kids. I was Talking to a guy about this who once coached.  Never saw anything like it. I can name 4 other teams following the same patterns.  Again, Some of these teams ran 40-50 kids onto the field just 10 years ago.  Even the fans and ticket sales are down.

I was told that I was a Negative Nelly awhile back. Yeah.....ok. Tell me another one. The trend is continuing. Sad, but true.  I don't have anything more to say right now.

Focused on indoor activities, video games.  It gets hot and cold outside.  And mommies don't want there little boys getting hurt.  I'm going to guess this problem exists more at middle class and upper middle class schools?

It's happening in private and public school systems.  Yes, I agree with you.  Video games are part of the problem,  electronic devices,  social media.  Do you know how many hours are spent checking their Facebook page? It's disgusting. One of the many reasons I don't have social media pages.

Exactly the way I see it! We just ain’t as tough as we once was brother it’s that simple. I heard nationwide football is declining but around here where I live it’s all good.

If that was true, the other sports wouldn't be doing well which they are. Soccer is being played in record numbers in America, Little League is still huge among 11 and under while Basketball is booming.

The kids who are gravitating towards video games and playing inside exclusively not the athletes that typically went into sports.

The focus on concussions is a part of the decline. Joints can be surgically repaired and even replaced. Not so with the brain. Football is slowly becoming an activity for the underclass and the uneducated.

The NFL and the NCAA are frantic. Participation data has those that reap financial rewards looking for options to reverse the trend.

Soccer looks to be a better sport, more exercise, less impact but it is only for a certain size of kid.

Besides its a socialist/communist sport 😳

Study the brain data for repetitive heading of the ball and I'd suggest that they limit heading to the scoring zone.

Our society is getting softer, so while I agree that the athletes are shifting I also suspect a decline, no data, just a hypothesis.

I see lacrosse growing also but I still perceive the status for the cheerleaders is football skill players. 😊  What are the fall sports that compete with football in HS?

I believe head injuries got on the rise is because some of the punk players wanted to kill somebody when they tackled. Play the game right and the head injuries will go way down. When dealing with sports you can always get hurt or killed. I’m a truck driver and it’s always possible I won’t make it home but I do all I can do to make it a great safe day I drive the speed limit and I keep good distance from other trucks and cars and I have 2 million miles without an accident. If I drove wreck less there’s a good chance my driving record wouldn’t be as good. Football is the same way play the game safely without trying to kill people and the injuries will go down.

I don't know, Roam.  I still have a gut feeling that there is a contemporary attack on football, not only because of the concussion and violence issues, but more importantly, militant feminists!  It's interesting to note that the other sports you cite, i.e. soccer, LL baseball and basketball all are amenable to female participation, be it with female teams or females on male teams (LL baseball).  Why, the NBA even has a considerable number of  female assistant coaches!  I really believe that football comes under attack because it is one of the few remaining vestiges of male oriented organizations that have survived feminist attack!  How's that for conspiracy theory?

Yes he is and the NFL players don’t see it. The owners do but the players don’t unless they just don’t want to admit it?

Southern,  that is so true.  Right on the money! Rather than just tackling with the taught  fundamentals of football , they rather want to kill the person. Just make a clean tackle,  get off the ground.

I didn't say there wasn't an attack on football, I just rebutted the argument that kids were playing less in general and becoming more inactive.

I would agree with you that many kids are picking other sports based on the negative injury news about football right now
