The story behind Zack Annexstad is interesting, he was just named Minnesota's starting QB as a walk on freshman. After his sophomore year in HS, he transferred to IMG Academy as a junior. That year he sat behind Kellen Mond, who later went to Texas A&M and started as a true freshman for the Aggies in 2017. Then as a senior, Annexstad sat behind Artur Sitkowski, who was committed to Miami.
However, at some point during the season Sitkowski was benched for Annexstad and he remained the starter for the rest of the year with the offense producing much better with him at the helm. Sitkowski wound up leaving Miami's class and ultimately went to Rutgers. Annexstad turned down offers from Cincinnati and Pittsburgh to walk on at Minnesota. He started as 3rd on the depth chart, but by fall he took the starting spot.
Kid knew what he wanted and went after it. It will be fun to check in on him from time to time and see how he's doing, seems to have a lot of fight in him. Determined young man it seems. Interestingly the recruiting rankings still had him listed behind Sitkowski, even though he was starting ahead of him. LOL
Is he originally from the state of Minnesota? I'm just trying to figure out why a QB recruit turns down full-ride offers from Cincinnati and Pitt to walk on at a school that isn't exactly a juggernaut.
I should have included that... Yes, he played his freshman and sophmore HS years in Mankato, Minnesota. While I don't know if he was a Gopher fan growing up, his family is there and he stated PJ Fleck was a big reason for his walk on commitment
