RBY is on the Matt this dude is quick
RBY wins it baby
@southern-psu-fan IMO its shouldn't have went to OT. i thought the stalling was BS
Lee wins 2-0 baby
O’Conner from NCAR is one tough dude I’m glad he won
Man, that Stanford kid Griffith is tough how did they get his ranking so off comes in #8 seed?
Starocci wins baby 3-0 lol
Brooks wins 4-0 baby
And that's a wrap!!! Great night for the Blue and white
This was by far the best condition (shape) I have seen Penn State in in a long time! You could just see at the end of every match how much more gas they had left in the tank vs their opponents. I thought this was very obvious with Starocci's bout. I know they have had a lot studs over the past years, but these guys tonight looked very crisp for all three periods. They need to give their Strength and Conditioning coach a little Bonus $$$ for this performance!
How is the team champion determined in the the tournament; Iowa has one individual champion and Penn state has four; how does Iowa win overall team?
@psu61 I’ve always thought that winning the NC for each weight should reward more team scoring points. I don’t know all the rules for scoring through the rounds I know making it to the finals scores good I just wish they gave the winners in the finals more points. 4 more NC’s baby I’ll take it
@southern-psu-fan: Hope this helps. It took me a while to figure it out and I wrestled!!!
PLACEMENT POINTS
1st place: 16 points
2nd place: 12 points
3rd place: 10 points
4th place: 9 points
5th place: 7 points
6th place: 6 points
7th place: 4 points
8th place: 3 points
This is pretty self-explanatory -- you get points based on where you finish. Tournament scores tend to include the minimum number of points that have already been obtained at the time the score is listed. For instance, if a wrestler has advanced to the finals, his team has already been awarded 12 points in their team score because even if he loses the championship match, he would still finish second and get the 12 points. The winning wrestler is simply given the additional points after winning (in this case, 4 more points to the overall team score).
ADVANCEMENT POINTS
Each advancement in championship bracket: 1 point
Each advancement in consolation bracket: 0.5 point
Bye followed by win in championship bracket: 1 point
Bye followed by win in consolation bracket: 0.5 point
This is also pretty self-explanatory -- win a match in the championship half of the bracket, get a point. Win a match in the consolation half of the bracket, get half a point. If you receive a bye, you do not automatically get a point (or half-point) for that "match" -- you must win your following match.
BONUS POINTS
Each fall, forfeit, default, disqualification: 2 points
Each tech fall (w/ near fall points): 1.5 points
Each tech fall (w/o near fall points): 1 point
Each major decision: 1 point
This is why Desanto was so important to Iowa's title. Not to take anything away from the other guys that pretty much wrestled to chalk but in my opinion Desanto wrestled in a very tough division and had he lost in the 2nd round, we might be bringing the team championship back to Happy Valley. Beating Kemerer and Eireman in the title match was big but it only netted us 8 more team points. Austin scored quite a few bonus points in addition to his 10 points for third plus all his advancement points. In my opinion, he was the lynch-pin in all of this. I dont really care for his antics, but I got to give him props. He wrestled a heck of a tournament.
Marinelli?? I figured he'd repeat past history and stumble under the spotlight. He a nice guy, and a great wrestler; but he lets all the added pressure of wrestling for Iowa get to him. We take wrestling seriously in PA but in Iowa, its an obsession. Kind of unhealthy environment to wrestle in if you ask me but that's always been the Brand's style of coaching.
@thepakid. Pakid I thought the kid from NCAR was a pit bull out there that was one tough dude strong as an ox but in the finals Penn St was the dominator.
@southern-psu-fan: He and his brother are both PA wrestlers. I was kind of hoping they'd go to PSU but I guess you cant have them all!!! He lost a tough one. As much as I wanted Brooks to win, seeing a guy lose in the championship match because of a stalling call late in the 3rd period is tough to see.
But yes sir, you're right. He certainly is a pit bull.

Man you are 100% on the money! They put their foot on the gas and never left off! I was extremely impressed with the hustle and energy in every match!
th
@thepakid Curios as to what you thought of the stalling calls on RBY? I wrestled in high school but never at the collegiate level. I thought they were BS but then again like I said I never wrestled at your level so I was curious as to what you thought.
@navylion: I thought it was BS too. I watched the video a few times and I just didnt see it. RB was bringing the action Fix the entire match. The only time he was stepping back was when he'd try to change levels or get a better angle to take a shot. The refs got to give a guy some latitude to try to set up his shots and keep the action going. RB has a quick go around move that Fix was had taken away from him in the 2nd and 3rd periods. RB was just trying to adjust to Fix's adjustment and got called for it. I dont know what they saw that I didnt see but the refs gotta be consistent. Kinda like in baseball, if the ump is calling a pitch three inches off the plate a strike then he's gotta call every one like that for all 9 innings.
You guys are spot on, our boys were in MUCH better shape then the competition.
Also, RB caught Fix trying a gramby roll and should have gotten 2 near fall points for that. I was surprised Cael didnt throw the brick on that one.
@thepakid yep, I thought he should have gotten back points too. I was in the bedroom yelling at the TV and my 4 year old granddaughter came in and asked me if I was alright!! LOL!!
@navylion: The only thing I can figure is CS didnt want Fix to catch his breath while the refs reviewed the call. RB had ridden him for most of the 2nd period and that takes a toll on a guy after a bit. Awarding two stalling points in less than 20 seconds is terrible no matter who they're called on. NCAA needs to look into that.
Everything you guys just said and more. I traveled to Arizona with a few old wrestlers to enjoy every single match broadcast by ESPN. I was pissed the way they had to show the Ms State basketball game and at the last minute swithched coverage to ESPN News and did not announce the switch back when the bb game finished. Anyway, a few thoughts from Erie Pa:
Carter Starocci is an Erie Cathedral Prep grad and do happy for him. Don't let future expectations to get to you or success make change you from the great kid you are.
David Carr might be from Ohio but has strong family ties in Erie. His family is one of the first families of college wrestling. I wrestled on a traveling team with Fletcher, Joe and Jimmy and they are just pure class. David's father Nate was younger than us but met him while visiting when he was an asst. coach at WVU. GREAT guy and increadibly humble. I'm just glad he chose to go to Iowa State instead of Ohio State.
I liked Stanford's all black nameless singlets. I noticed it immediately before the announcers spoke of it. It screamed in its meaning. Great for Grifffin, what a humble, intelligent kid. I hope he finds a good wrestling home if Stanford stands by its decision.
It's on the Iowa coaching as much as PSU coaching why Eierman and Kemmer lost to our guys. They simply could not make the adjustments like Cael and company did on the big stage.
Is Ferrari that big of jerk? I hope not. Is DeSanto off his meds? He was banned for an "incident" banning him from the medal stands and national champ celebrations. Should he be kicked out Iowa?
I understand Verkleeren is in the transfer portal and Lock Haven in his future. Good for him, a great guy who has been through adversity and deserves his time on the mat.
Get healthy Berge, its been a tough few years with injuries.
Congratulations to the PSU wrestlers, coaches and Penn State wrestling nation of a super tournament. Under challenging circumstances they over performed. It's almost like they won a national championship and although Iowa will once again be favorites next year, Penn State will be coming hard. Kid, you better be in Detroit next year!! Would love to exchange grandpa stories over a few beers.
