By some new gear! Penn State is going to be a powerhouse for the next few years and you are going to want to some new shirts w/o holes in them! Maybe wait until January 2023 so you get yourself one of those 2023 Penn State National Title shirts!

GO STATE!!!!

If you don't consider Michigan state elite, then there's no way that we are elite. Since joining the Big 10, they have about the same number of Big 10 titles as we do and they've actually been to a playoff.

I don't really care about what we did in the 80s or earlier, that has no bearing on whether or not we're elite in 2022.

@roaminglion  Michigan is elite, Michigan St is mediocre. Penn St is a threat to win the NC every few years and we seen what happened to Michigan St if they make the playoffs…38-0 with Saban taking it easy. We have much better players than Michigan St they just can’t recruit like the big dawgs.  Michigan St might be better than mediocre but definitely not elite.

Gimme sum of your stuff. If michigan state is mediocre than Penn state must be mediocre too.

36 meetings total

Michigan state 18-17-1

First you said MSU is mediocre,  than you contradicted yourself by saying their better than mediocre.

@blushoes  I said they might be mediocre. They can’t recruit like Penn St. I believe we had to play catch up when we got into the big 10. Michigan St use to be really tough back in the day like Minnesota but not so much today.Penn St can recruit better it’s just that simple. James Franklin needs to step it back up this year or he’ll be facing some heat. The last 2 years are unacceptable. Franklin recruits great, he’s great with the kids and I’m sure he does a lot of other good things but that don’t mean chit if you’re losing to Indiana, Illinois and Arkansas.

We have never, ever, been a threat to win the national title since Paterno left.

The closest we came was 2016, when didn't even make it into the playoff.  Saying we were a threat to win the national title that year is nonsense considering we couldn't even beat USC.

2017 was probably our best team, but even then we couldn't beat... Guess who? Michigan State.

@roaminglion  I understand that but we have the players to contend James Franklin just didn’t get it done on the sidelines. Jim Delany cost us in 2016 imo and 2017 was a disaster giving up a 21-0 lead on Ohio St we just didn’t get it done but we had the players.

So when we dont get it done it's all "we have the players" but when Michigan State actually makes the playoff they are lucky?

Penn State is an Elite program....period!  Sure, they are not winning National titles, but their time is coming just like the rest:

GA.....42 year draught

Clemson....35 year draught

Ohio State....34 year draught

Okla....1 title in the last 37 years

ND.....34 years since their last title

Michigan.....23 years since their last title

Penn State.....36 years since their last title

LSU.....45 year draught

All of these programs are Elite and just like Penn State, most of them went through long periods of time between National Championships. Bama is an exception, I think they only went 13 years ( in modern times ).  The only thing I would agree with is that Penn State has not been much of a serious contender for quite sometime.  In 2016 they were firing on all 8 cylinders (at the end of the year) and possibly could have made some noise had they made the playoffs vs Ohio State.

Penn State needs to get it together and bring a title back to Happy Valley in the next  two years.

GO STATE!!!

Elite teams “get it done” and PSU hasn’t done that since the 80’s and are 11-11 the past 2 seasons. NOT ELITE and not even close to it.

If I were you.......I would pick another team to cheer for and avoid coming here as much as possible.  This is only for ELITE fans and I am not quite sure you have what it takes to stomach this program right now! Got to drink a lot of PBR and follow Nascar if you want to hang with the likes of Southern and Co!

I wouldn't have classified Georgia as an elite team until the last few years when Kirby arrived,  Or Clemson as elite it until Dabo took over.

Elite teams don't wax poetic about the past, they're elite in the here and now.  Georgia is elite because they have been a serious contender every year for the past 5 years. Clemson's "bad" year in the last 10 was 10-3.

I wouldnt call Michigan elite either. They are up and down, never consistently championship material.

Georgia and Clemson are elite because they contend for championships just about every year now. That's elite.  If your down year is disappointing because you didn't make a playoff, that's elite.  If your best year is disappointing because you didn't make a playoff, you're not elite.

Does it really matter how we classify Penn State?  I am fairly certain at the end of the day if Penn State is considered Elite or not, my quality of life will not change! I am also a 100% certain that come September - Elite status or not - I will have Penn State as a National Contender until they lose a game. Already downloaded my tix, most likely going to Auburn and maybe the Big house, and I am looking forward to Sothern's week 1 Big Dawg ranking!

IDK, I guess I just enjoy the game day atmosphere and hanging out with my old man on Saturdays. I would love for Penn State to win a National Championship, but that would just bee an added value to what I already get from them!

