Not so fast BT.  I'm on stand by for the Manny bus in case the Terry Train breaks down!

@underlion I hope that is how it works ... JF's form of "dominating" the state in recruiting meant the top talent went elsewhere, so instead of going to V-Tech, they can come to PSU now.

Congrats on the Nebraska win after running your head coach,  JF out of town.

I believe your new HC is already standing on the sidelines,  Terry Smith..

If you want guys like Hartline, get ready to pay a huge salary and I feel Penn state isn't in a position to throw away more money. They're already in a huge hole.

Guys like Hartline don't want a job with existing baggage.

Lesson Reality 101.

@rip lol Never hurts to have a back up plan. But you can't ride them both. I'd be surprised if it's either of them, but if it happened, I think Terry has the inside edge.

My take on Terry Smith...This team played their best game of the year Saturday...They obviously respect this guy and play hard for him as they were all carrying signs to hire him to be their head coach...The gameplan was totally different offensively and the team as a whole just looked different...Terry Smith isn't the button down CEO type...He is a piss and vinegar guy...What you see is what you are going to get...Lets be honest about things...The guy came in to a very tough spot and in my opinion he did the 2 things ever good coach does in a situation like he was placed in...#1 He kept the team together, they played hard and never quit...#2 The team and especially the QB has improved each game...The team got better each week...Truthfully that is what coaching is all about...Get your team prepared to play hard and never quit and see improvement week to week...That is what great coaches do and Terry Smith has done that...Would I hire him to be the next head coach at Penn State...NO but I would do everything in my power to keep him there...Do I think he is capable of doing the job? ABSOLUTELY!!! Do I think he is the BEST candidate for the job..NO...This program needs a real needle mover for their next HC...Terry isn't a needle mover in my opinion...You want to show people you want to win you go and buy out a guy like Cignetti and bring him in...Or any one of these top tier coaches...EVERY coach would be available because I would be willing to pony up the money to bring them in...

Terry has the team behind him, because they know him. Question is, can he sway kids that haven't really gotten to know him to sign on the dotted line?

You never know until you try.  Based on his performance so far, I think he deserves a shot.  Give him the job and bank the money you would have spent on a "splash" hire.  If he doesn't produce after a year, move on to your "splash" hire.  Maybe there won't be as many competing openings next year & you'll have more $$$$ to spend because of the interest you earned on the money you banked, lol!

Actually, we're not in a huge financial hole.  Money-wise, the program is doing very well TYVM.

@rip He needs more than 1 year, next year wasss going to be a rebuilding year no matter who the coach is.  Give him 3 years I say he has kept this team together and the kids know what they get with him.

@cohappy  I like Terry but I don’t know if he’s cut out for HC of a team like Penn St. there’s more to being a HC than taking over a loaded football team. We’re 2-3 since Franklin’s got fired and we’ve lost 2 recruiting classes. The schedule next year will be easier and imo we need a coach to step right in and win. Gotta win right now we can’t take a chance on a coach that’s going to possibly take 3 years. Between Jim Knowles taking 3 years and a HC taking 3 years it’ll be 10 years before we make the splash Pat Kraft is talking about. Jim has picked his shit up so I’m not as nervous as I was but what happens if we replace most players on defense. We gotta get this HC shit right or we get left behind.

@southern-psu-fan Ok, Bro, slow the truck down! You hesitate to get behind Coach Smith, but you keep saying Coach Diaz would be THEE Man! even though he's shown he's not the best head coach around.

@been-there-ii 21-15 at Miami and 15-9 so far at Duke…Penn St is a better situation for him he’ll have better players plus there’s a few players from Duke he might can bring with him…I said might can bring with him if they’re good enough…might. He’s already proven he’s a good fit y’all just judging the man that’s coached 2 average teams. Elko ain’t done a dang thing any better than manny At Duke the wins and loss records are about the same. We can all have our opinions on who we want but in the end we’ll have to get behind who they hire, I am anyway lol

@southern-psu-fan Good lord give it a rest. If PSU is a better situation for him why isn’t it better situation for Drink, Brohm, Chesney, Cignetti, Campbell etc etc ? They all have done more than Manny has as a head coach and they all have lesser jobs than PSU.

PSU would have to be desperate to hire Manny and if he’s so great why aren’t any of those other schools with opening lining up to hire him?

@psujoe Penn St is a better job for all the coaches you just named and I never said otherwise. At Indiana Cignetti has only beat a bunch of average teams except the Oregon game. Campbell and Drink ain’t doing any better than Manny. I don’t know who Chesney is so I doubt that’s true about him, broom I give you.

From a strict financial standpoint I would go out on a limb and say this is the best the Penn State football program has been in a long time because the big money guys are back involved...That is why this is such an important hire...They gotta get the right guy in here with some piss and vinegar to energize this program to get them to the next level...They gotta bring in a guy that knows how to engage with these money guys and keep them involved...Penn State is in a rare position where they can without a doubt identify the coach they want and bring him in here...I would say the only guy that is out of their range is the ole skipping limp wrist from Georgia as his buyout is like 110 million dollars...The more I think about this I am starting to believe they hired Daboll...I don't know how I feel about that...

  1. @the-funeral-director  I’ll get behind whoever they hire but like everybody else I have my favorite coached that I believe can win FD.  I don’t know much about Daboll except he got fired from the Giants. I’m not crazy about Harline but with a college coach like Harline we could possibly get a few players that come with him especially with the dudes we’re losing and a dude like Harline might get some recruits back  that we’ve lost. Daboll might not can do that.

If Daboll is hired and successful, he's back to the NFL in 3 years max; and then you're starting all over. The only way he doesn't go back is with a massive buyout; and imo, a buyout shouldn't keep someone from leaving; that's like a divorce needing to happen b/c it's only gonna get worse, and therefore don't force the issue let it go.

Do you not get the difference between taking over a 3-9 team and building it up... and taking over a 9-4 team?
