@rip the team looks good RIP. Would the recruiting pick back up if TS is hired? Let’s see what happens next week at Rutgers because last night AK and Jim Knowles were getting it done. 7-6 is the new goal

Love him BUT not our shortstop.  You end up having to fire him in a year or two.  No my crystal ball works no better than yours but if he is who I think he is he knows what he wants and it is not head coach.  'It's my locker room' has meaning.

He deserves to be kept at a better salary.  He will stay and publicly say 'I just love being part of the team, love PSU, love Coach X, I told the Admin thanks for consideration but I'm not your guy'

This is not the first time this story has played out with a coach getting fired and someone internal getting the job and the players wanting to keep him.  Happens 4-5 times per year and the media needs something to yap about.

Or he might pull an LJ after Larry was passed over!

Passed over?  Maybe I forget LJ history, not like he got a HC job somewhere else.  I'm guessing he was not kept as DL coach or DC.  But at OSU he is only D-line?  I was disappointed we didn't keep him either.  If PSU doesn't do the right thing by TS I will continue to lose interest in college football.  I watched 1 game this week.  Sorry, I think the new coach gets to pick MOST of his staff.  I didn't get to hire all my staff without some blessing by people above me.

If he pulls a LJ then he isn't who I think he is and we treated him badly.

I might be wrong, but my senior citizen memory recalls Larry interviewed for our HC job and left for the Buckeyes after he didn't get hired by PSU.

Calling for Smith to be hired is purely emotional.

@underlion I just don't want Penn State to hire another Franklin promising the world and losing to winless UCLA

Maybe that's what was missing with this team...emotion!  They surely have played with a heck of a lot more emotion under Terry.  He has them looking like Penn State again!  I say based on how he has turned this team around, hire the man!

RIP, I'd like to believe we can get TS Emotion with TS on board and have a chief executive that can do the things TS isn't good at and doesn't want to be good at.  But I don't know Terry, just building a model of him based on little facts and my life experience.

@underlion we won’t have some of these studs on the field next year that TS took over.

The roster changes and play calling alone show it's not just TS giving them more emotion. Kaytron Allen is being used properly, as is Singleton. We are magically throwing deep passes now too. Mid level passes, not just screens and check downs.

That stuff doesn't happen by chance, he obviously made changes to what the coordinators were allowed to do and how to manage games. No stupid TO fiascos or mismanagement I can see.

Yeah, we went the CEO route with JF and we all saw how that worked out.  I know what you're saying Underlion.  How do you think this model would work? Just hire a chief executive that can do the things TS isn't good at and doesn't want to be good at.  Maybe call him General Manager.  Hire Terry as Head Coach with the understanding he has full autonomy and final say so over the football operation.  As head coach, he could hire and fire assistants and have decision making authority over player recruitment and transfer acquisitions.

Right Southern, I was thinking longer term.  But I think that with the right hire we will not have too terrible drop off in talent.  I think it is harder to turn a program around nowadays but maybe with NIL and the portal it is easier, right coach and $.  It is moneyball now.  Do you spend on players, coaches, facilities to get the most wins?  Education?  We play school 🙂

There are people that step into the breach and do what the team needs short term but long term they are bright enough to know that they are not the man.  And the AD needs to be bright enough to figure out who the man is.  I propose Terry has been around head coaches long enough to know what it is all about and decide for himself how he wants to participate in the PSU Program.  I hope we end up with something mutually beneficial.

IMO the players wouldn't be holding signs and leading cheers to hire TS if he wasn't capable of the job. They obviously see in him what Franklin was lacking, whatever that may be.

Kids don't forget that quickly about their cosch if they loved playing for him. IMO it's obvious now that Franklin had completely lost the locker room and team.

Absolutely good points, Roam.  Maybe with Terry's direction as HC, AK would be salvageable.  I'm sure Knowles would be a keeper!

Different model for this new world order...risky but things have changed haven't they?  Can you sell a kid that Terry is the game day boss and you are the GM?  Kind of like pro baseball.  I hire and fire while consulting with the coach,  I do NIL contracts.  He coaches.  But in reality that is what an empowered OC and DC could have been under JF?  And many players act like it is all about their position coach.  Risky but it seems to me the college coaching position has doubled in complexity so maybe you are right.

Penn State fans suffer from blind loyalty and emotions. The bar is so low a QB and the number 2 preseason team with a top 15 roster despite their record goes out there and dispatches Michigan State and Nebraska and you’re ready to give the farm away.

@kularrow i still want manny or Fitzgerald but we had a chance to beat Indiana and Iowa. I believe Grunk is good enough today to beat then 2 teams. He’s got better every snap.

Not just PSU fans 🤣   Loyalty is good when earned so you used the modifier 'Blind'.  I am a bit baffled how a team that was unimpressive against 3 cupcakes to start the season beat MSU and NE with the backup QB, LB, Coach ...  MSU is a dumpster fire but NE is an average B10 team.  Not motivated after the loss to Oregon?  Bad Coaching (motivation and X/O's)?

The process is interesting, I hope Kraft gets it right which in my mind is a proven HC that can recruit AND some loyalty to current staff if at all possible.  I hope VTECH doesn't prove Kraft wrong but it just seems that the PSU team/coaches were not buying the JFF pitch anymore.  I expect JFF will get VT competitive in the ACC.  He is already yapping about dominating VA in recruiting...same script.  Winning doesn't help recruiting as much as it used to, nor does facilities, or assistance in going pro.  Saban and Meyer know it as does Kraft and Terry Smith.

This worked out great for the Oakland Raiders and Antonio Pierce. No offense to the players but there’s a reason you play the game and the others coach it. The idea that players understand the nuances of being a HC enough to have a qualified opinion is flawed at best.

I didn't say hire him, I said it's obvious the team responds to him.

Can we stop acting like praising someone for doing a good job in tough circumstances means I'm saying let's blindly hand over the keys now.

Both can be true, enough of this black and white crap where saying anything nice is construed as hire him immediately. I can give the man his props and still think we should be doing a national search.

They are 20 year olds.  The thing they know most is football and then maybe alcohol.  They are still trying to figure out girls...we know better.  It is relevant that they like TS, they likely even respect him.  But the scope of their experience and therefore opinion is limited.  I am afraid that hiring him as HC would be a disservice to the team, PSU and TS.  Often better off doing what you love where you love it instead of moving up the ladder hating the job and getting fired the next time the team loses a few games.  On the other hand say he gets a JoePa salary of 5M a year and he gets fired after 2 years....set for life, we would all be tempted to try :-).  Not only do the kids have to respect you but the coaches and 'investors'.

@southern-psu-fan Brother Southern, Bob officially resigned his seat on the Manny bus for a seat on the Terry Train. It's just you against Nittany Nation. 🤨
