Love the fact he is not going to come in a and blow up the offense in place... Franklin was smart looking for a OC that was willing to build on what they have.

The Minnesota article said he was in line to get 1.1 million soon.  PSU must be paying more than that.

That or he sees more long term potential at PSU in the CFP and being a PA native.

Minnesota had a good offense so we should be as good if not better next year. This is a great hire IMO James Franklin always stays a foot a head.

Strong hire. Has a documented history of success at Western Michigan and Minnesota, and from all reports is a phenomenal QB coach as well.

His offenses are usually very efficient and limit 3 and outs. Power running game with an RPO/ spread concept. Doesn't need to learn anything on the job, been running it for years.

Good job Franklin

Looks to be a well timed and good hire —Minnesota has shown a consistent improvement in the 3rd down conversion rate from 33.54% in 2017 to 39.76% in 2018 and 50.34% in 2019.   During the same period, Penn State went from 47.95% (2017) to 37.14% (2018) and back up to 41.51% (2019).

@nitnation2016

Are you hoping he keeps the running back rotation too as part of the offense?

I don't care about RB rotation and getting multiple RB's carries... I would believe the hot hand will get the majority as game goes on.

Franklin was smart with the demand of the new OC not starting over.

A great hire for the Lions. Was rumored to be the #2 candidate for the University of TX OC role behind Mike Yurcich.

Great hire, way to go Coach Franklin.

Can't wait to see the Offense next year. Coach Ciarrocca has a proven history of having explosive offenses wherever he's been.

Extremely, and he's someone who has been running that offense for 6-7 years. He should bring some new concepts to the table without throwing out what works.

Also, even his new concepts won't be difficult for anyone because they are based in the same type system.

Fantastic hire! PSU fan growing up and many ties to the area. Strong history of performance and developing qb’s. Excited for next year already!

I not sure what he will add to the offense... If I had to guess I think you will see WR slip screens, Some RB screens and some pure spread.  That is my guess,  I don't anticipate any under center play.

His offenses are based upon a more downhill power run style, RPO, and spread.

I think we ran much more RPO and not as much spread or power running. So if I had to guess, you will see more:

1. Dedicated power runs

2. Slants / Crosses / Screens

3. Outside receivers involved

He has never had this level of athletes, can't wait to see it.

I think we will see a bigger change in the passing game...  I don't really think the issue was not using the outside WR by design, I don't think Clifford was seeing the whole field as well as he should.  Add to that he was throwing to two of the biggest play makers PSU has.

It's going to be fun.

You should see some of the Minn Fan comments, Glad he is gone, When will he figure out to use the TE, Maybe he will go under center, No real big wins, play calling was stale. Did not go for the big play...

Sounds like PSU fans talking about Ricky.

I hope he uses the TE as a receiving threat at PSU,  They could have the best group of reviving TE's in the country.

Their WR's are very good,  PSU has the edge at TE and RB.

Their one WR is top 10 or 15 in the country.

LMAO, the grass is always greener.

Minnesota fans are funny considering Tanner Morgan wasn't on anyone's radar and had a banner season. Apparently they thought the OC had nothing to do with it.

I have a feeling we're going to see a full arsenal of usage next year. What we were good at was a bit different than what he was good at... and it could blend pretty well. I don't think Clifford will forget about the TE or Hamler obviously, but this new OC is from all reports not just a good OC but a very good QB coach. He could really help Clifford with his progressions and how to read the field.

Yeah I agree I think Franklin was looking for the best coach with the easiest transition.  I think Kirk's spread tendencies will work well with what is already established
