Roam, I kind of agree with everything you said about Tommy sticking it out, being a team guy, etc. That is why I really believe he didn't come to the transfer decision on his own. I think he's getting some guidance or direction from daddy. Otherwise, making the decision on his own would be totally out of character based on his track record. You can accuse me of reading to much into this, but I base my opinion not only on his father's statement, but Tommy's silence so far. If daddy shot from the hip about his son leaving the team for greener pastures , an adult 22 yr old would probably issue his own statement to clarify the issue.
That's fair, but there's also something to be said of a kid who doesn't want to bad mouth or contradict his father in public too. Sometimes staying silent in the media, and handling it privately is in his and PSU's interest.
Of course, you could be right also and his dad is calling the shots... but everything I saw from Stevens for 4 years shows me the kid know how to work hard and be patient.
Listen, I know some feel the way they do but...
I find it interesting that a kid can be described as dedicated, a hard worker, and a team guy for 4 years, but then because he decides to transfer all of a sudden he's a me now guy and doesn't want to work hard?
I seriously doubt the kid would have waited 4 years just to get a guaranteed shot at one year of being a starter. If he was really a me now guy, he would have left 3 years ago when he lost the starting job to McSorley. At that point he knew he wasn't going to play for a while. However, he stuck it out, did everything asked of him, worked his butt off by all accounts and was an "ultimate team guy" according to coaches. However, now people want to paint him as selfish and completely forget about the 4 years of hard work and dedication he put in?
You can be the greatest team player....but don't ever give up. Never. Once you do, Team becomes I.
Why does the article on espn say if Stevens wanted to come back he probably wouldn’t be welcomed?
Because they quoted his father saying it in an interview “Honestly, I don’t think that he’ll be welcome back at this point, if he wanted to come back,” Tom Stevens told the Centre Daily Times Thursday. “He’s certainly leaving Penn State.”

A day after that story first developed, Stevens’ father seemingly slammed the door on any such return, telling the Centre Daily Times that his son is “certainly leaving” Penn State and will finish his collegiate playing career at an undetermined elsewhere.
“He came to Penn State to be the starting guy. For it to end up like this, it tore Tommy apart,” Tom Stevens told the Daily Times. “He loves Penn State. … He really went back and forth with this. It’s been really, really, really difficult. But he understands that it’s a business at the end of the day.”
Stevens’ decision to sever ties with the football program comes a few days after head coach James Franklin declined to name a starting quarterback as his team put the finishing touches on practices with this past weekend’s spring game.
“[U]nfortunately, he has to make a selfish decision at this point and do what’s best for him,” the dad added. “What we felt like was best for him was leaving Penn State and exploring other options.”
He stayed last year because it was easy to figure out nobody was going to give a qb with no experience and a foot injury a chance, especially a RS Soph. Roam, if you don't think he's hoping for a school that has a QB issue and will snap at a chance with him I have a bridge for you. I'm willing to bet whoever made the decision screwed up because right now anyone with interest is combing over medical records..
Although I'll probably get bashed and berated for saying this, I agree with you Bill. There is some school out there that is lacking at QB and a coach is that is going to offer him the starting job and welcome him with open arms. It might not be a power 5 school, but some school needs a talented starting QB and he will get his starting job to try and prove himself to get to the next level.
I really hope it works for him and wish him the best!
I heard if Tommy is still hurt he could transfer and sit out a year, but he could not set out at PSU. Does anyone know if this is true and if it is this maybe why he wants out.
It's possible because if Clifford starts this year, even if Stevens received a medical redshirt and could play at Penn State in 2020... I seriously doubt the coaching staff would bench Clifford and play Stevens in that scenario.
So if Sky was right and he is going to try for a medical redshirt, transferring would absolutely be his best option. Preferably to a team with a senior QB who is leaving after 2019.
He could apply for a medical redshirt anywhere including psu.
