Just for fun I spent a little time youtubing past teams from 67-present. What is very noticeable is the difference in the O'line and the ability to flat knock the D'line backwards at the snap. When you watch videos of Cappy, Warner, Enis, Carter, Johnson, etc run the ball, there is tendancy to watch the RB but damn when you focus on the O'line you can really see the push and holes that were being opened up, as I mentioned if a different post , You just don't see that with any current team on a consistent basis, why not?
The RPO is not an offense like that..
That was real smash mouth football! Today, finesse?
The days of knocking DL of the ball is pretty much over. The DL is much better than the OL today it’s eve that way in the NFL that’s why they pass so much. In today’s big dawg football regardless if it’s the NFL or college you get very small holes and you’ve got to have RB’s that can explode through the lines and break tackles. That’s why the RB’s today are shorter and smaller they can scat through the lines. The John Riggins won’t work today because they don’t hit the SMALL holes quick enough. Coaches have had to adapt to what works especially on offense because the defensive players are just big time monsters today. There’s a reason offensive lineman make so much money today in the NFL because they have to try and block these 300 pound defensive linemen that run a 4.4 lol
BTW I may have exaggerated 4.4 but trust me they are fast!
I don't necessarily agree, Southern. We have plenty of 300+ lb OLmen today. I think it's more due to offensive philosophy, recruiting/drafting and coaching. At both college & NFL level, high scoring games are what the fans want. It's the old adage, "offense sells tickets, defense wins games". That's why everybody is pass happy! It's still possible to knock defensive linemen off the ball, create nice holes and have an effective running game. Too many coaches don't spend the time to work on that in practice. Also, having a legitimate FB doesn't hurt either.
I don’t know bob how often do you see a FB? It’s a different game today and the FB and the earl Campbell kind of RB’s just don’t work or you would see teams using it. We do have 300 lbs offensive linemen but they can’t block the beast on the DL. The DL is just better today than most OL. I’m a penn st fan, Georgia Tech fan and falcons fan and all 3 fan bases complain about the OL lol. Hey I’ve even heard Saban complaining about his OL and we both know he’s got the best players. Harbaugh even give up the power running game because he knows it’s on its last leg it’s just a different game today than it was 10 or 15 years ago.
Now, I can agree with what you're saying! Yes it is a different game today, but it is by choice. It doesn't have to be. Look at it this way. The power running game is on its last leg because coaches are giving up on it. Probably because they don't want to be accused of not adapting with the times. Also, they know recruiting would be a tough sell because a power running game is not sexy.
The average pass play yields more yards than the average running play. Today the run is used to set up the pass; unless Barkley is on the field.

I don't think they even bother to use the run to set up the pass! Today it's pass, pass, pass and if that doesn't work, they blame it on the lack of a running game, lmao.
Lol, that’s a good brother lol. I believe Harbaugh was the last hope of a lower run game, heck even Saban give up on a power run game lol.....Paul Johnson also retired lol
