I'd like to say the defense was OK even good. They scored a TD and put us in FG position on the second INT. Give the D 10 points. By my accounting they accounted for 10 points just like our offense. Now lets be more honest, the W offense is average at best. I'm guessing they dropped 5 balls, numerous penalties... TOP was equal and our defense folded on the last drive. FOLDED even after Wisconsin was penalized and backed themselves up to the 10? Defensive line didn't get much pressure but most passes were quick, one sack by Rojas. Lets not get to excited about the defense.
Offense? If you want to call it that was offensive. 12 first downs total. Four or five in the second half. It seemed to those watching that we had identified a RB by then. Peoples had 67 of the teams 114 rushing yards and averaged 4.8 per carry with a long of 9. Nobody else was close. Our wonderful TE Room had 36 yards, 4 catches by Brahmer. Rocco did not find another TE all game. Sowell had 70 yards and I think he caught everything catchable. Had he turned up field and gotten the first down at the end of the third the game might have been different. Instead he got smashed 18" short. We faked we were going for it, ran out the quarter, talked about it, faked we were going for it, wasted a TO and punted. The last play of the third and the 1st play of the 4th may have been the turning point. Rocco 12/29 for 114 yards, 3.9 yard average. Had 4-5 knocked down, underthrew 2-3 open receivers long, probably 10 points worth? 31.2 QB Rating is pretty bad. Not sure he was seeing open receivers, locked in? He choked, the 'most experienced QB in the BCS'. Maybe not good experience? Different environment and it can get worse.
Preseason I think I predicted 3 +/- 1 loss. After today I'd take the over. Looks like a rebuilding year not an Indiana year. So be it, we were scrambling to get a coach and assemble a team.
Rocco isn’t the reason we lost the coaching staff is. James Peoples was averaging almost 5 yards a carry and when we needed to run the ball and grind the game down he was on the bench but regardless of that Rocco Stepped up in crunch time and hit 87 in the hands with the football and he can’t make the catch, he choked plain and simple. But the bottom line is Jim Knowles Jr can’t get the defense to put the game away in crunch time and let them score to beat us. Penn St prides itself on defense and an average QB at best they let drive the ball down our throats to get the winning TD. Rocco didn’t have a good game but he did step up when the game was on the line and we didn’t catch the ball.
We also need a punter! Stop the RB by committee shit and keep People’s in the game!
#4 had 2 balls that he should’ve caught one would’ve put the game away and the other earlier hit him in the chest both passes together would’ve been 70 more yards passing and the 87 drop would’ve added 50 yards for the win, we just can’t catch the dang football unless it’s a perfect pass. @underlion I’m a believer in what I see and #4 or #87 ain’t who you want the ball thrown to when the games are on the line. They’re good unless there’s pressure and they both struggled. To win games in crunch time you have to make a play stepping your game up. You either make a play or you don’t there’s nothing tricky about it. Had Peoples got the snaps that dude would’ve wore the Wisconsin defense down and would’ve had over a 100 yards rushing. It’s my opinion he would’ve he was playing and running hard, it’s not even debatable who the best RB is.
I get that Rap is not a great hands guy. He is supposed to be the best blocker. I didn't even recognize he was playing. I thought he was out for the game. Eskildson was open on two occasions and was underthrown allowing the DB to break up the pass. You can say he is expected to come down with contested balls but if the team colors were switched I'd have expected a PSU DB to break that pass up. Rocco threw at least 3 balls short on receivers that were very open long and I'm guessing they were thrown 5 yards short. That may be an adjustment to faster competition, maybe wind? I noted that he was praised a week ago for hitting a receiver over the middle that was between 3 defensive guys and he snuck it in. It worked against lesser teams but he has to be better. He did not find his open receivers, he did not find his check downs to open RB's when they were right in front of him. He had a poor day IMO. I can not blame the offensive line. I get we are wo KH but we knew that for 7 days. NW played IU tough after a horrid start. Solid, not anything impressive. After todays performances NW has to be favored. I hope we have decided on a RB after today and we need another receiver to catch the ball. I do suspect that Peoples has the most potential and he should be getting the most carries. That was a horrid offensive performance and I expect there is lots of blame to go around.
IMO, MC tooks his eggs from the old basket and thought it was gonna work in the BIG; not happening. Both lines are gonna get ate up as the season progresses, and Mouser isn't a OC for the BIG, imo; that simple game plan beats other teams when you can physically beat them with ease, otherwise you are toast.
- The first three games were good indicators if you looked past the score itself, and simply observed the play.
- If you don't know who the RB 1 is by the 1-2 game, seems to me, you don't know what you have or you just don't have much.
- Another loss or two, bench The Roc, and play the young guy for the future.
- O and D lines have simply got to get bigger and stronger; yeah, thats another 3-4 years, lol.
- There is nothing big nasty about this team, imo.
I would have to disagree with Southern, Rocco was a lot of the problem Saturday. Not all the problem but a lot of it. I have heard some people say he is one of the most experienced QB’s in college football, but I didn’t see that yesterday. I’d be willing to give Manske a shot he’s supposedly the next in line, but I’m afraid MC is loyal to Rocco kinda like Jimmy and Allar. And to what Joe said above, I saw on another message board where someone thought that Saturday was a Big 12 vs Big 10 game. And that’s what it looked like. I think Rocco is too short to throw over some of these tall defensive linemen, he definitely needs to drop back or roll out.
And in the post game news conf. MC said he thought Rocco had a pretty good game, I’m not sure what he was looking at but even with all the mistakes the wisky QB made he outplayed Rocco big time. The defense played pretty good all night but had the same issues as before giving up big yardage at bad times and not able to close out the game. But they were on the field a lot. 7 punts against a not so good wisky team? SMH.
When you can run the ball you can control the clock and game and we could do that with Peoples on the field the dude was gettin 4.8 yards a pop and the OC kept doing the RB by committee crap and it kept the offense from gettin any kind of rhythm and consistency. Rocco didn’t have his best day but his numbers are better if we had TE’s and WR’s that would go up and get the ball. It’s like they jump to early or just don’t go after the ball we were 0-4 that I can remember when we needed a play.

