Hockey forum yes, tennis forum no. The volleyball forum is probably the next one due to be added.

I don't know Southern, but if it's true, I'm totally blown away.  This kind of discounts Roam's rationale that Notre Lame won't join the Big Ten for football because of long standing bad feelings about anti-catholic bias that happened years ago, or something to that effect (sorry if I misquoted you Roam).  For the life of me, I just can't understand why everyone keeps grovelling to them.  It just pees me off that they keep doing what ever they want for their own benefit and everybody's fine with it.  Well I'm not! 😠 😠 😠 😠

Although the anti-Catholic thing may be true, the major reason why they have not joined the B1G is the alumni don't want it. The last time that ND was offered B1G membership, the faculty were in favor and the alumni were against. The Board of Trustees voted against because they know who they have to please. They also have a sweet TV deal with NBC that pays them a lot of money and ACC gave what they wanted, conference participation in most of their D-1 sports and allowed them to keep their football independence. Here is a paragraph out of Wikipedia explaining the situation:

"Following the addition of Penn State, efforts were made to encourage the University of Notre Dame, at that time the last remaining non-service academy independent, to join the league. In 1999, Notre Dame and the Big Ten entered into private negotiations concerning a possible membership that would include Notre Dame. Although Notre Dame's faculty senate endorsed the idea with a near-unanimous vote, the school's board of trustees decided against joining the conference. (In 1926, Notre Dame had briefly considered official entry into the Big Ten but chose to retain its independent status.) Notre Dame subsequently joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football, in which Notre Dame maintains its independent status as long as it plays at least five games per season against ACC opponents. This was believed to be the major stumbling block to Notre Dame joining the Big Ten, as Notre Dame wanted to retain its independent home game broadcasting contract with NBC Sports, while the Big Ten insisted upon a full membership with no special exemptions."

Well then the ACC and big 10 should leave them out of any kind of conference ties. It’s not right they get to pick and choose what conference they wa t to play in for different sports. Leave ‘em out and they will join a conference or they won’t have anybody to play. Why would anybody be anti catholic? Ain’t catholic the biggest Christian church in the world?  I don’t agree with the Pope on everything but you got to be out of your mind to be anti catholic when most Christians are catholic lol

The USA was very anti-catholic for many, many years. This was a major reason that the Irish were treated so poorly in the 1800s. Many of the colonists had a hatred/bigotry towards Catholics because they felt their loyalty lied with the Pope, not the USA. There was a big fear that they would try to give the Pope control of the government... and they had just fought to get away from the "God appointed" King of England.

The first Catholic President wasn't until 1960, when JFK was elected.

Roam is correct, southern...there was   bitterness, and perceived anti-Catholic bias going back to the early 1900s between the old Western Conference , the predecessor to the Big 10 conference, and ND.Fielding Yost, Michigan's powerful coach at the time, and one who held considerably sway in the western conference actually threatened other conference members with financial  sanctions if they scheduled the 'little Catholic institution", the bitter feud was..long and protracted..While UM helped get ND football on the map by playing them, after the 1909 season they did not play ND until 1942  That short two game series was the last they played until 1978 when the series was finally  resumed...

Only a cynic would suggest that perhaps Yost felt threatened by the football emergence of the Catholic institution..

So, generally speaking , yes the alumni hate UM..They wanted no part of joining the big 10, when Jim Delany tried his best in late 1990s....

I see you haven't given up though on your belief that ND should join a conference   For the umpteenth time, not happening....

There simply is no good reason for ND to join now; Maybe if some things happen, it could signal a change, but for foreseeable future , not happening..

Just a quick question, you said you were Pentecostal... That means you were not baptized as an infant, but made the choice as an adult to be baptized, right?

So, it’s safe to say ND is a money whore, right? They go with whatever situation makes them the most money depending on the sport.

ND is in the ACC for lacrosse also. FYI, Johns Hopkins is part of the B1G for lacrosse. And, if this board has a basketball message board, can we get a lacrosse message board? The lacrosse team is far more successful than the basketball team. They are currently ranked #1 after knocking off #2 Cornell.

So joining the BIg10 FOR HOCKEY is being  a money whore?..Im no hockey buff or any wealth of info on college hockey, but I doubt the ACC even has  a hockey conf, or ND be in it..ND hockey was in Hockey East prior to Big 10 membership, and the CCHA for about 20 yrs up to 2012, where it competed against many of these same schools, hockey being a regional sport, i.e., UM, MSU Ohio St, etc etc..I don think the big 10 started conference play till 2014..

As for being  a money whore or football  independence, c'mon now...all these schools will do what brings in the top dollar..ND is  a national brand, national TV contract, national recruiting, fan base etc, etc  Why in the world would they give that up, it be   equivalent to a  national sales company downgrading and "regionalizing" its product, deciding to ship only to midwest, or the east, etc, etc..Right now, it makes zero sense to join a conference for football, zip, zilch, nada..

Your entire last paragraph is why many think they should be penalized when it comes to playoffs for not being in a conference. If they want to pander for the most money then they shouldn’t get a playoff spot over any team that has played in a conference championship game.

In addition, they don’t want to play in the B1G for football because they would routinely have to play the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn St, and Sparty. As it is now, they get the cream puffs of the ACC like Wake Forest, etc. without having to annually play Clemson or Florida St. Then they can load up their “non conference” ACC schedule with the service academies and the likes of Ball St. On top of that, their schedule this year was putrid as VT and USC stunk. Sorry, I have no warm spot for those arrogant personalities that think ND is the gold standard. The Knute Rockne years are pretty far in the rear view mirror at this point.

You guys, at least most here, still don't get it..The CFP is not about conference titles; its about identifying the 4 best teams in America..

That is so far off base, it be a waste of my time to reply..Suffice to say, the BIG is rife with patsies, terrible conference this yr

AS for last sentence, ND is far from one man..While KNute Rockne may have put the school on the map, Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Lou Holtz, Dan Devine have all won national titles...

The CFP is a popularity contest it has nothing to do with the best 4 teams. The only stats that mean anything in college football is wins and undefeated seasons because these 2 things are done on the field and ain’t got no opinions in it. There’s very few true National champions most are a popularity contest.

Did ND look like one of the 4 best teams last year when they were getting their ears kicked in by Clemson? If they were actually in the ACC, they could have gotten that butt kicking in the ACC Championship game 2 weeks prior and then maybe a more deserving team would have gotten a playoff spot. Plus, ND had the weakest strength of schedule of all the teams in the playoff. That’s a fact, not opinion. It was well covered on college football tv shows with computer calculations on SOS.
