being from Atlanta I probably don’t have the hate for Pitt like some of you guys do but I do remember playing Pitt every year and I remember how fun that game was. I saw on pennlive where it might be a decade before they play again. I still believe in rivalry games and I believe we should play Pitt every year maybe play the game in Philadelphia just play. I love tradition in college football and I believe it’s good for college football, I just hate to see money hurt the sport. If it can hurt nascar it can get to football also. Bad decisions from the leadership has killed nascar and IMO it can kill college football to.

lol Now that's zero dark thirty! I can remember sitting in the stands at the end of Nov. as we played Pitt, freezing my ass off in the snow and/or rain. Not really sure how I feel about the whole thing. I guess I wouldn't mind playing them once in a while, but I have a hard time letting go of the Big East BS. For the most part, I say "screw 'em!"

Be safe!

I agree we should play Pitt every year, I love the rivalry games.  I don't subscribe to the whole "we don't get anything out of it" nonsense, Imagine if Georgia said that and stopped playing GT? Terrible.

On thing though, playing the game in Philly would be spitting on the face of many fans.  Neither team is from that area, and it's not in-between either.  Would really make zero sense.  Just continue to do the home and home, it's better that way.  Alabama & Auburn fans are happy that they now play the games on campus instead of Birmingham, and I know a lot of UT fans who would rather play the Red River Rivalry on campus than at the Texas fair.

There is no rivalry any more. Let it go! Let's play an intersectional game against somebody good like Alabama, Oklahoma, or USC (the one from Kalifornia) instead.

If there were no rivalry, we wouldn't be talking about Pitt as much as we do on here. Even if just joking about them or making fun of them...  No rivalry means apathy, we wouldn't be mentioning them at all.

So yes, there is still a rivalry.

You’re probably right Roam about playing in Philadelphia, just play the game and drop teams like Ga State and play a good Power 5 conference team and ONE cupcake teams, I’m with you it’s a rivalry game and the last 2 years backs it up because both stadiums were pretty rowdy and it was fun to watch.

Only old folks talk about a Pitt rivalry nostalgically. The millennials and beyond don't see what all the fuss is about. I've come around to agree with them.

My oldest son is 25 and he loves Penn st playing Pitt, Roam is exactly right it’s people saying penn st don’t get anything out of the game which is garbage because playing in Pittsburgh is good for recruiting and beating up on Pitt is great for recruiting lol

Not really, Penn State gets more recruits out of New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland than western Pa these days. Talk to the students on campus, most don't see it as a rivalry.

There’s more of us than they are current students, just look at the last 2 games, sellouts.

Ohio State and Michigan are also sellouts. I believe Nebraska, Iowa, Maryland, and even Rutgers have been.

Here's an article from 1999 that sums up the attitude:  http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archives/article_955eb0ff-7432-5196-90d2-62d3aec6e892.html

When I read this article at the time, I thought this young man doesn't know what he is talking about. I've come around in my thinking.

Explain how you schedule seven home games every year that way.

I'd agree 4 years ago when we weren't playing them, but I was at the Pitt game.  There were plenty of students there with "#@$@# on Pitt" shirts and talking all sorts of junk about them.

You don't see that kinda stuff when we play Rutgers or Indiana.  It's a rivalry, the only reason "kids today" don't care much is because WE WERENT PLAYING THEM.

1. "The outcome does not affect conference standings, and in recent years the outcome of the game has pretty much been known before kickoff.

Pittsburgh enters this game as a 35-point underdog and, most likely, the score will fall somewhere close to that predicted range."

Shows how much he knew, the game was 20-17 and very good.

2. "Thankfully, the final stage in the rivalry at Penn State will end tomorrow." - No it didn't, they had another game the next year.  One which Pittsburgh won.

3. His notion that a game needs to affect the standings is RIDICULOUS.  Georgia v. Georgia Tech has nothing to do with standings, nor does South Carolina v. Clemson. Both are fantastic rivalries. Missouri v. Kansas is still missed after Mizzou left for the SEC, and that wasn't really a rivalry with conference implications.

