Franklin changed his game plan w/o telling me! LOL
I have voiced my opinion in the past that I am not a Pry fan. Well, that changed Saturday night for me. He had that defense so ready it was ridiculous. Since game 1 until last Saturday night, the defense has gotten better and Pry's halftime adjustments have been SPOT on. That tells me Pry is paying attention, learning from mistakes and is developing into what I am now thinking may be an ALL OUT top DC in the country. He got my vote and I do NOT blame him at all for the 4th quarter let down. It should had never come down to that!!! And I think that will be last of that junk moving forward.
When I made my prediction, I took two things in consideration. For one, the amount of offense Ohio State gave up to both, TCU and Oregon State. I then looked at a home game for PSU, a young QB that hadn't been tested and a PSU Defense that has shown very positive progress since week 1. I was banking on Pry to cut the defense loose and if the got a stop or two right off the bat, the defense would feed of the crowd and keep Ohio State off the field....and boy did they step up!! Right until Franklin decided to play NOT TO LOSE. Say what you want, but that is exactly what he did....again.
If we were behind by 10 points heading into the 4th quarter Saturday night, Penn State wins that game. When Franklin plays to win, they win. He throws TD's against teams in the final minutes of games when leading by a zillion points, but backs off when he is leading a great team by a TD or two....what gives here? What am I missing here?
And then, the number 1 scoring team in the country - playing their biggest game of the year - he decides to introduce a new scheme with a back up QB that hasn't played at all this year and hadn't contributed ONE point to the top team scoring in the country. Was something not working? Wasn't 55 points per game good enough? Why would you change a thing against Ohio State? Try a new scheme against Rutgers or somebody.
So, I am sitting in my seat, the Defense is playing lights out, Ohio State is struggling horribly on offense and Franklin is testing a new offensive scheme with Tommy. Made sense to me....not. That game should had been 28-0 at halftime! Everything I hoped for was happening. If Franklin just played the offensive game he played for 4 weeks before, Ohio State would have never sniffed Penn State in the second half.
I am not even going to address the last play of the game. It should had never come down to that. And think it has been addressed enough by now. What I do hope is, Ohio State bought their punter a steak dinner after the game. Dang, he did his job Saturday night.
Back to Franklin. I am glad he is our coach! I truly believe he is going to win a National Title for us, he has made it fun to go Penn State games on Saturday and I can't think of anyone else I would rather have right now. Rick R? Same thing. I don't think we see another let down the rest of the year. These cats are young coaches, making mistakes, learning every week and they love being at Penn State....who the heck wouldn't with this atmosphere?!! I didn't buy into Franklin's post game speech, he was upset and rambling. Sorry James, the kids make nothing, you make millions and YOU are expected to win easy games and BIG games. BUT I DO BELIEVE you are done losing BIG games and you will start coaching like the Elite coaches.....you were embarrassed and THAT game probably takes you to the next level.
I find it hard to see anybody beating Penn State the rest of the year unless they just have a complete meltdown and I don't think that is going to happen now. I also don't see Ohio State running the table. They played 6 minutes of good ball - that is all they needed - but they played a different PSU team the last 6 minutes. A PSU team trying not to lose instead of trying to win....IMO.
I always look for the positive side of things, something that will make a difference and ways to improve. I am busting on James a little, but I also know unless you are making mistakes, you will NOT get better. The last three years have been filled with heart breakers and a team that has been ranked in the top 10 with two major bowl appearances and BIG10 ring....not too shabby for a OC, DC and HC in their 40's and younger.
GOT TO LOVE PENN STATE FOOTBALL! It AIN'T GOING AWAY ANYTIME SOON!