I'd like to think that my team has work to do and needs to get better, rather than believing they are elite and contend for the title every time they step on the field. Even Franklin said we weren't elite, I'd expect if the head coach says it maybe the fans would agree.

I feel while not vitally important, it at least sets some realistic expectations for the fanbase.

Lastly... I think WE CAN BE elite, we just arent there yet! And I love the gameday atmosphere too!!!

Nope I’m not going anywhere, love reading southern and your excuses about how we’re obviously the best team in the country but “just can’t get it done”.Every forum has its delusional few and also their realists and I’ve been around PSU long enough to prefer to be the latter.

The game day atmosphere is why I’ll be in State College most game days this fall but I will not sit and watch the same garbage I’ve witnessed the past few years. I’ll leave and be on Spring Creek or The Little J casting flies to wild browns instead.

PSU used to be a perennial powerhouse, not anymore. IMO to be a perennial power house the team has to be in the mix for championships year and year out.  Elite is the school that consistently gets it done and that is Bama in the modern day so to speak, along with Clemson and GA, OSU.

Records are interesting when one goes back and looks at the past up to present day e.g. Clemson, TX, LSU, FL, FSU, ND, Miami, etc have been pretty much run of the mill programs with the exception of a few good runs and a shit load of media hype, then back to just being there.

Anyways, yes, PSU is a Wrestling School and I'd say, elite at that, at least for now!

Yes, Penn State can be Elite again, but JF has to turn that corner soon! I am still baffled at his backup QB decision vs Iowa last year and then the decision to play Cliff against Illinois when he was obviously not 100%.  Christian V - IMO - should have been the QB of choice and I am questioning how JF (and the rest of the coaches) didn't see this or know this.  We saw what he did against Rutgers, so how is possible not to know this kid was your #2 behind Cliff? Somewhere along the line during practices, they had to know Christian was there best backup QB.  Somebody missed that!  I am totally convinced that that one decision last year cost them an Elite Status and now they will have to try again this year!

- Christian takes over and finishes the game vs Iowa with a win. Now you have confidence in a backup QB so you can sit Cliff out against a bad Illinois team giving him one more week before Ohio State.  They had a very good chance of beating Ohio State last year and if Cliff had one more week to rest before THAT game.....could have made a big difference! See, these are the types of decisions that I have a hard time swallowing when you are paying a guy Millions of dollars.

But then again, JF has done a nice job keeping Penn State relevant and hopefully this year when we least expect it, he brings one home so we all can use the word ELITE for one year!!

GO STATE!!

@mtnittanylion  exactly the way I see things. I said after the Iowa loss we’re in trouble but I hadn’t seen CV play. We’ve had lack of concentration on the sidelines for the last 2 years and it’s killing us. Hopefully James Franklin can get back to his old self and get this team back in the top 5 because we have the players it’s the decisions on the sidelines that’s been beating us. I’m feeling pretty good that he will.

I was not happy after the Iowa loss and when I seen our backup QB play I knew we were in trouble. That’s the first time I really started doubting James Franklin because the QB play was so bad. I even got into it with 99 and Roam after that game and a few others. Anybody that knows me knows if I see bad QB play I ain’t happy and I promise you after that Iowa disaster I wasn’t happy at all remoh.

Yeah,  the way he went down suddenly was rather strange when Iowa started gaining momentum.  It's almost like he was told when to play hurt , when to hobble around,  when to come off the field. I watched that game among other present family members and friends.  I remember it fondly.  There were certain times he forgot which part of his body was injured. Other things were brought to my attention about his injury that work in the medical field.

so being 5-1 ain’t to bad I’m just having a hard time shaking that loss off to Iowa. I smelled blood up 17-3 so it usually takes me a week to get over it. Man, we had ‘em right where we wanted ‘em…crap 😂  you know you’re living a great life with Jehovah privilege  when all you got to worry about is losing a football game. Just deal with it southern we lost lol

I said this on October 15th so hopefully you can tell I wasn’t happy about the game and I wasn’t happy with some of the things I said because it’s just football. If I’m not happy with James Franklin I’m not going to demonize him because I know he’s trying and wants to win but I’m telling ya, I’ve not been good with the last 2 years something needs to change or a change is needed at head coach.

Too many distractions!  James has been focused on facilities, program upgrades, contracts, recruiting and establishing the run game (LOL). Now he seems focused on NIL issues.  This is all well and good and appropriate for the CEO.  As I've been saying, he just needs to butt out and let his coordinators do the actual in game coaching.  If they get the job done, we'll be fine and on our way to being "elite".  If they don't, as CEO, he needs to fire their arses and hire someone who can.
