Out of curiosity I went back and looed through other high profile programs and their records for the past 40 years and basically:

  • aside from runs of excellence, teams e.g. AL, Clemson, OSU, USC, FSU, PSU etc.. most top end teams (including the ones mentioned) are perennial ~2-4 loss teams per year looking back.
  • same goes for current HCs with the exceptions being far and few ~ e.g. Saban, Myers, Dabo and they also had a few crap seasons.

I think what separates the top end coaches though, is the self accountability for their programs and at the higher end of that group you just don't see repeated bone headed decision making; what you do see is an attitude and demonstration of, that isn't happening again.

Recruiting wise, sure some programs can't get the elite players but some of these coaches just know how to max out the contribution and even when they lose it is more of just not having the horses to run the full race so to speak, but they didn't beat themselves by poor  coaching or team play; that is admirable; that to me is coaches and players playing to win top down bottom up.

As far as PSU goes, just put a competitive team on the field, be disciplined, be hard nose not hard headed, stop doing the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome unless you are doing things right, and if you can't pull all of that off then get on down the road.
