I support the decision. Got 9 games in stayed, stayed healthy and ends on a 4-0 run.
GO STATE!!
I don’t, I think they should play especially since other teams will be playing in bowl games. I think they should play if there’s no breakout with the virus.
I think this makes it more likely that those bubble guys stay, I don't see many drafted players from our team
I am sure it was a tough decision, but they played 9 straight weeks and the next few weeks is going to be brutal with this virus. I say go home, see your family and start next year on a 4 game winning streak.
GO STATE!
@mtnittanylion. Ohio st won’t quit on the season and neither should Penn St. The big dawgs should never give up we have a chance to get to 5-5.
Penn State didn't quit! Ohio State is most likely playing in the Playoffs. If PSU was going to playoffs, they would not opt out. Why put yourself in harms way with this virus to play one more not so meaningful game. I am sure you will see others follow suit tomorrow.
This season was a real Sht Show and for PSU to be able to get 9 straight weeks of playing time in is enough for them! End it on a good note and let the kids go home.
It's surprising but it makes a lot of sense. Saturdays game was about as good of an ending as they could have this year and now they get to spend the holidays with friends and families.
Best decision Franklin made.
Good job on the team making the decision; go home and enjoy the holiday with family and friends and get ready for Spring ball! In all seriousness though, it will be interesting to see how Covid plays out and the effect on Spring ball.
On a side note, it's been fun participating on the forum this season. Nice to follow along with the good humor, badgering, and armchair coaching; I think some of you guys outta put in for grad assistant positions, hell I think everything from recruiting, conditioning, evaluation, development, and opinions is thoroughly covered and would be an asset to the coaching staff, lol..
You all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Years.
I'm ok with the decision.
I can appreciate the decision to opt out. Aside from a meaningless game against maybe an inferior opponent, how much fun could the players have on a bowl trip given COVID restrictions? The only question I have (haven't read any articles or heard any reports) is who made the decision, players or Franklin? If the decision came from the players without any "guidance" from coaches, I respect their choice. However, if Franklin made the call or "suggested" the opt out, then I think it short changes the kids. Anyway, I'm thankful for their efforts in playing this season and happy with the strong finish. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
@rip From the announcement:
As you know, we rely on our captains and Leadership Council to provide a voice for our team, and our student-athletes made the difficult choice not to participate in a bowl this year in order to spend time with loved ones. We are fully supportive of their decision, knowing it has been many months since our students-athletes have been able to spend time with their families and the challenges they endured, both physically and mentally. This will be an opportunity for our guys to go home, see family and recharge for the spring semester.”
@mtnittanylion. Ohio st won’t quit on the season and neither should Penn St. The big dawgs should never give up we have a chance to get to 5-5.
Couldn't disagree with you more on this one. These kids have been in lockdown isolated to their bubble for over 9 weeks because of covid. To play in 1 stupid meaningless bowl game they would continue to be isolated from their families and loved ones and miss the holidays with them.
What does playing in a crap bowl game against a crap opponent do for them? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Their time would be better spent enjoying the holidays with their family. That is a BIG DAWG decision. I would expect more understanding from a Christian Family Man like you Brother!
IMO, any success this year will have an asterisk behind it, as so will any inferior season, this season is a write-off in my books and was nothing but entertainment value. 4-5 or 5-5 does not make a bit of difference this year!
I hope the kids get to go home and really appreciate and enjoy their families after being away form them for so long because that is truly a blessing to have, way more so than playing in the fricken Dukes Mayonnaise bowl... As Roam would say FFS!!!!
@navylion. Please don’t be offended brother I don’t mean any disrespect I love the Penn St players it’s just the way I’m programmed and it’s not a good thing or bad thing It’s just who I am. I remember missing a days of school for the chicken pox and a day because we had some family members murdered other than that I never missed a day of school. I haven’t missed a day of work besides being off with my wife because she was sick in 28 years. I just believe you go until you can’t go and it’s not a good thing or bad thing it’s just me. Sorry if I offended anybody I do care about people and I want what’s best for whoever. Sorry guys
@southern-psu-fan not offended Brother, I just disagree with your stance on this. God, Family, Country brother, those are the top 3 things that matter in life IMO. NCAA football ain't in that top 3!!
Thanks for the info, Navy. As I said in my post, as long as this was a players decision, I'm all for it. God knows they have made tremendous sacrifices to get through the 9 game season. Hope they are proud of themselves and enjoy the Christmas holidays with their families and loved ones.
No need to apologize Southern. I think I know where you're coming from. If it wasn't for COVID, I'd feel the same way. Normally, I believe you don't opt out when there's another mountain to climb. In this case, there just doesn't seem to be a challenge worthwhile pursuing. We're all entitled to our opinion so I don't believe you offended anyone. Best wishes to you & the family for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hope you all keep safe and healthy!
I have no problem with the decision. Only the team and coaches know what they through - I am happy to have watched 9 games and look forward to next year.
@rip same to you and everyone on this board! With all the crap going on in life, and living down in SEC Gator country, this is my 1 place of refuge that I truly enjoy coming too. Although we don't always agree with each other, you are truly a bunch of great people and dedicated PSU fans. Well all of us except for CT and the Rutgers fan! Hey, but even CT is a good dude regardless of his choice of college teams!!
May you all truly count your blessing, enjoy time with your families and be safe during this holiday season! Merry Christmas (or whatever you religious preference) and a very Happy New Year!!
WE ARE!!
He called a timeout and took some time to call the play.
As a fan I'm disappointed, if I was a player and the option was a poor bowl game with none of the fun associated with a bowl game and an empty stadium... more time away from family...
With the situation I don't see taking advantage of the extra practice time even if the NCAA allowed it.
I can argue both sides. Definitely disappointed but I understand why.
And suddenly, the 2020 season was gone
