During warm ups at the Blue & White game I saw players wearing ear buds. Obviously they were listening to music. Didn’t like what I saw. How can a group play like a team if each individual is literally dancing to the beat of a different drummer?  Music to the players ears should the the grunt and groans their opponents make after they knock their butts to the turf.

I am an old school guy so I do accept I live by outdated standards.

I'm with you on this one. To me, that's lack of oversight and discipline.

You two clowns obviously know nothing about today’s youth, plus, it was a practice game.  Lmao. What’s the difference between listening to their own music or having music screaming out of speakers during practice which has been done for many years. I guess the whole team and staff was undisciplined when they brought guests on the field too?  The BW game is nothing more than a carnival. Earbuds permitted.

When the warriors hit the beach at Normandy were they wearing ear buds?

Did the guys who made PSU “Linebacker U” wear earbuds when they played?

What music was Einstein listening to when he came up with the Theory of Relativity?

Did Joe let his team listen to music during warmups before PSU beat Miami for the National Championship?

For those of you that say it was only the Blue & White game think it would be okay for a real game?

For you music guys, would it be okay if the athlete listened to violent anti white rap?

Ah, the stadium rocking after the fumble recovery that led to the defeat of Ohio State was music to my ears!

LMAO, comparing D day and World War II to a spring practice game. I mean, I've heard some crazy comparisons before but...

Seriously, step away from the computer, breath, relax, go watch film of past BW games....most of the kids on the sideline aren't paying attention to the game BECAUSE IT WAS A PLAY GAME.  And what does "violent anti white rap" matter?????

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it.

I'm as old school as the next guy, but times change. When you get around to coaching a college team Sky, Forum Tighten, you can impose your own archaic standards for your players....see what kind of team you field.

All aspects of preparation should be taken seriously but for sure, the B&W game needs more focus. Maybe this be cool and rock & roll thing is why Franklin’s teams can’t win the big games!  The time before the Citrus Bowl, Franklin wanted the guys to “enjoy” the experience.  Well we lost to a lesser team but was the trip back to PSU enjoyable?  Yup I’m old school and proud of it.  For you knuckle heads, I never coached football but coached college wrestling for 4 years and high school wrestling for 25. Sometimes I let the kids listen to music at practice but we never went out to music. I told my guys, you want to go out to music, join the dance team.

Oh, for those of you that are interested, google hearing loss and headphones. For no other reason, caring about the athlete’s health, should be reason alone to forbid earbuds.

Oh, it's just an organized carnival.  Lmao.  What you do in practice is what you do in regular season.

I’ve seen Mark Hall and some other wrestlers listening to headphones before a match too! Cael must have lost total control of the wrestling team. Imagine what they could do if they didn’t listen to music!!

GET OFF MY LAWN!!

Different strokes for different folks.  If it helps the kid relax and doesn't impact his play, I'm all for it.  When he/she becomes distracted or unable to focus, changes may need to be made for that individual.  I can see the need for the "distraction".

The hearing loss thing is another matter.  I represent employers and get hearing loss claims, in employment settings where hearing protection is supplied and required.  5 minutes after the whistle, the employees turn the music on and volume up.  I get the claim and my client pays for the hearing loss.

So how many team and individual State and National Championships did your teams achieve? Just curious.

More than most but the mark of a coach is measured by how he/she helps the sport provide a positive impact on the athlete as a person. Some great coaches I know didn’t have a career filled with championships but they did great things for kids. I understand why many believe winning coaches are better but as an educator I think differently.

Adults are one thing, how about young people? The hearing loss epidemic is just starting. During college I worked near machines that made loud noise all day and no one thought about hearing protection.  My hearing is bad and getting worse. I will need hearing aids soon which will cost me around $4,000!  This thread has deviated a bit but like the guy that smoked and got lung cancer definitely regretted using tobacco. This listening to music thing is a recent phenomenon and I just don’t get why some believe they need it. My son is an infantry officer and I asked him if would he allow his soldiers wear headphones if it helped them relax. He laughed.

Anyway, I’m old school and proud of it. Did these guys need to listen to music to achieve greatness?

Doesn’t change my mind. Those athletes would have done the same without listening to music.

Sky,

No I did not listen to music or motivational speakers to get prepared.  I too have hearing loss,  Mine came from being on an aircraft carrier and being about 100 feet from an F4 Phantom taking off, and being on the catwalk 15 feet above the 5" 54 cal gun turret as it was fired.  Running pneumatic tools.  All without hearing protection.
