...If there was a better QB on the roster all along and the coaches failed to start him, that's on the coaches....

Only to a point, a good OC can't help it if his QB is airmailing passes to the other team or throwing INT to defenders who a 5 yards behind in coverage. Especially when the head coach is telling the OC who the QB is. I doubt Ciorrcoa had authority to yank Clifford if he wanted to, that's Franklin.

And no, a good OC can only tailor an offense so much. If your QB can't throw to wide outs and is staring down receivers, no amount of tinkering is going to help.

There's a reason Ryan Day's offense didn't look great when Tate Martell was running it, and it's not because he forgot how to coach or couldn't tailor it to him. It's because Tate MArtell wasn't a good QB.

Again, if there was a better QB on the roster all along and the coaches failed to start him, that's on the coaches.

Again, how is it on the offensive coordinator if he doesn't have authority to make a change?

Not to mention the new OC wasn't allowed to see the quarterbacks until late August anyway because of COVID. He literally had no idea what his roster of quarterbacks looked like. I think it's extremely likely that James Franklin told him who the quarterback was, and he played him until Franklin finally just had to make a change.

It's no secret that Franklin is very loyal and doesn't like to rip players out of a starting spot. The dude made the team suffer through a full year of hackenberg throwing the ball into the ground when he had McSorley on the bench LOL

My comment wasn't directed specifically or even primarily toward the OC, Roam.  "Coaches" is the plural of "coach."  And what is going on this season falls more on the coaches collectively than it does on any one player.

"if there was a better QB on the roster all along and the coaches failed to start him, that's on the coaches."

That statement isn't about the season, it's about who the starting quarterback is. I seriously doubt the LB coach, D Coordinator, or any other coach outside of the HC have anything to do with who the starting QB is. Do you?

Regardless, I better understand that you were talking more about the season and not just the quarterback now. Thanks

Why would you think I was directing that particular comment more toward the LB coach and D coordinator (who have other issues to address) than to Franklin?  And, yes, this thread is about the season and so I am trying to do my best to keep this thread on subject.

It will be very interesting.  We COULD do a lot of things but WILL we?  A new quarterback might help but I suspect the issue is deeper and that a QB alone will not be enough. Penn State has a serious flaw(s?) somewhere and one could speculate. It may be a percent of many factors. I have seen games against Iowa before and they are always tough. I suspect Coach Ferentz more than has them ready. We'll see.  Unless some pride shows as a group I would be extremely disappointed, but not shocked at an O season. By the time we get to games that we are speculated to win we may be so down it does not matter; who else will opt out, who else will lay down some, etc.  I hope I am proven to be a complete moron but I'd take odds on it.

Okay seriously?

I responded to to your comment about "if there was a better quarterback on the bench the coaches are to blame" by saying I doubt the offensive coordinator had any control over it and it was the head coach's decision.

You litteraly responded to that post, a post where I did not mention anything else other than the quarterback, by saying coaches meant plural and you weren't just talking about the offensive coordinator.

I responded by basically stating any coach outside of the HC doesn't make that decision. At all. Not the DC, not the LB coach, not any other coach on the roster.

@mean-green-lion

Regardless, let's just chalk it up to me misunderstanding you and you misunderstanding me and move on.

I am sure if we were both sitting at a bar we would have understood what each other was saying immediately, had a swig of beer, and moved on to talk about how sad it is to see Penn State at 0-4

Enjoy the game today!

@psfaninsc Indiana coach won’t ever win what James Franklin has and James Franklin won more at Vanderbilt than Indiana has. This is 1 bad year look at the last 6 years this is just 1 of those years. If we have a bad year next year then I’ll start to worry.
