When Saban was hired by Alabama, he told his athletic director, “You didn’t hire the best coach in the country, you hired the best recruiter in the country.”
And it sure shows.
I doubt Saban said that, he wouldn't admit he wasn't the best coach.
Ain’t no way Saban would say that lol he also wouldn’t say he’s the best. He lets his record speak for him.
I think this will solve the debate.
Good look up Navy... SI took that quote from Monte Burke's biography of Nick Saban: "Saban: The Making of a Coach"
However, here's what Saban had to say about his unauthorized biography: "One of these days when I'm finished coaching at Alabama, I'll write an authorized book because there's only one expert on my life and guess who that is ... me. And there won't be any misinformation. There won't be any false statements. There won't be any hearsay. There won't be any expert analysis from anybody else. It will be the real deal. And I'm not really ready for that to happen and it's a little amazing to me that the timing of all this happening right when we're starting camp. I just want everybody out there and all of our fans to know, it's not going to be a distraction to us and it's never going to get discussed again."
So unfortunately, I don't think it settles the debate. Saban's on record stating that a lot of the book is false/misleading/or lies
LOL... Just like the question of "how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootise roll pop" ...the world may never know!
I doubt Saban said that, he wouldn't admit he wasn't the best coach.
He said it on an interview on ESPN. Some things I just don’t forget.

Yeah, you are probably right. He may say something like that, he's certainly a coach who always thinks he can do better. Always trying to learn new things. I was probably mistaken in that opinion.
I really believe that the reason behind Saban’s successful recruiting at Alabama is their alumni slipping money to their recruits. Almost every year the Crimson Tide have a top 3 recruiting class. Really, every year! Something is up.

Why, because kids want to play for a coach and school that's won 5 NC's in 9 years? Not real hard to find a reason, he's the most decorated coach at the most decorated school.
Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, USC... they all went through stints where their recruiting was 1, 2, or 3 every year for 6 or 7 years. Only difference is they weren't as dominant on the field as Alabama has been.
I don't know why it's hard for you to understand why many 17 yo kids would pick Alabama. They are #1 in National titles, currently #1 in placing kids into the NFL, #1 in first round draft picks... LOL, question is why wouldn't you want to go there.
Hey Roam you know this but it’s also nice when all the high school football coaches tell the kids not to leave the state. Alabama really does have a fence around the state. Probably the only school left that can say that? BTW Saban doesn’t have to cheat to win!

Just my opinion. Regardless, still think something is amok.
Southern, I have no problem acknowledging Saban's success both recruiting and coaching, but I'm curious as to graduation rates for his players, don't know (seriously).
I don’t know but I do know Saban is very strict with his players and he doesn’t put up with any hotdog crap from players. His players are well behaved. Maybe Roam can help with the school work

Usually if they stay they graduate, however Alabama's graduation rate is lower than a lot of teams because they have a lot of people who leave for the NFL. one of the problems with the graduation rate, it doesn't count some kid leaving to get millions of dollars...
Thanks Roam. What you said makes a lot of sense and you really can't blame those that leave early to follow their dream (and the big money!). You would think the NCAA could come up with a formula to take that into account. Then the grad rates might be a better indicator of the quality of the program.

I will say this though... How "hard" it is to graduate from Alabama when you play football is another issue entirely. I received my Masters from Alabama, and by no means was it easy... But I'm not so sure how stringent the oversight is for the football players.
Being a fan of both schools, I often see the interviews with players before and after the games, as well as during the week. Let's just say the players from Penn State are much, MUCH, more well spoken. LMAO
I remember quite a few years ago, Joe Namath was doing color commentary on a college game and the other announcer said something about a player being benched for cutting classes. Namath made a comment something like, You mean they make them go to class. They both laughed, so I don't know if his comment was tongue in cheek or if he was serious!
I can understand the speech of the Alabama players better lol
