Screw 'em!
Bill, I think you missed my post where I said
"In all honesty though, IMO the thing that “killed” the rivalry more than anything else was Pitt tearing down their stadium and deciding to play at Heinz. Pitt basically said they just didn’t really care about football all that much, and were content to have some good teams here and there but not worry about it all to much."
Pretty much echoes what you said. Pitt as a school and fanbase just doesn't care enough about football to have a rivalry with. As much as I would love to have a rivalry with them, and think it would be great, I also realize who they are.
I also stated I think if any team has the potential to play every year for a OOC rivalry, I think that team may be Syracuse. If it were anyone.
I had a friend that screwed a panther once. Just once though. I say we play the game every year in SC. When Spitt proves they're a worthy opponent, then we can discuss going to Shittsburg to play.
didnt miss it, just added my 2 cents worth.
Murray don’t you think playing Pitt is better than playing Akron? Even if you lose a little money, maybe they can play 2 games at penn st and 1 game in Pittsburgh? These Akron’s and Ga state games are gimme games, we already have a few of them games with Rutgers and Illinois. Maybe I’m missing something but it can’t be all about money because PennLive had an article saying penn st is one of the richest schools in the big 10.
You are of course making the assumption that Syracuse wants to play Penn State. http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootball/index.ssf/2015/04/syracuse_football_penn_state_series.html
Pitt is Syracuse's permanent crossover game. So, they are already traveling to Pennsylvania every other year.
If you don't think that the money is that important, this story stresses one reason why they need to bankroll a lot of money. Repairs and renovations aren't cheap.
If you missed it, I was speaking hypothetically. You nor I know what Syracuse wants, therefore there is no reason to argue it.
I am speaking about what makes sense for Penn State, not reading tea leaves about if Syracuse would play the games.
Who agrued money wasn't important? Southern said they would lose out on a bit, certainly nowhere near what those facility upgrades would cost.
The article you posted has little to do with home game money. We already schedule as many games at home as we can, and need massive investments from donors to build the facilities listed. It stated as much in the article. 1 home game extra a year isn't putting a dent in those figures.
That said, I don't agree with Southern about Temple. There is nothing there, historically or otherwise. It would be like saying Georgia should play Georgia State every year "just because".
We'll just have to agree to disagree.
I’m no recruiting expert but I’ve heard Buck Belue say Vince Dooley played Florida in Jacksonville so he could recruit South Georgia and playing Ga Tech in Atlanta also helped in recruiting so I figured if that’s the case then playing a game in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh should help penn st in recruiting, wouldn’t it be the same Roam? Plus playing temple and Pitt keeps money in state right?
Agree to disagree about what? You think we are building 600 million + worth of facilities due to an extra home game?
That's pretty much the only thing I disagree with you on. I stated this many times... I want to play Pitt for the rivalry, but also understand that THEY would need to show a commitment to football again in order to make it worth while. Until the build an on campus stadium, I don't see their fanbase caring about a team that plays on the other side of the city.
But again, 1 lost home game every two years isn't going to make or break building those facilities. That money is coming from donations.
No southern, thgat would not be the same. The reason has already been stated: We already own that area. The only thing it would do is bring Pittsburgh over to the east for them to gain exposure.
Penn State is pretty much THE dominant brand in PA, NJ, & NY when it comes to football. There is nothing to gain from bringing Pitt over to an area we already recruit well.
After everything said an done, IMO the best way to schedule with a 9 game conference slate is this:
3 OOC games:
One is always a patsy, has to be done. MAC team or other to come into State College for an easy game. Needs to be done, every team does so.
Second game I'd like to see a regional team on the schedule. Cycle between VT, WVU, PITT, Syracuse, UConn, BC, Virginia. This would give exposure for recruiting in multiple areas within proximity of central PA.
Third game would be a Power 5 from further out. PAC-12, Big-12, SEC types.
Also, try to balance the two Power 5's out. If you schedule a VT, maybe try to get Kansas or Oregon State. If it's UVA or UConn, then go for Auburn or Oklahoma.
Good luck selling your plan to a competitive Power-5 school.
Y’all know more than me on recruiting but I have heard people say we don’t recruit WPA all that great anymore and could it be because we quit playing Pitt 25 years ago? I’m just trying to connect the dots on why we don’t dominate recruiting in WPA
We’ve had great success scheduling power 5 teams in the past haven’t we? Alabama, ND, USC, we are playing auburn and VT in the coming years I think. Them are some heavy weights IMO
SPF.....Pitt = Akron
As for recruiting, look, this is a top P5 team. They don't need to play somewhere else in state to recruit it.
Live in WPA. IMHO Just another game on our schedule. A win against Pitt does little for us yet a win by them helps make their season. An appearance by our team in Pittsburgh gives our fans and any possible future recruits a chance to see Penn State without driving to SC. Would actually rate this a neutral site game given the poor attendance at Pitt. Many Penn State fans will attend. Pitt only draws well when name teams (Penn State, ND, etc.) play here. Without their own stadium Pitt students must either take public transportation or drive to the stadium which they share with the Steelers (too far to walk). Just MHO.
they recruit western PA just fine.
Pitt would be the cupcake.
Another issue I have with playing Pitt is the fact that you cannot buy single game ticket to Pitt. you either need to buy the entire season package or two additional games, such as Youngstown State, Albany, North Carolina State or some other game that nobody from the Big Ten wants to watch. Last year our strength of schedule was hurt because we played them.
The fix was on last year regardless what our strength of schedule was, Georgia got blown out by auburn and Alabama lost the last game of the season and the rest of the SEC was pretty much garbage, no way the SEC should’ve got 2 teams in leaving out conference champions. We found out that ND was way overrated and that’s the only team Georgia beat that had a pulse during the regular season and Alabama got to sit at home and watch conference champs beat each other up and they got in so like I said the fix was on brother.
Navyjag, I don’t think the games were fixed but I do think the fix was on who they wanted in, you know when jim Delany ain’t crying when Ohio st gets screwed somethings up. It was the big 10 turn to sit out, y’all do realize the big 10 champ has been left out of the playoffs 2 straight years...the system is pure garbage.
Seems as though ND usually gets rated a bit better than they should be.