4. I'd like to direct this author to watch a freaking Iron Bowl if he thinks fans throwing things at players is a "childish feud" and therefore not a rivalry.  You've got fans shooting people, fans poisoning trees, fans getting into bar fights, etc. etc. etc.  If he even tried to tell those people that they didn't have a rivalry he'd be "disappeared".  LOL

In all honesty though, IMO the thing that "killed" the rivalry more than anything else was Pitt tearing down their stadium and deciding to play at Heinz. Pitt basically said they just didn't really care about football all that much, and were content to have some good teams here and there but not worry about it all to much.

In some ways, I think Syracuse might be a better OOC team to try and have a yearly rivalry with.

Georgia does it every other year so if Georgia can make it Penn Sr can make it, that’s my point, don’t let a little bit of money destroy tradition, it’s also probably good for the state of Pennsylvania for the 2 teams to play.

Georgia only plays eight conference games, which means that they can fit two home and home games on their schedule. But if you look at their nonconference schedule in 2018 and 2020, you'll notice they have three "cupcakes" on the menu. Georgia also only supports 19 varsity sports from two revenue generators (football and basketball). Penn State supports 31 from three revenue generators (football, basketball, and ice hockey). Football is by far the biggest revenue generator at both schools.

I agree that the young man had a lot to learn about journalism. Hopefully, he's learned something in past 20 years, but the sentiment is pretty much "Pitt who?" The main focus is on OSU, Michigan, and other B1G rivals.

Fine. We can have a rivalry game. We just won't be playing any other traditional Power-5 teams.

But my attitude can best be summed up in the words of my distinguished colleague "Screw 'em".

IMO we should play Pitt and temple every year and play a power 5 team, it would be great for recruiting even if they lose a little bit of money, I don’t think penn st is hurting for money.BTW Georgia plays Florida in Jacksonville every year so they don’t have 8 home games every year.Heck,  just split the money with temple and Pitt regardless where they play just play, wouldn’t it be good for the state of Pennsylvania if all 3 teams had to play each other every year?

Seriously, this game doesn't matter. When PSU didn't play Pitt, the only people bringing it up were Pitt people unless it was a PSU fan laughing at Pitt.  They beat PSU 2 times in their last 10 tries, in a year when the team was absolutely decimated by the sanctions (and nearly lost that one) and a year PSU struggled going 5-7. A ranked Pitt team hasn't beat PSU since 1980.

Rivalry? When Ga visits GT the stands are filled with GT fans. Same goes for most other rivalries. The home team fills the stands. When PSU visits Pitt, the stands are filled with PSU fans. That is a fact. It's only a rivalry to PSU fans in that they want the Nits to shut Pitt up.

No, this game doesn't matter. If it did, Pitt would fill their stadium and NOT offer season ticket packages that include this game. They'd want all the tix for their fans. They're trying to make their program relevant by using PSU.

Has Pitt beat a contender or three? Yes, but again, that doesn't make them relevant. It makes them the underdog that won a big game. They're not a very good team, nor have they been for a long time. They've had ONE 10 win season and 2 nine win seasons since 1982, have only finished the season ranked 4 times since 1984 and the highest was 15. They've had 14 even or sub .500 years. In the same time span PSU has 15 ten win seasons with 8 nine win seasons with only 6 sub .500 seasons. Sorry Pitt fans, they are a mid pack to cupcake team.

Well, if you want to use that kind of reasoning. Why can't they both just come to our house every year?Pitt did that to us from 1903 to 1966 with all but four games played in Pittsburgh during that time span. I think they owe us a few. We could even give them a nice pay check. See how far we get with that argument.

As for the "little bit of money", it is a multimillion dollar business that supports 31 varsity sports off of three revenue generators. Pitt and Temple support 19 varsity sports from two revenue generators.

Georgia has seven home games in 2018 just like Penn State.  http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-18/2018-georgia-bulldogs-football-schedule.php They did this by scheduling three "cupcakes" and Georgia Tech in their nonconference. As far as the game in Jacksonville with Florida, I'm sure that they split the gate every year which averages to getting the equivalent of a home gate every other year. So, in the long run, Georgia doesn't lose any revenue and may even gain some. That is part of the flexibility of having only eight conference games. Georgia also doesn't have a mandate from the conference to not play 1-AA teams. Austin Peay is a 1-AA school.