I like MC, given the circumstances he gets some grace. We are always overly 'hopeful'. I don't think we have an identity, how could we? All he has at this point is 'work hard, out hustle, discipline, maturity'. We lost a recruiting class and are a combination of PSU players or players JF didn't want and IS players. We are not used to not having a running back room...wow. If Peoples went to OSU he must have had potential at some point. I would feel better if these guys were students... But after 4 'games' we are not sure we have a RB1 and our WR1 is out for the important part of the season, 3 or more of the 9 B10 games. We were searching for WR3 and now we are hoping to find WR2?
Rocco was out of sorts for some reason, he interviews well, talks the talk...but he made many poor decisions and executions. It was rare he found an open RB or TE and only completed passes to one wide out. The talk was that he needed to step up w/o KH. I think he had a head problem. He knows it and I expect MC knows it no matter what his post game says. You do not throw team under the bus in the post game.
I woke up this morning hoping it was a bad dream... NOT. I woke up asking why did our best receiver get hurt in a game that shouldn't have been a game and maybe wasn't when he got hurt. I didn't expect it to be an easy game until I was spoiled by 17-0.
And to top it off every TV Time Out was a political add telling me how people are going to fix something when I know they will deficit spend and force the fed to print $. So we have dollar devaluation and inflation. Not a dream either

That game yesterday on defense was like the Indiana game last year we have the lead and have their offense deep inside their own territory and we can’t stop ‘em in crunch time. When games are on the line your studs need to step up and we didn’t get it done on offense or defense and it beat us. After watching Joe Paterno for over 35 years I seen and learned what had to be done on winning close games in crunch time maybe that’s why it’s so damn easy for me too see it dang show ain’t nothing tricky. Take this loss out on NW and get the win we still have a chance and as long as you have a chance that’s a good thing.
You are right Southern, when I watched Indiana last year the real attribute was that they were 95% when a play needed made. It was statistically impossible what those receivers did. We were the opposite yesterday.
You used the word 'Rhythm' I think MC used the word 'Flow' but we all felt it and we didn't have it.
While I say TOP was equal the other reality is that in that concentrated last quarter or 8 minutes our defense was on the field a lot. They may have been tired. 14 points by W in 4 minutes!
Watch the last 5 minutes especially the last 30 seconds. Studs step it up and find a way to win.
When Wisc. had a 3rd & 15 near the end of the game, I said "we're Fucked". I don't know if this can be fixed.
I get it with Lynn being back at PS being a former player and all but his defense’s at USC and UCLA I think it was, we’re not impressive. They got better as time went on I think so I guess he will need a little time to get it figured out here. I don’t know why whenever we get the opponent into 3rd and long at a clutch time we always seem to fold and give it up. Seems like that always happens. Rojas is a good player but he’s No POZ. Wish we had more of the PoZ, Lee, Bowman players out there. Rojas is close but he had a bad missed tackle Saturday and wisky capitalized. I think it’s just going to take a few years for MC to get things going in the right direction here, Question is how much time do they give him. This is a Hungry fan base that wants to get over the hump and tired of the welp maybe next year will be the year.
The biggest challenge today for the team is to shake this loss off and don’t carry it to NW Friday night. I believe the coaches will watch the film and see #1 needed to be in the game as the clear #1 RB and that will be fixed Friday night. We didn’t play good but we didn’t need to for us to win that game against Wisconsin what beat us is nobody on offense or defense stepped up in crunch time to get the win. Last year we tried to follow the Michigan and Ohio State blueprint to win the National Championship and failed miserably. This year we’re trying to follow the Indiana blueprint and are once again on the verge of failing miserably !! Maybe we should just get back to being Penn State and stop trying to mimic other programs? We made a lot of terrible personnel decisions in the offseason and are now stuck with middle of the pack Big 12 talent or alleged “hidden gems” and no depth at critical positions. The talent we left walk when Campbell was hired is sickening.

QB had a terrible game, pretty much how I see it. All the other things mentioned are red herrings, if Becth even has an average game we win by 17.
He was bad in the 1st half, and terrible in the 2nd. I wouldn't say it"s the Big Ten nonsense though, he played Iowa (arguably the best defense in Big Ten) 3 years in a row and won.
Hopefully he gets better. I think he will, but time will tell. As for the defense, they played well for 3.5 quarters and looked like the ran out of gas. An offense constantly giving the ball back to the other team will do that.
